Thai Maps Garmin Nuvi 40

Featured Replies

I returned the Navman (mentioned in a previous thread) and purchased a new Garmin Nuvi 40 whilst on a recent trip to Australia.

Unsure if there is a similar Garmin in Thailand, possibly sold under a different model number?

Here is the Nuvi 40

https://buy.garmin.c...D=401&pID=92773

Now trying to find out the best way to locate Thailand map for it, whether CD or preferably Micro SD card map.

Any advice appreciated

Thank you.

The best map would be the Thailand Street Map, version 12.0 available from Garmin dealers in Thailand. It usually is supplied on a CD with instructions for loading the map file to GPS internal memory. The map can be transferred to a microSD memory card. You should be aware that Thai junction view usually does not work with foreign origin Nuvi GPS units such as your Nuvi 40.

If you are still in Australia, Garmin sells their Southeast Asia map, including Thailand, on microSD memory card. This is not the same map as available from ESRI (GPSsociety) Thailand.

IO, thank you for your reply, will follow up on your advice.

Caution: When you follow the directions on the CD your existing Australian map will be deleted. If this is not what you want then use a microSD card or have ESRI in Bangkok install the map to GPS internal memory.

I've just bought a v11.1 map for my Garmin nuvi 1490 from http://www.eaglegps.co.th/ while I was in Chiang Mai last week. It cost just 1000 baht and they put it on a micro SD card for me. I think they said the v12 was 2500 baht, but they would have to order it (with my Garmin ID number) and it would take about a week and I was only in Chiang Mai for a couple of days, so, as they said there was very little difference between the v11.1 and v12 versions, I decided to take the older version. My European maps are still installed as well.

Great, thanks all for your input.

FWIW, I added TSM 12.01 (dual) to my microSD card in a Garmin nuvi 1300 from the U.S. I had to de-select the U.S. maps to get a satellite lock here in Thailand. Then everything worked fine. took me awhile to figure that out. huh.png

Agreed, you can only view one map at a time, deselect all other maps. I don't see what that has to do with satellite lock though. Are you able to switch between the TSM v12.01 [dual] Thai and English language maps with the US purchased nuvi 1300?

Until I de-selected the U.S. map I could not get a satellite lock. As soon as I de-selected the U.S. map I got a satellite lock.

I cannot figure out how to switch from English to Thai.

With the Thai OS nuvis purchased in Thailandl you change text language to Thai, touch Tools > Settings > Language > Text Language > Thai.

My U.S. Garmin nuvi 1300 is a veritable "Tower of Babel" with 35 language options including Arabic, Korean, Japanese, Chinese (2x), but no Thai. I guess I need to flash 'Singapore firmware' or maybe the Thai firmware. But then I wonder if I will lose English? I haven't taken the time (yet) to get into the system.

Reference your microSD card. What folder name, 'Garmin' or 'Map', did use on the microSD card AND what map file name, 'gmapprom.img' or 'gmapsupp.img', did you use inside the folder?

SDCARD: Map\gmapsupp.img

I don't know what to say. I can't find any reference to satellite lock being dependent on the map selected. Just what are you calling satellite lock? The GPS certainly will not work off a U.S. road map in Thailand. Garmin nuvis are not intended to display multiple maps at the same time, so don't expect to be able to select more than one map at a time.

Thanks, that's more or less what I was trying to say with my initial post here on this thread.

I think I have the U.S. map on the root, and added the TSM map to the SD card. Initially I was unable to to get a satellite lock, multiple messages like "trouble satellites found, continue searching". When I went into "tools, settings, map, info" both TSM and CN North America were checked. When I unchecked CN North America NT 2012.10 [1] Lower 49 States, and left Thailand StreetMap V12.01 NT [Dual] checked my unit locked on satellites (5 bars) and displayed my location, and has been working as expected.

I save the maps on my hard drive and change as necessary - some maps can be d/l from torrent sites so you can try before you buy - if you know what you are doing. The latest Garmin seems to come with English and Thai but previously one had to download ENG or Thai.

iGenie one has to hard reset the unit and choose English to type English destinations etc.

www.gadgetrend.com in Bangkok is one I use or go direct to ESRI in the Standard Charter building Sathorn.

After reading about a hundred post. It looks to me as a person that wants to to buy a GPS unit for my car. It is clear that no one agrees as to what the best unit is. It looks like the only way i can get a unit that works without problems. Is to spend 500 buck on an iphone. <deleted>?? Is it just me or has GPS been around for WHAT? 15 years. How is it that we, the buying public can not buy a flawless mapping system. Mybe i need a contact in the CIA or NSA to get the latest unit. After all the powers to be can read my news paper from space, but we can not get a GPS that works. Is that fuc_k up or what?

THB3,990 will buy you a Garmin 40, in Thailand, complete and ready to go with a ESRI v12.1 street map.

It's really a simple thing. You should learn from reading the many posts that Garmin is the most popular GPS unit mainly because it can use the best map. The ESRI TSM map is the best available for here in Thailand. I'm not a Garmin fan boy but I do have four of them.

The Nuvi 40 available with the best latest Thailand map for 3,990 baht will be difficult to beat price wise,

Some guys are satisfied using their smart phones especially if they already have one. In my opinion smart phone cameras are now really great but the GPS use still leaves a lot to be desired especially since a Nuvl device is no longer that expensive.

I hope someone can help with this because I'm getting conflicting answers from the local shop. I ordered a Garmin Nuvio 40. Before I left the shop, I opened it up and wanted them to show me directions from Rayong to Bangkok in English.

Staff comments-No problem. Then, this version doesn't support English. Next, it supports Eng but the maps only in Thai script. Finally, can you come back tomorrow.

After I told them I didn't want it, they asked if I could return tomorrow since they can't get support today to answer my questions.

So, does the map show in English not Thai script. Should I receive a cd with this? Should I pay more than 3,990 baht to get an English version?

Thanks in advance

I have a Nuvi 40. The list price is 3990B. It works well. It works in both Thai and English. Your shop staff dont know what they are doing.

You dont get a CD with anything useful on, but if you go here: http://www.gpssociety.com/Main/_En/Member_login.aspx you can register your unit and download the most recent versions (for a year) of the UK and Thai maps along with badly written instructions as to how to install them. I recommend that you download all of them and store them locally before the year expires. These maps include Malaysia and Singapore.

When I bought my unit the shop installed the English language version of the map for me, though I dont know what the difference between the two map languages really is as the English version also supports Thai script. Since then I have updated it myself to the latest version.

The Thailand purchased Garmin nuvi 40 includes a CD complete with a Thai lauguage map, a US language map, and instructions. The cost is 3,990 THB, complete. The Thai map, with Thai script, is normally supplied to retail dealers. The US map, with US script, can be downloaded from the supplied CD. You need a computer and miniUSB cable to download from the CD, if you don't have a computer then purchase from a suitable US map dealer/distributer.

My CD didn't have maps on, just instructions. The shop downloaded the first English map from the website and subsequently I got my map updates from the same website as I described.

It is possible that you received an original Singapore Garmin nuvi 40. Those included a Singapore and Malaysia (Sin/Mal) language map. They do not include the Thai language or US language maps that are included with the CD for downloading and sold in Thailand.

I dont think so as the unit I bought had the Thai map installed by default and the instruction book was in Thai.

It's been a while since I did this but there may be three or four separate issues:

Maps: TSM dual

Device UI: having English and Thai switchable menus

Keyboard: adding Thai keypad

Spoken assist: adding Thai voice

Local POIs

It is relatively easy to mod a nuvi.

This is why I replied to you on another topic as I was told in two different locations that the 40 was only English or Thai and not switchable in use. You appear to have solved this so congrats thumbsup.gif . I ended up buying the next model up - but it has got a bigger screen.....

The Garmin nuvi 40 sold in Thailand includes both the Thai and US language mapsets. Also included is the Thai OS, local POIs, spoken Thai or English voice, Thai keyboard, and many other switchable menu options. If you have to switch or change your original menus (reprogram memory) then you don't have an original Thailand purchased GPS.

Insert a 1GB microSD memory card into the side of your Garmin and go to the internet and download the Garmin English language map, City Navigator Thailand NT 2013.20 (unlocked). There are many sites, incluiding You Tube, be sure to include a new folder named Garmin on the microSD card..
