Stagnation In General

I have been noticing lately that there seems to be a change in policy regarding what exactly should remain in General Topics and what should be moved.

As an example there are multiple topics which have remained in general for the last few days that would normally been moved rapidly into sub forums. These topics are: Raising Thai Stepchildren, Its Scary Bringing Up A Family In Thailand, Investing The Money and Purchasing An Investment Condo In Bangkok all of which are clearly relevant to either the family and children or the Business and investment forums.

I suspect this is because there is a recent dearth of new topics beyond the obvious "sin sot", "scamming ho", and "they are all stupid" fare, though, the truth be told, even these seem thinner on the ground.

Is it just me or is the general forum stagnating? It seems that once upon a time the General Forum turned over far more frequently. In any given 24 hour period, the forum would be refreshed overnight depending on the time zone a poster is in -- for those of us based in Thailand, there would be new posts from the US and Europe, for those outside the country, their would be a new crop of posts from Thai-based posters.

Not that i mind seeing these posts remain in General, but it seems not so long ago the forum did not require padding out.

Another observation is that while TV has always been cliquey, the cliques themselves seem to have dwindled to the point where i can count on my fingers the posters who will reply to any given topic. It seems TV has lost a significant amount of its diversity. Especially in this particular sub forum

I think the problem is that most Thai and Thailand related topics have been done to death on Thai visa over the years.

Besides the updating of current Thailand news and events and of certain information that affects us all, such as visa regulations for example, than it is becoming increasingly difficult to churn up anything original or inspiring for the readers.

Also keeping in mind that Thai visa and Thai law does limit us to a certain extent as to the themes of our threads and posts.

Personally i still enjoy Thai visa and of course there are other forums on the internet to suit every taste, similar to watching television, if you don`t like one channel, there is always the option of tuning in to another.

I think in most cases a topic is better to start off in General where it will get a wider readership than in one of the sub-forums that don't get much activity or are a 'specialist' group that general readership won't bother with.

nocturn. Why don't you contribute with a new topic instead of complaining?

Not a complaint. Being observant and contructive.

Well, using words like "stagnating", "moving topics to their right forum", " It seems TV has lost a significant amount of its diversity. Especially in this particular sub forum" . If this is not a complaint, then what is? smile.png

Not just 'general', there seems to be a lull board wide. Maybe its postflood depression.

The news keeps moving though with 10 new politcal topics a day-yawn.

Maybe its the new layout, kinda like gmail, saw no need for it ;)

Even the food section is marmite this, vegemite that, hardly inspiring.

Perhaps we need a poll by jt to come to a non consensus?

You seem to have defeated your own argument by starting this unique new topic, however lest keep to the spirit of what you are saying......I suggest the following topics should be posted in general forthwith, lets see who can add to it then we'll get started ( or possibly banned ), so.....my topic titles are.....

Should Fat Farang Be Charged More For Taking Up Too Much Space On Songthaews/

Why Are There No Ladyboy Tuk Tuk Drivers?

Why Do Scandinavians Never Smile in Thailand?

If The Japanese Economy Is Stagnating, How Can They Afford To Pay The Ladies So Much?

Should Farang Face A Firing Squad For Buying Houses They Can't Own In Thailand?

The Secret To A Successful Marriage In Thailand ( If Your Broke Already ) .....I think that will be a short topic

If Brits Were Banned From Pattaya Would The Local Economy Collapse?

Why Do Brits In Thailand Love Complaining About Britain...... that will be a long topic

If You Married A Tuk Tuk Driving Ladyboy Would You Have To Pay Sinsot?

Have You Ever Considered Starting A Jet Ski Business In Thailand?

You get the idea, carry on.....I'm away to New Zealand for a few days, I want to see it before it liquefies.

^ All excellent topics!!!

Another one could be a pinned, general 'Grouchy Smurf' topic where people can complain about anything. It would have someone wondering why socks in Thailand only last a short time before developing holes in them, or people can vent at having those count-down clocks at traffic lights indicating how much longer it will be green, only for some traffic cop attendant then deciding to cut it short and move it to Red ahead of time. I'm sure there's loads more.

One more possibility on why General is getting less traffic: As the other forums become more popular, and as cliques form in various sub-forums, there is less inclination of posting in General. So often there is a somewhat general topic (or at least something that applies to Thailand as a whole) but people still opt to float it in for example the Chiang Mai forum, and then add a topic sub-title of 'In Chiang Mai!!' in an attempt to prevent it being trucked off to General or some place else outside the regular clique.

i agree, all excellent topics, so get posting lad, we need the variety.

to add:

How do you tell a colleague in Thailand he smells?

Kwai, that may be so, but with membership steadily rising, wouldn't more new posters first gravitate to general, thus replace those lost to subf fora. I would also posit that sub fora are generally even more sluggish than general so wouldn't people return to general eventually?

Possibly because members actually know where to post a topic properly now? wink.png

indeed, if that were the case than why are there investment and child rearing threads in general?

I was also curious as to why those threads had not been moved.

this wasn't intended to be a negative post despite what some here may believe, in fact i worded it quite carefully. i was merely, as zzaa009 remarked, observing and pointing out what i had observed.

I could have cynically pointed out that all the threads that were allowed to remain had been marked as "hot" threads, but i left that alone.

either way, some here do agree that there is a lull in diversified content and opinion on the board and i do not think it is as easily dismissed as you would have it.

And you are still saying that your OP was not a complaint. rolleyes.gif Maybe the posts you are referring to was made by newbies, and they didn't know that there was other subforums available. So what, in due time they will be redirected to the right forum.

Not the Chiang Mai forum. Very often a current topic drops to the second page within a single day.

(There's a topic with the last post at 3pm this afternoon, it's now 11pm and I have to go find it on page two.. )
