Govt-military divide on flood control denied

The Nation

Defence Minister Yuthasak Sasiprapha on Tuesday dismissed speculation about the government-military divide on flood control.

"I have checked to confirm no military leaders saw Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra as an incompetent," he said.

Yuthasak said every commander told him they were not involved in airing critical remarks against the prime minister.

He said the news reports quoted an unnamed source who claimed to be a high-ranking officer. But all top commanders were unaware how and where such critical remarks were raised, he added.

He said some ill-intentioned people might fabricate the remarks in order to drive a wedge between the government and the military.

He said he could vouch for the military leaders that the armed forces were ready to implement flood control measures as per the government's instruction.

"Soldiers work under the government and are not in the position to criticise their superiors," he said.

The Monday's news reports claimed the military leaders were critical of Yingluck, outlining her 12 flaws in exerting leadership on flood control.

The flaws included a lack of experience in rallying the government agencies to fight flooding and several botched decisions such as entrusting officials with no experience on water management to run the Flood Relief Operations Centre.

Rubbish like this doesnt need reporting at this time based on a single unnamed source. The government-military cooperation has been good. You wont find any Thai person who doesnt think there are a certain small minority people loving the floods and seeing at as a great opportunity to overthrow the government. The military are very unlikely to be in that group as they remember only too well how incompetent the government after their coup were, how slow, corrupt and ineffective the Abhisit government they manouvered into place were and of course they arent stupid enough to want to run a recovery operation after this especially bearing in mind the above or to try any weird stuff when a lot, a real lot of people think the floods are being used to try and change government and the military have through cooperation with government in flood relief recovered at least some if not a lot of their reputation. To now toss it straight away rather than enjoy the ability to get back to barracks leaving the elected government to sort out the mess would be to say the least a silly manouver

The army was very visible around Chatuchak/Lad Phrao at the weekend providing lorries to ferry people along the flooded roads, free of charge as far as I could see. The wagons were not just identifiable by their military green colour, but had big banners on the side with "Royal Thai Army" printed on them. It did look like someone somewhere put some thought into the PR potential of these trucks. In many other countries where the army and the government are as one in the service of the country it would be benign, but here, where there is an element of tension between army and government, it seems that someone has an eye on public opinion.

Why the need to blatantly advertise the fact that an olive-green, military issue heavy duty tonnage vehicle belongs to the armed forces....especially in English??

After the 2010 red shirt sit in, and their "Peaceful protesters, not Terrorists" sign in English, the army thought it was the new way to do it.

It was also to make it obvious to everyone that they weren't Thaksin supplied army trucks.

If you want sources, don’t look any further than TV. Many membersincluding me sees the government very incompetent, after hearing what they tellus which is always rosy and wrong, and PM just says, I am sorry when thing goesbad

These are some of their action pointing toward theirincompetence

Military help for the people has been despite the government, NOT in cooperation with the billionaire fugitive and his puppet sister.

The military's reputation doesn't need any "recovery".

This spin doctoring is nowhere near at the same level as the most of the PM's strategic communications so you have only had the opposite effect.

Yes, the MPs of all parties should be getting their trucks on the streets and doing the same.

By the way, What colour are their trucks?

<snip>

Thank you to all the military officers trying so hard to keep their focus on helping and wasting as little time and energy on cursing the billionaire and his sister who are doing this to us.

Yes, dämn that Yingluk - she's doing it to you and made all that rain come. Just as well the Dems lost the election, eh? Who would you blame then?

I agree it's rubbish,

but I doubt there was not three sources available...

all of whom wish to remain anonymous at present or forever

Of course the Defense minister, her appointee,

isn't get more than lip service from the top generals.

To act on a direct order sure, to fill his ears with

face saving platitudes and jive, even more sure.

2 shifts of general later and it's a new ball game.

I cannot believe that Sir David Attenborough, the naturalist, who is totally apolitical would make this remark. Perhaps you have a pub mate with the same name that you are quoting ?

There are Ministery of Interior, Royal Irrigation, Highway Department, Public Health and other government department personnel deployed. They are not all in marked vehicles or wearing uniforms or prominently posting signs, but they are deployed at 100% The military is the largest group of uniform personnel in Thailand. By its sheer size in numbers, their presence gives the impression that the military is over contributing. That is not the case.

I don't doubt for a minute that some of the usual cadre of middling officers stuck below the grade of general might be grumbling. They always do. The senior officer group isn't complaining as they are smart enough to see this as an opportunity to rehabilitate their public image. What goes unmentioned is that the military brass has been rather supportive in public of the PM and have not embarrassed her publicly or made any worrisome statements. It is not in their long term interest and more specifically, imho believe that the flooding is beyond any one person's control. I think this article is another example of a media group trying to stir up sh*t.
