Summary of facts and what we have:

50 year old male, UK. Currently on tourist visa up to 30 Mar, with a 30 day visa extension available (unused).

Married in Bangkok late December last year, we have the certificate and kor sor 2.

We are in Bangkok, as our business is mainly here.

Wife has changed ID card and house registration to married name but address is in Surat as this house is hers.

I have a supporting picture of us outside the house in Surat, plus pictures of us together over the years, as early as 2004.

If necessary can do pictures at apartment in Bangkok where we live.

1. What should I be applying for? (English and Thai transliteration if possible).

2. Is it possible to do this in Bangkok even though my wife's id and tabien ban is registered in Surat?

3. Despite being told not to, the Thai bank has produced my account letter and statements in English, is this ok? I have a bank book showing all transactions over the year (Thai Language).

4. What is exactly needed on the house map, just a few roads and arrows or an exact map?

If you are not gonna work then retirement, which can be done immediately by the issuing officer. If marriage extension then it takes a while.

You do it where you live, it does not matter where you wife is registered.

Letters must be actual, maybe a day old no more, and the correct amount must be in the account, your account not joint.

I used the map on my condos website, but I have seen people drawing maps, just main roads and small bits of information like distances.

I use this for marriage extension

Suspect you will have to do it in bangkok (to converse to non-immigrant visa) and later do the extension where your wife is registered (or has a rental contract to show she is living there bangkok immigration might give the extension).

If you have 800,000 in the bank in Thailand or an income of 65,000 a month or a combination of yearly income and money in the bank together totaling 800,000 an extension based on retirement is possible and much easier. (But would not allow working in Thailand).

Thanks Beano.

Bit confused by yellow book, what's that?

In your list you didn't put bank letter. did you have one?

Yes we're all set up for visa based on the marriage, do you know what it is called.?

Ok, thanks but I may want it based on marriage, but what is it that I will be doing? a non imm 'O' or marriage visa. I'm a bit confused.

You are currently here on a tourist visa. So first you apply for a conversion to a non-immigrant visa for 2,000 baht. The conversion will give you 90 days in Thailand. During the last 30 days of those 90 days, you apply for a 1 year extension of stay.

For both conversion and extension of stay you will need to provide above mentioned documents.

It might be that you have insufficient day left to convert, in that case you can get a 60 day extension and after 30 days you apply for the conversion.

A yellow book is my house registration document, it is the same as a blue book but only for foreigners.

A bank letter not required for me as use the Income letter from the Embassy.

It is a non immigrant based on marriage, it is better known as an extension based on marriage to a Thai national.

Thanks for all the info. Very fast considering what got done in the space of a couple of hours. I had to first apply for a 30 day extension to my tourist visa as advised already on this post, then apply for Extension of Permission to Stay based on being Married to a Thai National as described above.

Only differences from lists given:

1. The map wasn't required, or at least wasn't photocopied.

2. The officer asked for a photocopy of the affirmation of freedom to marry.

I think it really is best to take the whole file of paperwork one has amassed start to finish and then let them decide what they want.

So, out of there by 2pm, even though I'd arrived just before the lunch break. And I have an appointment to return on the 10th. of next month.

What exactly did you do/pay? An extension of tourist visa would be 1,900 baht but a change to non immigrant visa entry would be 2,000 baht (and this is a requirement to extend for Thai wife). Why you would be returning in 15 days is also a mystery. Unless you only extended a short tourist permitted to stay to allow time to do the next step (change of status to non immigrant entry). Timeline should be:

Do conversion for new 90 day non immigrant stay. 2,000 baht fee.

After 60 days return to extend for one year. 1,900 baht fee.

After 30 days return for actual one year stamp after approval received.

I don't know because it is in Thai and the Mrs is asleep.

I paid 1900 for a visa extension, which was told was necessary because my tourist visa had less than 15 days to run.

That done I paid, 2000bt for what I assumed was an extension of stay based on marriage, but come to think of it I vaguely remember the phrase conversion to non-immigrant O.

I'll get the blue receipt translated.

There should be stamps in your passport with new permitted to stay written on them. It is clear now that you have obtained the 90 day tourist visa extension of stay. In 15 days it appears they will provide the 90 day non immigrant stay (which you already paid the 2k for)? Then after 60 days on that you will return for the one year extension of stay at a new 1,900 baht fee. Remember that the money must be in account for the required time for the one year extension of stay and all documents will have to be presented again.
