Is It Legal To Own Or Keep A Civet

Featured Replies

I was just wondering if there are any laws against keeping a civet. A guy I know has one, but I am not sure if it is legal. He got it of another guy and apparently it has been a pet since it was born 2 years ago. I think he wants to feed it coffee and sell the poop.

I would suggest if it is a native (SE Asian Civet) then it needs a license - if it's an African Civet, then as long as it was imported legally, then I guess its OK. There are laws here about keeping native wildlife as pets. Not sure if

authorities would know the difference though. They are nocturnal, so no great pets I guess.

I think for coffee it's got to be the Indian Palm Civet, which is on the endangered list in some countries (not sure about Cities), so probably officially illegal.

Thanks for the replies, any ideas on how to find out for sure. Is there a department in charge of such things?

From a recent raid by the Department of National Parks at the respected Wildlife Friends of Thailand Foundation, where the discussion is still ongoing about what is legal & what is not, I believe a Civet is not an animal needing registration.

In answer to you original post, I suggest you contact the Department of National Parks Thailand & discuss your question with them.

As to whether you get a response is questionalble, as is everything in respect of that department.

**Mods, this is not lobbying, it is intended to be informative.**

if you happen to live in the jungle, perfectly ok.

come on: why don´t you move in with him and not adapt him to human living, where he is really not meant to be? sorry for the harsh words, but I just can´t imagine a civet living in a moobaan/cage (omg)

I already explained the civet is not mine, but the cage is in the jungle under a big tree if that makes you feel better.

Thanks Ally for your info, much appreciated.

Just don't...eh?

actually, contrary to popular belief proper copee luak needs to be from wild civet cats choosing the beans. If you just feed them a plate of the coffee beans, then it isn't going to be high grade coffee for the most part.

Not sure where you could release the little fella now as long as the enclosure is a decent size I guess....
