BANGKOK, 15 February 2012 (NNT) - The prime minister has instructed the governors of 10 provinces, from upstream to downstream rivers, to finish the growing of water-retention forestland within 3 months.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said on Tuesday that the government is now encouraging locals in flood-prone areas to adopt the various royally-initiated projects, related to the management of upstream forests, the construction of check dams and the ecological preservation.

The PM's comment was heard during her meeting with related ministers and 10 provincial governors in Phitsanulok Province.

The Premier said that she hopes the Thai people will become more connected to and realize the value of green forestland in the near future.

And in order to help speed up such works, PM Yingluck has assigned related agencies and ministries to take charge of all coherent projects, while instructing the 10 governors to complete the planting of fast-growing trees and the construction of check dams within 3 months.

The prime minister has pledged to allocate a budget to support all these projects.

Moreover, she has discussed with related ministers about the lowering of the minimum water detention at all dams from 60% to 45%, in order to help ease the impact from possible flooding in the future.

Minor details only, but for reforestation you need to take care of a few things like

- having 'suitable' land allocated for growing forests

- have sufficient numbers of saplings available

- having enough people to plant saplings

- having people to watch over (i.e. protect) and tend the saplings

Once you planned the activities you can start implementing assuming you've got a budget. To speed up the project depends on availability of resources. If insufficient saplings are available you may need to grow some. If topsoil has washed away you may need to dump some new topsoil and use nets to keep it in place.

I am sure its a translation thing, no-one is that stupid surely.

But everywhere I go in these days I see people chopping down trees and making charcoal, whole areas have been cleared near where we live. The fact that most of these areas are on hillsides really does worry me.

Hope they do a better job and show some more appreciation to the green areas, forests and national parks......than what disgraceful things they did to the road to one of the largest and oldest national parks in the country.....but I doubt it as it is almost always lip service.....follow up and planning means crap in this place.

The headline was misleading... (deliberately?). Even so, planting the trees within the next 3 months is likely to be ineffective. Saplings will not survive heavy flooding. As a long-term solution, it's a good idea, but much more needs to be done with the waterways and illegal land management if Yingluck wants more forest.

For know I still see the army cutting down huge trees in the North of Thailand. It happens all the time. As long as the authorities themselves make loads of money out of cutting down forests it is hard to tell villagers not to do the same.

1. Whose land will the forest be planted on? (and also the monkey cheek retention dams)
   
2. Will villagers whose land is used be compensated? If so by how much?
   
3. Who will be responsible for maintaining the forests?
   
4. What are the consequences of chopping down the forest?
   
5. Where will the saplings come from?
   
6. Are the saplings suitable for the local climate?
   
7. Is it actually possible to plant a whole forest in 3 months?

apparently the government has got hold of a huge microwave. just pop in the trees,turn the dial and hey presto, fully grown trees. only costs 50 sqagillion thai baht and they know someone who has one goin cheap.

• Where will the saplings come from? I would guess the Ministry of Agriculture's Tree Farms?
  
• Are the saplings suitable for the local climate? Why would they plant otherwise? Don't think they will import trees from Greenland.
  
• Is it actually possible to plant a whole forest in 3 months? No. But it is possible to begin the plan WITHIN 3 months as the article states.

OT: I think it's a wonderful move in the right direction. Time will tell how this will work out, as there are many hurdles to be taken before this is can be called a success.

If you've been here for any length of time, oh say, 3 months or so, minimum, you will have noted a modicum of Thai/English gets lost in translation. No one, not even the most disparaging of frang relating to anything Thai, could fail to spot the obvious mistake in the initial wording 'completed within three months' ultimately reading:

Your knee jerk reply missed the point of my post. The article is poorly written and the real problem is the illegal logging which has stripped Thailand of much of its forests. Planting trees will do no good if they are just chopped down as soon as they are big enough. The problem of course is that people in high places make the profits from the illegal logging industry so it is unlikely to change. These are probably the same people who will skim a good portion of the cost of planting the trees.
