Not talking classics here but just splashes of oil on canvas to brighten up a room. MBK has some sold by the artist but are 8000bht for a 120 x 120 cm and the frames can cost more

does anyone know where there is a larger selection thats not in a department store?

There quite a few "galleries" along Sukhumvit in the Phrom Phung area, but again, not cheap. Maybe worth a day trip to Pattaya if you want several. There is an alley alongside MIKE SHOPPING MALL on Beach Rd that has about 30 artist kiosks with a lot of varied selections. Quality is varied also; some very good, some not so much. Prices are negotiable but are much lower than what you will find in Bangkok. They are also able to re-produce almost any painting you might want. Most have art books filled with selections.

There is an excellent frame shop in Bangkok on Sukhumvit, midway between Phra Khanong and Ekkamai on the even side. They are the best I have used and are reasonably priced.

Thanks dave will check out the Pattaya one next trip. A mate when he travelled to china bought plenty from some art universtiy , hundreds if not a thousand artists there and dirt cheap

You might also check out the pictures and frames at Chatu Chak market. The "Arty" section is quite large with a wide variety of subjects. Many of the little shops are open during the week so you can browse and avoid most of the crowds. Worth a look anyway.

RE art at JJ....any idea on how flexible on the price they are? Do they typically start off crazy high or are they a little high with a little room to work down?

JJ can start pretty high but much of the art on display there though formulaic, is of a higher overall quality than most sold elsewhere.

I don't know which universities have large art departments or where the larger art schools are located but looking for and attending student art sales can be really rewarding. I've never done it here in Bangkok but in my home city I used to go to them regularly and ended up with some great items that I have treasured over the years.

in Bangkok, Silpakorn University has complete art studies and always small private exhibitions and galleries. then Chulalongkorn University's Industrial Design Department has good ceramics.

Grawburg, I have only limited experiance of buying from JJ, but like most flea markets, they will come down if you work on them. Always a good idea to bring a Thai with you, no mater how good you speak, you will (almost) never get the same deal that a Thai can. Anyway, it's a good place to browse.

JJ or Chatuchak Market (sometimes spelled with either a C or a J, hence the confusion), can easily be reached by taxi, BTS or MRT. If taxi, ask for "Chatuchak Mall" which is on the outskirts of the market and also worth a look.

BTS, simply follow to Bang Sue and again you are on the outskirts, but not far to walk. I (personally) prefer to use the MRT to Kham Pang Phet (sorry for spelling). Do not take the exit for the "Farmers Association of Thailand" (or something similar) as this brings you out on the wrong side of the road (although for fresh produce it is also well worth a look). The remaining exit brings you onto a corner of the market, at the bottom of the escalator is a large map of the market to help you find what you are looking for.

I hope this is of some help, anyway, have a good day out!
