Cabinet announces New Year holiday Dec 31-Jan 3

BANGKOK, Dec 13 – Thailand’s Cabinet on Tuesday announced this season’s official New Year holiday from Dec 31 through Jan 3, while extending the emergency decree another three months in three southernmost border provinces.

Government Spokeswoman Thitima Chaisang said the cabinet's resolution to extend the holiday from Dec 31-Jan 2, as approved by the previous administration, was offered as New Year gift to those affected by the flood crisis and to boost tourism and domestic economy.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra at the weekly meeting asked the Interior Minister to coordinate with the Public Relations Department to promote the use of OTOP products, for flood-affected 1,868 communities in 68 provinces, therefore creating a business improvement of over Bt260 million.

Ms Thitima said mobile cabinet meetings were agreed to be held upcountry once a month in order to receive opinions of local residents.

The decision set next year's first mobile cabinet meeting for Jan 16 in the northern province of Chiang Mai. The premier must be there Jan 15 to speak before Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn at the opening ceremony of the International Horticultural Exposition Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2011, opening Wednesday and running through March 14, 2012.

In a related matter, Deputy Government Spokesman Anusorn Iamsa-ard said that the Cabinet extended the emergency decree in Thailand's southern border provinces from Dec 20 through March 19 was due to a survey saying residents were satisfied with the decree enforcement.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung ordered police to be on high alert during the upcoming New Year celebration, following a recent bomb attempt near Government Lottery Office.

He asked the public not to be alarmed, adding that officials are ready to respond should there be any bombing incident.

Mr Chalerm said the bomb attempt near Government Lottery Office last week was politically motivated. He said the situation was different from the 2006-2007 Bangkok New Year's Eve bombings, which he claimed had been carried out by the now-disbanded Council of National Security (CNS) which wanted to create situations due to internal conflicts. What a ruddy blind surprise, not, considering the Shinawatra's are the major shareholders of OTOP : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Tambon_One_Product

The PM is now asking for family self-promotion, to provide for flood victims? Come on? This is more than a piss-take.

This is vomit material. It stinks, and it should be highlighted more strongly. She hasn't even got her wellies wet yet, and yet she's inviting black shiite all over her brother's whiter than white socks.

Well high time this kind of rigmarole was highlighted to the rest of the world, by The Nation, no less.

Do you have the balls to do it, Mr Editor?

Less public holidays, a few more employee-selected holidays, would make things better.

The last thing, for productivity, we need is more public holidays...

There are too many public holidays in Thailand. It brings down productivity and jacks up cost for business owners.

Absolutely!!! Add all those public holidays to the absurdly generous 10 days' annual leave!! They're hardly ever at work!!

300 baht per day??? Yet another hole in the dyke! Better relocate to Cambodia.

Which New Year? They have three holidays for New Year's; ours, theirs and Chinese.

Pick one <deleted>.

Can you not read??? Or is it the comprehension that challenges you???

I don't think "OTOP" has shareholders. It's basically made up of community organisations.

There are 36,000 OTOP groups across the country, with each having between 30 to 3,000 people per group.

I by that deduct that you don't manage any staff here in any company that follows Thai public holidays and normally respected holidays. It is normally 14-15 days per year, not counting in 'special holidays' that gets called by the government very late into planning each year as of late - totaling up several more days. And then add the normal count of 10-15 days of normal vacation days on top of that.

Note: If you work in a bank or for those working in the government offices there is even more additional holidays.
