Hotel fight to drag on

Thanatpong Khongsai

The Nation

BANGKOK:-- The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will use the blueprints of a hotel ordered demolished in Soi Ruam Rudee in its appeal against the decision, a BMA executive said yesterday.

On February 9, the Central Administrative Court ruled in favour of residents in Soi Ruam Rudee in their suit against the BMA and Aetas Bangkok Hotel. The court ruled the BMA unlawfully allowed the hotel to be built on Soi Ruam Rudee, as the soi is not 10 metres wide.

Pathumwan District Office could gather evidence showing that it and the BMA Public Works Office's Building Control Division approved construction based on information on the blueprints showing construction to be legal, the source said. If the district office was shown by the document to have supported the soi's width as being 10 metres for its entire length, the BMA was confident it could show it wasn't in the wrong, the source said.

Even if the BMA successfully appeals on this basis, however, it could still face a problem down the road. The company that built the hotel might decide to argue in court that the district office allowed illegal encroachment on the road that reduced the width of the soi, leading to the demolition order. This line of argument would prolong the legal fiasco, the source said.

Foreign Ministry not worried about Thailand getting tangled in Iran-Israel conflict

BANGKOK, 19 February 2012 (NNT) - The Foreign Ministry is not worried that the implication of Iranian nationals in last week's explosions in Bangkok will push it into the ongoing conflicts between Iran and Israel.

Mr. Thani Thongphakdi, Director-General of the Department of Information and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, revealed that the Office of the Attorney General is now working with the Royal Thai Police to prepare all needed documents for the extradition of another suspect in last week's blasts.

Five people, including the bomber, were injured in 3 explosions on Soi Pridi Phanomyong 31 in Bangkok last Tuesday. So far, 2 suspects, Mohammad Hazaei and Saeid Moradi, have been detained by the Thai police and another one arrested by Malaysian authorities.

Mr. Thani said that once all documents are ready, the Foreign Ministry will approach the Malaysian government to work on the extradition of the third suspect, Masoud Sedaghatzadeh, to Thailand.

He elaborated that Malaysia can detain the wanted suspect for only 14 days, therefore, the Ministry is to complete all process within this deadline.

The Foreign Ministry Spokesperson is confident that Thailand's investigation into the blasts, which involved Iranian nationals, will not put the country into the middle of the conflicts between Iran, Israel and the United States.

He also stressed that Thailand will continue to hold a neutral stance, while expressing hope that related nations will respect this country's sovereignty and let investigators carry out the probe without interference.
