Jealous Boyfriend Guns Down Ex-Girlfriend After Reconciliation Fails in Yasothon
Picture courtesy of Khoasod. A 24-year-old woman was shot dead by her ex-boyfriend in the early hours of the morning of 17 April, after fleeing their abusive relationship. The suspect, 30-year-old Mr. Phantawat, was arrested shortly after the incident and has confessed to the killing. The fatal shooting took place at a residence in Samakkhi subdistrict, Loeng Nok Tha district, Yasothon province. Police and forensic officers, accompanied by rescue services and medical personnel, responded to an emergency call reporting a shooting. Upon arrival, they found the body of a young woman lying face up inside the house with multiple gunshot wounds to her face, hip, and leg. Several .380 calibre bullet casings were recovered at the scene. The victim’s grieving family identified the shooter as her boyfriend, Mr. Phantawat, who fled the scene immediately after the shooting. Investigators launched a manhunt and later apprehended the suspect at his home in Som Pho subdistrict, Thai Charoen district, Yasothon. He was found in possession of the firearm used in the crime and taken into custody for questioning. During interrogation, Mr. Phantawat admitted to the murder, stating that his girlfriend had recently left him due to repeated instances of physical abuse, stemming from his extreme jealousy. The couple had reportedly been in a relationship for over a year, but frequent quarrels and violent outbursts from the suspect had driven the woman to return to her family home. “I tried to reconcile with her all night,” the suspect said. “But when she tried to leave the house around 5 a.m. to go to a relative’s nearby, I lost control. I followed her and shot her until the magazine was empty, then ran back to my house.” Neighbours confirmed the couple’s troubled relationship, describing frequent fights, especially over the man’s possessiveness and fear that his partner would leave him for someone else. “We often heard shouting and saw bruises on her,” one resident said. “This morning, we heard gunshots, a woman scream ‘ouch!’, and then more shots. Then it went quiet.” Police have sent the victim’s body for a post-mortem examination and have charged Mr. Phantawat with murder and firearms offences. -- 2025-04-17 -
