webfact Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 ABAC Poll: Most Bangkokians find terrorism possible BANGKOK, 21 January 2012 (NNT) - A recent opinion survey by Assumption University has found that most Bangkok people believe terror attack in the capital is possible and have a little confidence in the government security measures. The survey, conducted with nearly 1,200 Bangkok-dwellers aged over 18 during January 18-20, has shown that 73 percent keep themselves updated on the news about terror threat in the capital. Nearly 58 percent think that the government is not well-prepared for terror attacks while the rest think the opposite. As much as 58 percent believe a terror attack is possible. Almost 56 percent find the information from the US more reliable than that given by the Thai government. Sixty-three percent deem that an additional budget needs to be allocated to the Royal Thai Police to boost its counter-terror ability. Citing the results of the survey, the research head suggested that anti-terror approaches such as telephone tapping, use of social networks, a closer watch on bomb-making chemical and arms smuggling, and eradication of corrupt practices among border and immigration officials as well as law amendment should be strictly and swiftly carried out so that related agencies can handle the problems more effectively. -- NNT 2012-01-21
givenall Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Thai should be worried about their own government not the terrorists 1
OZEMADE Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Seems that the Thai People are more aware of what is going on than the Officials. They also see that there is a need to go on the alert in relation to the Terrorist and Bomb threat. Almost 56 percent find the information from the US more reliable than that given by the Thai government. Sixty-three percent deem that an additional budget needs to be allocated to the Royal Thai Police to boost its counter-terror ability.
ozzieman05 Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Government and red shirts not worried about terrorism Thai wife says They wrote the book 1
RogueExpat Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Thai should be worried about their own government not the terrorists One could argue that this government actually condones terrorism considering that some of it's key players, and or spouses/relatives/friends, have been charged with terrorism......
Pib Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Maybe the U.S. Embassy web site should also have a Thai language version to help keep the Thai people informed of possible terrorist activities in Thailand. No, no, the more I think about it, the news coverage that occurs when Thai officials deny any terrorist activities gets the word out much faster and to more people.
MaiChai Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 (edited) People have short memories... Remember bombs being set off, was it last year, in Bangkok? Then there was all the red shirt terrorizing. Then there is the insurgency in the South that has been going on at least 7 years? Then there is alot of gun related crime and much more drug related crime that ever before. Then there is all the tourism related crime; mainly in Pattaya and Phuket. Thailand is no longer safe like it used to be. I would say its much more lawless now than I ever remember it? Lets face it, Thailand is not a safe tourist destination? noitom Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 (edited) Thailand is not safe. There is virtually no security. fro the time you enter the airport until the time that you leave. It is lawless and very risky for foreigners. No legal recourse, no defense, being totally outside a system of any support. Many only learn this after something happens. The news is false and often a misrepresentation. There is no 'reliable" and "timely" English news. An accident, a disagreement, a sickness, faulty something, and on and on. During the daytime in business areas, it is still relatively safe from crime but not terrorism. But wait until you are in an accident, have a dispute with a taxi, get hit by a motorcycle on the sidewalk and you try to resolve it or to get police help. Thailand is a very dangerous place. The criminal and the terrorist knows he has the Thai system in his favor, and the non-criminal knows it is safe to become one. The main thing is that most Thais have nothing to lose, and that is the most dangerous person in the world. This presents a terrorist opportunity that is hard to find elsewhere in the world. All of that said, the total lack of security and management, corruption and graft, and lawlessness, gives rise to an excellent environment for terrorist cell group formation, recruiting, and activity. The large population of tourists and crowd density in public places presents an excellent opportunity for terrorists to select prime targets and cause the most damage. Security at the airport is a joke, building and public transportation security is laughable. When was the last time you saw any security precautions maintained regularly? How about those bag checks at MRT entrances where you flash your bag unzipped and the security person glances the other way or doesn't look at anything and just waves that hand?
