FROC admits drying city's west a tough task

A Flood Relief Operations Centre (FROC) executive yesterday admitted that it would be difficult to drain flood water from bowlshaped, lowlying western Bangkok into the Tha Chin River, but the centre would try to achieve this by December 15.

Weera Wongsaengnak, head of the FROC’s waterdrainage panel, said Bangkok's flood crisis was nearly over, as there were fewer and fewer flooded areas, while water in the northern and eastern parts of the capital was limited to floodretention fields. These areas don't naturally drain into canals, however, so officials would have to pump them dry, Weera said.

The Rangsit, Siwalee and other housing estates downstream of the Rangsitprayoonsak Canal remained flooded, with some areas under water as high as 60cm, so officials planned to use pumps to drain them. Parts of VibhavadiRangsit Road were still flooded, but officials hoped to have them dry in seven to 10 days.

Weera admitted that the situation in western Bangkok remained worrying; the bowlshaped area would take longer than eastern Bangkok to dry, while canals linking the area with the Tha Chin River still had high water levels. He said officials would try to dry the area by December 15, or by year's end at the latest, while the FROC would continue to hold weekly meetings to assess the water situation in affected provinces.

Weera said a meeting of the FROC and seven provincial governors scheduled for tomorrowDecember 7 would review each province's floodtackling measures and required assistance from the government.

As the country celebrated the King's birthday yesterday, CNN International anchor and correspondent Anna Coren reported on the King's suggestions about water management, flood drainage and prevention made a decade ago - and also that the authorities didn't implement the suggestions until the recent flood disaster occurred. Former prime minister Anand Panyarachun also gave an interview about times in the past when the King regularly visited all parts of Thailand to help the Thai people, and that this is the reason he is so beloved.

Thank you for making the first apolitical and straightforwards post on TV for weeks.

Refreshing and thank you.

Take care.

Nothing to do with the FROC, it's our PM who just said that she emphasized that cabinet ministers, particularly Deputy Prime Minister/Interior Minister Yongyuth Wichaidit, should quickly resolve the flood in many areas as there are 80-100 housing estates reportedly under water and they should be drained by the year end. Makes you wonder if there are still people left to do the work :ermm:

I'm sorry, I'm a bit tired having just driven back from Suphan.

Is there something wrong in your mind, with the concept of a Prime Minister delegating to other cabinet ministers ???

Are we missing something here ?

What point are you trying to make ???

Please spell it out.

I think the point is whoever is helping pump water out of flood affected areas is helping and whoever is arguing amongst each other is not. Together we can build a better tomorrow. Its the Thai people and there nation we love and cherish lets come together and help them in this time of crisis not argue whos right or wrong

I am confident that the politicians will do their bit, generating ample-supplies of 'hot air', to help dry things out. :whistling:

And that the ending of the monsoon-season up-North, some 5-6 weeks ago, is an irrelevant detail in the long-awaited & much-promised end of the floods. <_<

Good Luck to the sufferers, in rebuilding your homes & jobs & lives, hope that the government-compensation money is distributed rapidly & fairly, without any 'deductions' by local officials.
