Police pursuing all leads on two Rajdamnoen bombs

Police are making progress with the checking of all leads related to two homemade bombs found and defused on Rajdamoen Avenue, National Security Council secretary general Wichean Potephosree said on Wednesday.

"The Cabinet has tasked police to solving the case," he said.

Wichean said the case received a high priority because the bombs were planted to coincide with the celebrations for His Majesty's birthday. Rajdamnoen is a major venue for festive activities.

Wichean refused to speculate on the culprits behind the bombs, saying he was only authorised to say that the police investigation was ongoing.

Police said forensic checks revealed that the two bombs were timed to go off on Tuesday around 4.45 pm, coinciding with the rush hour.

A motorcycle taxi driver saw a suitcase left unattended at a parking lot of Rajdamnoen shopping plaza and alerted police around 10.00 am.

Explosive Device Found on Ratchadamnoen Klang Road

An explosive device was found on a traffic island at Ratchadamnoen Road.

The device was set to detonate at 5:30 PM yesterday, but was diffused with a water cannon by the bomb squad.

Yesterday, a suspected explosive device was found in a black bag placed inside the pot of a tree on a traffic island at Ratchadamnoen Klang Road in front of the Government Lottery Office.

The device was diffused by a National Police Office's bomb squad using a water cannon.

The device is thought to have been wired to explosive material, with metal and glass fragments filled inside a 3 inch wide and 7 inch tall section of metal pipe. The bomb was set to explode yesterday at 5:30 PM.

According to a security guard at the Government Lottery Office, the suspected bomb was found at around 9 AM.

The local police were informed after it was discovered that the device had electrical wires. The bomb squad was immediately dispatched to the scene.

After the incident, Commander of the Metropolitan Police Division 1, Police Major General Wichai Sangprapai called a meeting with the investigation and bomb units.

The investigation team has also been ordered to gather intelligence from the field.

Police hunt for suspect of bomb scare near Lottery office

The Nation

Police are seeking a suspect believed involved in Tuesday's bomb-scare near the Government Lottery Office on Ratchadamnoen Avenue.

Deputy National Police Chief Phanupong Singhara Na Ayutthaya called a meeting of investigators late Tuesday focusing on the investigation.

Pol Gen Phanupong said the homemade bomb was in an open black bag placed on a traffic island. The explosive device was an iron pipe 12cm in diametre by 18cm long, wrapped in tape, with a digital clock, electrical circuit, batteries and small pieces of metal and broken glass. The clock was set at the number 1 which could be 1am or 1pm.

After the bomb squad defused the explosive at 3.30pm using a high-pressure watergun, they found that its circuit was incomplete. Police believe that the device was aimed to cause disturbance or threaten the public.

If the bomb was functional, police said, its blast radius could be10 metres.

A guard at a nearby parking lot said he began work at 6am and noticed the open-bag at around 9am but was unaware there was a bomb until a motorcyclist looked inside and informed the police.

Gen Phanupong said that Deputy Prime Minister Pol Capt Chalerm Yubumrung and National Police Chief Pol Gen Prewpan Dhamapong consider the incident as a serious case.

He said the police will reinspect the scene, check the CCTV footage and question witnesses to seek clues lead to find a suspect.

Well done the police bomb-squad, for defusing the devices, and members of the public, for spotting & reporting them. I'm sure we all hope that this isn't a return, to the days of bombs & grenade-attacks, and is just a one-off. :ermm:

Do not look further than the HQ of the democrat party or the army. They have everything to win when bombs go off. they will be able to circumvent the electoral will of the people. Without the army's help the democrats never win an election.

Sounds so much better than just "looking" at the analog or digital timer.

Daily murders, bomb and grenade attacks continue in the South however.

Nowadays bombing goes mostly together with muslim terror.Who is responsible for trying to bomb a most revered Thai monarch? Hopefully there will be sought deeply.

I would have thought it was to commemorate the return of Red Shirt Leader Arisaman to Thailand. A couple of bombs for old times sake. Isn't today one of the endless anniversary dates for one or the other of their rampages?

*Disclaimer: To be taken as seriously as the the quoted nonsense*

Are you seriously suggesting that the Dems or the Army are responsible for the planting of these bombs?

Do you have ANY shred of evidence for such a serious accusation?

Do you ANY connection with reality?

IMO it's very early to be jumping to this, or indeed any other, conclusion. There were bombing & grenade-campaigns last year, when the Democrat Party was leading the coalition-government, which to me suggests that it's not quite as simple as you claim.

Indeed one bomber, who blew himself (and others in his building) up last year, was a committed Red-Shirt.

And as jeanelie and Oberkommando point out, this may have a Muslim/Southern connection, who knows ?

It's too early, and I would suggest unhelpful, to start with the fanciful speculation just yet, let's wait to see if any evidence emerges, or if more still-undetected bombs are out there waiting to go off. And hope that there aren't ! :(

Explosive device defused in Bangkok: police

BANGKOK, December 7, 2011 (AFP) - Thai authorities said Wednesday that a makeshift explosive device had been found and defused in Bangkok, but played down the potential threat to the public.

Metropolitan police chief Lieutenant General Vinai Thongsong told reporters that the device, which was found on Tuesday in a bag near the government lottery office, did not appear to have been fully assembled.

"If it was completed, the blast radius could have been 10 metres (33 feet). Initially, we believe the people who made it wanted to create trouble, to not kill," he said. "Police are now investigating, checking CCTV."

Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubumrung said the incident appeared to be politically related and the perpetrators wanted to "challenge the government."

The device was found in an area close to where celebrations had been held on Monday to mark the 84th birthday of Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Thailand remains deeply divided more than a year after its worst civil violence in decades, which left about 90 people dead in street clashes between opposition protesters and the military in Bangkok in April and May 2010.

In the months following the end of the "Red Shirt" rallies, there was a series of largely unexplained minor bomb blasts in the capital, but the situation in the city has been generally calm this year.

Thailand now has a new government led by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, the sister of controversial ex-leader Thaksin Shinawatra, the Red Shirts' hero.

Speaking of bombs in Bangkok, did they ever figure out who set off the New Years Eve bomb a few years back?

The new years bomb?I tought we were talking about 15+ bombs from which 9 exploded and killed 3 people. And no they didn't find them as Chalerm wasn't in charge at that time.

bit off, but also regarding to an unattended bag. We were sitting at Suwarnabhumi when we had got a sight of an unattended luggage. We reported it to the security straight away, they had a quick look at it, then walked away. I asked my wife why wouldnt they check it or secure it? She had no idea, we had been waiting for another 10-15 mins if someone turns up, nothing happened and made our way. It could be anything left like that. In my judgement this was a gross negligence on behalf of the security.

What do you guys think about this?

He is in the same league as the one who wanted to blow up Thaksin a few years ago.
