Australians Heading to Thailand Warned About Risk of Terrorism

CANBERRA, Dec 19 Asia Pulse - Australians heading to Thailand for the first anniversary of the Boxing Day tsunami have been warned of a possible terrorist attack.

Thailand is planning a major ceremony to mark the first anniversary of the tragedy that struck the country's south.

More than 220,000 people, including 26 Australians, died as deadly waves triggered by a massive undersea earthquake took their toll on 11 nations.

The majority of Australian deaths occurred in Thailand.

Thai authorities are planning interfaith memorial services for all the tsunami victims at several locations, including Khao Lak, Phang-nga, Phuket and Krabi on the island of Phi Phi.

They have invited foreign dignitaries, survivors and the families of tsunami victims to attend the ceremonies.

A spokeswoman from the Thai Embassy in Canberra was not immediately able to say how many Australians were expected to attend the commemoration.

Those who do travel to Thailand are being warned to exercise a high degree of caution because of the risk of terrorism.

In a special bulletin, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade warned Australians travelling to the ceremonies that there remained a high risk of a terrorist attack in Thailand.

"We continue to receive reports that terrorists are planning attacks against a range of targets, including places frequented by foreigners," DFAT said.

Australian authorities are keeping a close eye on the security situation during the tsunami events.

"The tsunami anniversary is a deeply significant event for people of all nationalities," DFAT said.

"Thai authorities will maintain a high level of security preparedness during the commemorations, which will also attract a large number of dignitaries and international visitors.

"The Australian government continues to closely monitor the security environment."

Indonesia is also planning a special ceremony on December 26 to mark the tsunami, which took a heavy toll on the province of Aceh.

Around 150,000 people are believed to have been killed in Indonesia alone and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will host the commemoration in Banda Aceh.

Prime Minister John Howard is on the guest list but new Indonesian ambassador Bill Farmer is expected to attend the ceremony as his representative.
