Drug convicts to be concentrated in Ratchaburi

BANGKOK: -- A large number of drug convicts incarcerated at Bangkok's Bang Kwang maximum-security prison will soon be transferred to Khao Bin prison in Ratchaburi as part of an effort to clamp down on drug dealing inside jails, the Corrections Department said yesterday.

Inmates serving time for drug convictions at other major prisons including Bangkok's Klong Prem and Central Correctional Institution for Drug Addicts, plus Klong Phai Prison in Nakhon Ratchasima, would be transferred to Khao Bin later, Kobkiat Kasiwiwat, the department's deputy director-general, said.

All together, about 500 prisoners would be moved, including inmates at the main prisons in Ayutthaya, Rayong, Phitsanulok, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Chiang Mai.

Designated areas would also be established for drug convicts in all prisons to separate them from other inmates, who are frequently paid at present to act as drug couriers, or to smuggle in mobile phones and other contraband, Kobkiat said.

Guards at Khao Bin and other prisons will wear a new uniform free of metal badges and be required to check in for duty empty-handed and undergo a security procedure of the same standard deployed at airports, including metal-detectors. Kobkiat said prison guards typically bring bags of personal belongings and food with them to work, making inspections and control difficult.

Devices to jam mobile-phone signals have been installed at Khao Bin, said Kobkiat, adding that the use of satellite phones between inmates and drug dealers outside prisons was not much of a worry because satellite-phone users were required to register the devices. Tighter controls on the sale of unregistered SIM cards should be imposed, he said.

A Justice Ministry source said a recent proposal to build a prison for all drug convicts on an island was a good idea, but had been scrapped because of high logistical costs and the extra incentives and conditions that would be needed to recruit prison personnel and guards.

Meanwhile, in a series of arrests in Surat Thani, police apprehended 10 people including a former inmate of the provincial jail, who confessed to throwing a mobile phone over the prison wall for Bt10,000.

Suspect Somyos Srithep said he had met a group of drug convicts while serving his sentence. Each had paid him to throw a phone over the wall after he was released. Among those arrested with him was Phongsak Maneechote, who had an M-16 assault rifle and ammunition.

Meanwhile, a non-commissioned Army officer accused of aiding an Army major implicated in a large drug haul was in court custody yesterday. Sgt-Major Venus Srijai was attached to an engineering battalion based in the North. He is reportedly a close aide to Major Piyanat Ketjamras, who was implicated by Niphon Kanchart, currently in custody after crystal methamphetmine and amphetamine tablets worth Bt1 billion were found at a Bangkok home he was renting from an actress.

Separately in Chiang Mai, an Army anti-drug unit killed three foreign drug couriers in a gunfight yesterday in Mae Ai district, before seizing 5 kg of heroin. Some other couriers sustained injuries and retreated over the border into Burma.

A gunfight in the same area on January 20 saw two foreign couriers killed and resulted in the seizure of 100,000 amphetamine tablets and 8 kg of crystal meth.

Anyone know why Thailand does not adopt the same Zero tolerance as other countries such as Singapore, Dubai, Japan etc?

The death penalty is fair payback for dealers who have already ruined thousands of lives and families and killed hundreds of innocent people hooked on their products.

The problem in Thailand is the prison authorities are way too soft on these cun_ts so when they are released they continue trading.

There is only one solution - get tough and apply the "death for drug dealers" rule.

Ice and Yabba is as available as candy, my 17yo son is hooked on Ice and he cheats, lies and steals to continue the habit, he has made me broke many times and its simply broken my heart to see a good honest well educated kid turn rotten. I WANT TO SEE THE DEALERS EXECUTED.

My heart goes out to you newermonkey. Addiction destroys families and people. No one sets out to be an addict, it's a curse that finds them. I lost a brother to addiction and during that time, I often begged, pleaded and cry with him to stop. He had moments when he told me he wished he were some one else, wished he were me. Little did I know and later denied, I was an alcoholic. My addiction was just as alive in me as my brother. I wasn't a brown bag skidrow drinker, but a drunk anyhow. One thing I discovered was there was "NO" help for me, until I wanted to help myself. I now truly understand addiction and agree, there are times when it is best for the person and society to lock them away. You can't help them by empowering or enabling them, they must act for themselves. My brother was a good kind man, who would have given you the shirt off his back, but he was an addict. I can only say, you can be there for your son emotionally, make sure he knows that, but any other help, will only harm you and him. You have done the hardest thing any parent has ever been asked to do, turn away from a child. Let him know if he seeks help you will be there to love and emotionally support him, offer any support emotionally he needs, but the bank is closed. Know you are not alone as well, many people has suffered the same and if you reach out, they are there to help you.

My prayers are with you

If there were no demand, there would be no dealers. Get your son into rehab.

Do you also want your son to suffer the same fate.

Easier said than done. You can count the effective treatment adolescent treatment centers on one hand. Yes there are lots of places that claim to offer treatment, but the staff are short on qualifications, short on successful interventions and those that have some success are not affordable for those that need the services.

And please no one suggest the wats. The number of complications and health problems that arise when subjects are parked in such facilities is significant. Adolescents need a secure setting with access to medical and psychological care. There is an absolute shortage of psychologists in the country and the number of psychologists with the training necessary for adolescent needs is far below the demand. It takes a strong family, with parents with the means and abilities to respond. It's like doing major work on a car. If you don't have the equipment and the knowledge to do the work, even if you are a nobel prize winner with a billion baht in the bank, you can't fix the car. Unfortunately, the only option at this time is to disrupt the drug trade and that means isolating the trafficers.

I've worked with many drug addicts in Europe. Loads of them went to a therapy paid by the government instead of going to prison, called REHABILITATION. A one year therapy at this time was about 60,000 bucks.

Many of them made their last shot on the same day when came out of rehab. I do understand where you're going through. But please think about so many druggies all around the world being addicted to drugs. Many have to sell drugs to get their Kick, not even thinking that they are doing anything wrong..

Forget the money you'd spent for him, the problem is caused by society, circumstances, friends and more. Sometimes also caused by problems in the family, IF people can talk about EVERYTHING some might not take drugs, being teens.

You want to kill them all? How would it be when your best friend's son or daughter would be sentenced to death for smuggling drugs, without ever seen drugs before, because somebody was using her/him as a courier?

Do you know how many people already got killed because of fake statements, cops, wrong or no evidence etc...? Happened in LOS in 2002 under Thaksin's regime. ONLY 2,700 people got killed by cops, but all of them were trying to shoot a cop? The actual number was much higher though.

You're not alone having a drug addict in your family, but now it's up to you now to SEE the light at the end of the tunnel. DO SOMETHING!

Hope you do remember when millions of people got killed just because of their human race in second world war in the so called "Concentration camps."

Can you even imagine that it's the hell on earth to be addicted to drugs and having family to support? Would you pull the trigger to shoot a drug dealer? Sorry, don't want to go on..........Cheers-M. jap.gif

I can't think of a better way to create nation wide drug rings,

routes and alliances, than to house ALL the drug dealers

together in one place.

Because the Army took over with the coupe in 2002, that is Thaksin had "Zero Tolerence" adapted, but the Army wanted a piece of the pie, wanted to be head of the nest sort to speak.

Zero Tolerence with all dealers and trafficerscrazy.gif , take the swift end to drugs, or the slow death using drugs, especially Ya Bahclap2.gif
