'Jingle all the way' for Yingluck?

The Nation

After a fortnight of high-profile activities in which Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has inspected guards of honour with the leaders of Thailand's Armed Forces, visited Burmese strongmen, chatted with Aung San Suu Kyi and received the Chinese vice president, her trip to the provinces tomorrow has escaped media attention. Who cares if she is to preside over a temple ceremony to forge a golden bell in Si Sa Ket?

Sources, however, said the Si Sa Ket trip might not be as simple as it sounds.

First off, it is to take place at Wat Sribungburana, a temple she had a fond memory of when it came to her dream-like election campaign. Then, there are rituals planned that will require her total focus, not least because they involve some Pali words that she must memorise and utter.

An itinerary of the event, obtained by The Nation, shows Yingluck will have to do a few more unusual things besides reciting the Pali phrases. These include touching a temple threshold while uttering an excuse for being a woman, in order to enter a holy place and lead a sacred ceremony.

The highlight will be her presiding over the bell-moulding ceremony during which she must make a wish that goes something like, "When the bell chimes, let there be everlasting peace from the world of naga, to the world of humans and to the heaven."

The sources said they were not certain whether the golden bell-moulding ceremony had something to do with a wish Yingluck made at the temple before the July 3 election. They were not even sure she had made any wish at all, but all remembered that she had some good memories of the Northeastern province during her campaign trail.

After the ceremony, Yingluck is scheduled to visit government and community offices in Si Sa Ket and report on the progress of the distribution of a number of funds allocated to the province.

This area of Thailand is well-acknowledged as the country's hub of magic. Buddhism there has absorbed many traditional practices that are widely believed to have tremendous power.

Thais that are educated and aware of mainstream Western opinion on such matters have learned to hide their beliefs in this sort of thing, but don't fool yourself, even those at the top they believe and practice them to varying degrees.

Of course, as in all such traditional value systems there are consequences from wielding them in the wrong way, not all aspects of these are what Christianity would interpret as being of "the dark side".

I'm sure many of you with significant others from these areas (Surin/Sisaket/Buriram) of ethnic Khmer background know what I'm talking about, and realize that many even educated central Thais may believe s/he used such tools to snag you!

Remember that big kerfuffle about the "lone madman" who wrecked the Erawan shrine, and the speculations in the press that Thaksin was was behind it, trying to insert his own totem in its replacement?

Maybe that's the real reason behind the coup. . .

The only thing jingling around Yingunluck is the Gold around her neck and the money she is lining her pockets with.

If she speaks Pali as well as she speaks English then I can only wish for a miracle for her. She'll need one! :)

yes, because of her well handling of the flood problem along with her fellow members, she deserves the same fate as her brotherjap.gif

The flooding has subsided, Bangkok is flood free as proclaimed by the Democrat aligned governor. All in all, she survived a tough disaster and is slowly but surely regaining her popularity, as she directs the recovery from Thailand's worst flooding of the century.

I think it is grand that the PM can find time to go and visit a marginalized region and partake of the local customs. Her love and understanding of the nation is uplifting. She travels tiresly throughout the nation lifting spirits and sharing her warmth, charm and boundless love. How fitting that at this time of goodwill to fellow man and good cheer, that the nation's beloved and admired PM is doing just that. I'm sure you will join me as I extend my thanks to the nation's wonderful PM. wai.gif

Well they certainly believe at all levels. Wasn't that long ago that Thaksin came to Chiang Mai with the stated intention of visiting 99 Wat's in three days.

Didn't help he was still found guilty lost half his money and had to flee the country t avoid jail.

Come to think of it maybe there is some thing to it using it in the wrong way has consequences.

You think?, The Dems are out, and PT are back in government, maybe it rises above the individual, something many here on Tvisa have yet to achieve

At this season of joy and happiness called Christmas, hijacked here as a commercial opportunity, as in the west, as well, let us all pause to give our deepest thanks and sincerest congratulations to the Lovely Lady Yingluck, who selflessly, has sacrificed family togetherness in order to answer a higher calling to lead Thailand into a brighter future.

While other mortals of her elite group pursue wealth and power, she has dedicated herself to ensuring Thailand’s place in the family of South East Asian nations while denying a higher agenda. Traveling to all parts of the country to listen to the problems of her citizens in order to ease their burdens, she shines as a light in the darkness. May she be blessed with all that she deserves.saai.gifcoffee1.gif

Worst flooding of the century won't be long before the Thaksin fans have it the worst flooding in history.

The important point is that Yingluk is the democratically elected Prime Minister of Thailand, put there by the votes of the people.

Not like her imposter predecesor, who was installed by the junta.

Of course she goes about her associated duties, like the voters want her to do.
