Ulysses G.
the topic is about Global House but since you mention it how can you say there is no torture happening at Guantanamo Bay? the internet is full of information on the types of music played at deafening levels to prisoners detained there Punishing mass murderers by subjecting them to classical music? TongueThaied
The Global House jingle is not nearly as bad as the woman at many department stores screaming store specials at the top of her lungs in non-stop rapid-speak into the store's over-amplified PA system. If THAT doesn't induce a headache, nothing will.
Mestizo
Having to put up with boorish replies on lighthearted threads (the norm on TV today) is even more tortuous. Any chance you could nick off to Teak Door? ...says the king of boorish replies. :jerk:

Bonnie and me raised Holy Hell out West in the 30's. Stealin' cars, robbin' banks, and killin' people. By the 60's it was all but forgotten. When along come Arthur Penn and made a movie that turned us into culture heros. You wouldn't find some random dude on the web denying we did what we did now. That's for goddam sure. jamesbrock
what the hell were you doing there for five hours? At Royal Flora? I think I spent 8 hours there - a couple of times. Great show. Yep, I meant Royal Flora. A stiflingly hot, very hazy day, but in the end it was the incessant jingle that got the better of me. Once I realised it was on a loop around lunchtime, the day just got worse and worse!
BigJohnnyBKK
Punishing mass murderers by subjecting them to classical music? Those dastardly yanks! I think many would agree that if someone is actually proven to be a mass murderer, then just about any punishment would be fitting. When such methods are used to pressure people that are simply suspected of such, perhaps arbitrarily or accidentally accused, and they have none of the rights civilized society usually grants to people in this position, it's another story. As is allowing the executive branch to summarily execute people by videogames, never mind collateral damage. The harm that America has inflicted on itself by its "war on terror" far exceeds that which any terrorist attacks could have done over the past ten years. It would have been much more in US citizen's interest (not to mention the rest of the world) to simply try to catch and prevent terrorism through normal, legal and sane methods and accept the occasional loss of a few thousand innocent lives, as we do by accepting legal drugs like alcohol, private automobiles driven at high speed, gun ownership etc. Just as with the "war on drugs", the cost in lives, national treasure, fundamental ethical/legal values, and basic self-respect has been far too high. We're just accelerating our empire and culture's historical decline and fall.
hanuman1
I've got to agree with the OP. That jolly GH jingle drives me nuts too - several trips a day sometimes for about five months and I'll probably never forget it. Big C's "Shopping Station, Shopping Season" comes a close second and both should be classed as dangerous weapons. Sylvia's Mother heads my all time list of things-that-go-round-and-round-in-your-head and I hope never to have to hear it again..... A war crime in the battle between consumerism and common sense, Big C's "Shopping Station, Shopping Season" was an atrocity. Have been in Global House many times but never heard an annoying jingle. To discover something that undercuts "Shopping Station, Shopping Season" being played at GH is like discovering that your best mate beats his wife. And kids. scorecard
Rim Ping, especially the store near Narawat bridge is shopping paradise. Walk in and you're greeted with a blast of cold air, classical music and counter staff coo-ing "Ah Khun Nancy, good to see you". Their Airport Plaza Store gets honorable mention, but the customer service reps don't see the incoming customers and the cramped conditions can get on your nerves. I almost hate the fact that I've learned Thai when I'm at Tops Supermarket because I can understand all the mindless Thai jingles on their P.A. It was so much better when it was gibberish. It's no surprise that I avoid the products advertised in the jingles. Full marks to Rimping near Airport Plaza, staff always very helpful and polite. I often call my Thai daughter in law (at home) for her to explain to the Rimping staff some obscure product or item she wants - all staff always very cooperative. A couple of times the staff have found the product they think is a match then asked me to take a photo and send by SMS to DIL for confirmation. Usually correct. One staff lady always makes a big fuss of my 7 yr old granddaughter - staff lady if fascinated by the fact my GD speaks perfect Thai and perfect English. Full marks. Yup, that sounds like Rim Ping Airport Plaza. I just wish the place wasn't so cramped. The manager, Khun Pin, and her staff do a wonderful job. She used to be at the Narawat store and then disappeared. I was so thrilled when I moved to the other side of town, went to Rim Ping Airport Plaza and discovered Khun Pim again. It was like a homecoming. I must admit to sneaking off to the Narawat store about once a month, just to get things not carried at Airport Plaza. canuckamuck
Just noticed this old thread. I completely agree that the Global house audio loop is maddening. It is only about a 30 sec loop and never quits. I am sure their staff is totally bonkers by now. Horrible stuff. My visits there are always shorter because I can only take so much. Which makes Global house bitter sweet for me, because it also one of my favorite places to be in Chiang Mai. Maybe I should get sort of music pod thingy. Number 2 On the list of annoying audio loops is Home-Pro, and the Carefour one was awful as well.
DaamNaam
Mangpong ( DVD's and CD's) near the aquarium , ground floor Centan Airport...Every time, and I mean every time I pass they are playing Credence. rene123
Thanks for my morning laugh, nattydread. I can sympathize with you. Don't know if it's true but I read they played 'inna godda da vida' over and over at huge volume in order to drive Noriega out of his bunker.
