rice555
Hello All, even with the thunder storms, hail, rain and high winds that did a number on the mangos and iacks, the tome are coming along. Forgot to mention the heat, past 3 weeks we've had some low hundreds, now 101F. The two verities that are fruiting are Black Cherry and Yaqui, a Det. from the US I grew my last go round. rice555
Fapington
My tomatoes are an abysmal failure at the moment. The cherry types are doing ok, but any large tomato will not set fruit. Mortgage Lifter, Black Russians, Triple L Crop, will not set fruit. Between 40 plants, I have 1 catfaced fruit set. Very discouraging. I have ensured my nutrient levels are ideal, I can only surmise at this point that it is the heat preventing viable pollination. I have them shaded 60% to keep the intense sun off. Doesn't matter. I should mention that pollination is occuring, as I manually pollinate. The issue is the pollen is not viable for fertilization, so while a tiny tomato bud does form, it doesn't mature into anything. I've waiting 30+ days to see if they will grow past their tiny fruit stage, they don't. Edited July 9, 2014 by Fapington
tw25rw
Has anyone tried the Galapagos species? They are a separate wild species that have different tolerances to the domesticated varieties. I'm thinking of taking some seeds over for the gf to grow.
Fapington
I have not. They appear to be a kind of cherry though, should do fine.
rice555
Hello All, weren't the Glapagos tom's cross breed with other tom's, I read about the about 5-6 years ago, some work was done on them at U of O(or OR State) Corvallis OR. Also in Spain which I think were sold in GB as a type of Black Tom. I think that they have hit main stream home gardeners being sold as Indigo toms, I jus a few months back had some Indigo Apple from TGS in FL growing here. Higher in antecedents than blueberries. rice555
tw25rw
They have been cross-bred, but the true Galapagos tomatoes are a separate species endemic to the Galapagos islands.. They are like yellow cherry tomatoes and able to spread.left alone. They are also salt/drought and somewhat frost tolerant. jesuisbenjamin
Hey guys, nice thread of information, although a lot of info. I'm looking for beefsteak tomato seeds as well as many other seeds I will need later on. What's the place you'd recommend to buy seeds (preferably heirloom)? Thanks.
