Yes, and here is a simple way to stimulate a comeback.

Current nationalities getting 30 day stamps by air and 15 days by land, give them 90 days!

Duh.

Because tourists don't have a limitless supply of money or vacation days. Tourists have a fixed amount of money and fixed number of vacation days. Thailand attracts low end tourists because it is cheap, Malaysia being the largest country contributing to Thai tourism. It would make no difference if the visas were longer because the tourists currently don't have more money or days to spend on a longer vacation.

To boost tourism you would have to attract a different segment of the tourist market like gamblers. So open a legal casino in Pattaya and there would be an increase in tourism.

Duh.

You seem to be unaware of the Gap Year tourists, often referred to as backpackers. These people travel for months, have enough money to attend Full Moon parties and drink vast amounts of booze everyday.

If you were to frequent a travel forum you would realise that one of the most frequent questions asked concerns visas. When Thailand reduced land border permits to stay to 15 days they inconvenienced many thousands of tourists that now go instead to more tourist friendly countries in the region.

Backpackers go on in life to become regular tourists, and Thailand is missing out on them because of it's tourist unfriendly policies.

If Malaysia can give me 90 days at the border, why would you object to Thailand doing the same?

I see what you mean. Sorry I don't like backpackers so I won't comment on them but I do understand what you are writing about.

Thailand's short leash visa policy is a sign of xenophobia and bottom line a bad economic policy. Don't restrict ... invite!

Change visa policy OK. How many more tourist dollars would it bring in? A few million.

Legalize gambling in Pattaya and/or Phuket. How many more tourist dollars would it bring in?

A few billion.

The mob is already there anyway. And if a new mob moved in would they be worse? I don't think so. The mob in Vegas always bought me drinks and a free room, sometimes ladies too.

And as a benefit to Thai people the gamblers are quick in and out so they could still be xenophobic. A lot of countries don't let natives gamble so they could stay moral and pure just like they are now and all the problems could be blamed on the immoral, licentious Farang gamblers. Sounds like a win win to me.

I have to agree with that.

The Laotians are getting rich on Thai gamblers across the river from the Golden Triangle, plus they have laydees from all countries ( so I have been informed )!

That's why the GF won't let me go alone. I thought she was concerned about my safety.
