Govt to Brief World on Flood Recovery Plan

Deputy Prime Minister Kittirat Na Ranong has prepared to explain Thailand's flood reconstruction plan to the international community at the upcoming ASEAN Economic Ministers meeting.

Trade Negotiations Department Director General Srirat Rastapana has announced that in the upcoming ASEAN Economic Ministers meeting from November 15 to 19 in Bali, Indonesia, Deputy Prime Minister Kittirat Na Ranong, also the commerce minister, will explain Thailand's flood reconstruction plan in order to regain confidence of the international community.

At the recent Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in Hawaii, Kittirat informed Thailand's trade partners of the Thai government's 10-year flood prevention plan to be carried out in a cooperation with Japan International Cooperation Agency.

Initially, the government will invest in the construction of major flood ways, tollways and railways which will also be used for transportation.

Moreover, the government will design new cities under water management principles in order to prevent future floods and drought.

Kittirat affirmed that all of the projects will be contracted to the private sector via a transparent bidding process.

Meanwhile, Export Promotion Department Director General Nantawan Sakultanak has called a meeting with related agencies and the private sector represented by the Thai Chamber of Commerce, the Federation of Thai Industries and provincial business organizations to discuss the flood rehabilitation plan on November 18.

The issue of export promotion will also be on the meeting's agenda.

...and the world is listening!

I don't believe what I'm seeing here.

Does the government have a plan that has involved experts, local governors etc?

There isn't such a word as "planning" in this government's vocabulary. It is called wait and then react.

Initially, the government will invest in the construction of major flood ways, tollways and railways which will also be used for transportation.

As opposed to being used for what? Frying noodles?

Kittirat affirmed that all of the projects will be contracted to the private sector via a transparent bidding process.

Where are the cities gonna be? Protection is needed for those existin, but then, some ppl may have vacant land, that needs developing. Bit like tax relief on buying, ONLY, new properties.

And to tell the World that bidding will be transparent. Isn't it always?

Never read worse in all my time here.

Now my confidence in the government's ability to manage the recovery has been restored, I can get back to surveying the floods from the back of 'Bo-bo', my flying pig.

New cities what are they going to do with the old ones?

The delegates from other nations at these meeting must be highly trained in keeping a straight face when the Thai delegate comes out with this stuff.

New cities what are they going to do with the old ones?

Same thing they are going to do with old Thailand after they finish building new Thailand. :D

We don't know what the government's plan is, as "a study was still needed"....

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said yesterday the funding estimate of between Bt600 billion and Bt800 billion put forward by Energy Minister Pichai Naripthaphan was only a preliminary figure. A study was still needed to determine the project's details and required budget, she said.

However,

Deputy Prime Minister Kittirat Na Ranong has prepared to explain Thailand's flood reconstruction plan to the international community at the upcoming ASEAN Economic Ministers meeting.

perhaps now, it has been studied in the intervening 14 days between announcing the unstudied The New Thailand Project and Kittirat's explaining the plan and costs to foreign dignitaries.

.

The new cities will be developed on the new land...

Pheu Thai Bangkok land reclamation project hits snags; ecosystem damage feared

Villagers in Samut Sakhon coastal province have threatened to hold a mass demonstration if the Pheu Thai-led government goes ahead with a controversial land reclamation proposal in the Gulf of Thailand. The 300,000-rai land reclamation project would create a new city from mangroves and land mass from the sea around three provinces: Bangkok, Samut Prakan and Samut Sakhon.

A week after the election, Pheu Thai's de facto leader Thaksin Shinawatra insisted the party would execute its election pledges, including the land reclamation project. "We will build a dam 10 kilometres out [from the shoreline]," said Thaksin. "Behind the dam, land will be reclaimed to create new land. This will form the base of a new city. If we reclaim 300,000 rai, 200,000 will be for public use and the remainder sold."

Along the same lines, 20 Pheu Thai Party MP's today signed a motion to debate a proposal for relocating the capital away from Bangkok because of its flooding.

They are revitalizing a previous Thaksin administration proposal for moving the capital to Nakhon Nayok.

.

Based on the events of today, it is pretty obvious the government's plan consists of three points:

1) Bring Thaksin back

2) Bring Thaksin back

3) Bring Thaksin back
