Smokers have the right to smoke anywhere they are allowed to under law or the rules of an establishment.

if you don't want to passive smoke, then go in all of the places that are non smoking. There are plenty to choose from.

We smokers abide by the law, and try not to bother others. But if you have a problem with it, then please raise the point politely. You will find we are still human. If you take my cigarette out of my mouth, talk down to me or suchlike, then I will do my best to ensure more smoke comes in your direction.

If I am smoking somewhere and someone comes in and sits near me when there are plenty of places away from me smoking, then dam_n right they should move if they have a problem with it. I'm not running away from non smokers constantly in case they have an issue. Raise the issue with me, and I will most likely move or point out that I was already smoking when THEY made the choice to sit near me.

As for the op. You're a Muppet.

well said. anti-smokers might want to heed the words of bill hicks once in a while.

  • Actually, Good Ol Boy Bill is demonstrating typical smokers' behaviours:
  • ********************************************************************************************************************
  • 'simple denial: deny the reality of the unpleasant fact altogether
  • minimisation: admit the fact but deny its seriousness (a combination of denial and rationalization)
  • projection: admit both the fact and seriousness but deny responsibility.

The concept of denial is particularly important to the study of addiction.' - Wiki

But the topic relates to how we should treat each other, and I have suggested, and am convinced, that those of us who are not addicted should select kindness every bit as much as pity. Humour as sometimes helps, unless you hit a nerve.

heh. excellent of course but that clip didn't contain the line i was thinking of. "if anybody here has a problem with my smoking, i suggest you take a look around you at the world in which we live and you know, shut your fuc_king mouth."

most smokers i know and encounter in chiang mai are perfectly polite and considerate of non-smokers. we only smoke in designated smoking areas. whereas militant anti-smokers always appear to have piles and constipation and absolutely no joy in their lives.

Discussions about smoking (in public) have the same character like talking about politics or religion.

The smokers here in this thread BELIEVE they don’t make any health problem to others. The addiction is defended by all means und ugly words against all sanity. Take a smoker to a cancer clinic and let them see the smokers to be dying they will find an excuse.

Their reaction to your post has traits of some religious fanatics. Never concede the proven truth, but believe ......

BTW. My Post #17 wasn’t pro smoking, but against inconsequent whining and whinging

don't think that's remotely true at all. i don't know any smokers that are stupid enough to believe that smoking isn't bad for you. ergo i don't know any that are living in denial.

what i have a problem with is holier than though anti-smokers - not non-smokers by the way - who want the entire world to be a non-smoking place because they say so. if you don't like smoking and don't want to breathe second hand smoke, go to a non-smoking restaurant or bar. there are plenty around. you can't miss them. they're the ones where all the miserable people are sat together finding something else to complain about.

The danger to your health from the whiff of cigarette smoke is the equivalent to zero compared to the shit all of us pump out from our cars/motosighs.

You run a vehicle here? You use tuk tuks ...Yes? Then you are killing yourself and everyone else just as surely as if you were smoking - in fact more so. Can you deny that?

Any religious fervor here is the domain of the anti smokers who deny they sh** up the atmosphere at all. The easy target is the smoker as you perceive to have the higher moral ground. But ......if you felt strong enough you'd campaign against the massive toxic outpourings of Thai cars/trucks/buses. But me thinks you just like to whinge.

100% correct and these green folk neeeeeeeeeever think about the thousands of liters of burnt aviation fuel that is put into the air on their behalf to go on holiday, or fly home. They should go back home by canoe if they are a ''real'' green eh.

Sit near a smoker and nothing will happen to you, sit near your exhaust pipe and you will be dead in short order.

Everyone has thier reason to dislike smoking, my father will not see this coming christmas because of ciggarettes, his legs are dark purple almost black, covered with what looks like scales and he stinks like death but he still smokes and loves his benson and hedges special filter.

This coming 10th of March will make a year for me without smokes, I used to love smoking but with my future right in front of me what could I do. I wouldn't argue with a smoker about it, I just smile and think this and that.

I can easily understand the attitude of the smokers who have contributed to this thread but at the same time I just can't.

Keep smoking your cigarettes, one day you will not be in a position where you can ignore the facts.

We all have decisions in life and it isn't written in stone how long we should live. Live your life how you want to till you expire. Many pop off early being totally green and a vegetarian ta-boot. People up in the NE are popping off all over the place with stomach and bowl/intestine cancer through eating bara and uncooked fish, but try telling them to stop eating the crap.

And my sister died at 49 from breast cancer and never smoked in her life. Can't live your life in a bubble.

I have seen references to non smoking pubs and restaurants if I wanted to avoid smokers here on the thread?

I was under the impression that all pubs restaurants in Thailand were non smoking.

What is the law in ths respect?

Just follow your nose if you can, through all the illegal smog and smoke. Should be safe then.

What is the law in ths respect?

Thailand bans Smoking in Pubs, Restaurants, Clubs and Market Places

Friday, 15 February 2008

Thailand has further extended a national ban on smoking in public areas to include pubs, restaurants, discos and market-places, both open-air and air-conditioned.

Previously, the regulations applied only to public buildings and closed air-conditioned areas. The regulations took effect February 11, 2008.

Individual violators can be fined as much as 2,000 baht (US$65). If any public places violate the rules, they will be warned but after May 31, 2008, they are supposed to be fined 20,000 baht.

Smokers are however permitted to smoke in designated areas which the affected places will have to set aside. Many pubs such as Molly Malone's have converted their second level as their smoking area while the downstairs has become completely non smoking.

Numerous public places in Thailand are planning to distribute brochures and post signs in at least five languages such as Thai, English, Korean, Chinese and Japanese to inform tourists of the new regulation.

We stayed in a hotel in Singapore just 3 weeks ago that had a designated smoking area next to the kitchen!

There are also signs right in the middle of the street saying no alcohol and no smoking if I remember.

I think you will find that every smoker actually does know the facts. They do know it kills them. But it is their choice to continue, it is an addiction.

I don't think this thread is really about smokers knowing the facts, it's more to do with them smoking where they are allowed to smoke and the anti smokers telling them to move.

Smokers are finding it very difficult to find a place they get the ok to smoke. Understandably, when they do find those places they don't like it when someone wanders in and tells them they can't.

Sorry to hear about your Father's problem. I like your post it at least has some sense in it, I am a non smoker and do not mind people smoking in a bar, I have always thought it is their leisure time and they can smoke if they want - I hate the smell and try to keep upwind if possible. I feel people should be able to smoke in a bar but also think the owner has a duty to try to keep the air quality as good as possible with decent ventilation and perhaps fans etc.

I must admit though I wont put up with smoking in a restaurant - I think its pretty bad manners in that case, having said that it does not happen much but on the odd occasion it does I leave - easy!

100% correct. I used to like a great dinner a finish with a cigar and port, but the places had extraction systems so nobody was bothered. Winston always had a cigar on and noooooo probs eh. drunk.gif

I have traveled quite a bit of Thailand and in general, I find that smoking is only allowed inside establishment where Farang drink. Where there are no farang the smoking rules are obeyed! This resolves the problem of second hand smoke.

For people who are scared/complained about exhaust emissions, how would you resolve this problem and still keep the country moving?

just because we have exhaust fumes that are bad for us, I do not see that as a justification for us to breath in other toxins, that can be avoided!
