COMMERCE MINISTRY EXPECTS TO INCREASE CAR PRODUCTION BY TWO MILLION CARS WITHIN FIVE YEARS

The Ministry of Commerce sets its target to produce two million automobiles within five years.

Following the opening ceremony of the 22nd International Bangkok Motor Show at Impact Arena Muang Thong Thani, Deputy Minister of Commerce Minister PREECHA LAOHAPONGCHANA (ปรีชา เลาหพงศ์ชนะ) said Thailand is capable to produce one million cars, in which 550,000 of them are being used in Thailand while 450,000 remaining vehicles are exported to foreign countries. Moreover, he said Thailand plans to increase the number of cars produced in the country to two million by 2010, and half of the cars produced will be exported to other countries. The increasing number of automobiles will help reduce car imports in Thailand as well as decrease foreign currencies.

The Deputy Minister of Commerce also stated that the government will help support car manufacturers in the country by organizing seminars, to offer vehicle-related knowledge to students in educational institutes.

They are just trying to fool us and themselves. It's not 2 mil cars, it's 2 mil pickups, 70% mostly for export. Domestic CAR market is shrinking and some sections have been nearly wiped out due to aggressive taxes.

I read in Motoring that world's total pickup market (small ones, not the US size) might only be 1.5 mil a year - less than Thailand is going to produce.

The principal cause of traffic jams is the lack of roads - they don't build them enough, or fast enough. They waste money on substandard roads that need yet more money on repair, and at all stages there are leeches scheming to get their 20% cut on all contracts.

Auto industry accounts for 20% of total government's revenue.
