Brooks Beans are just as good as Heinz or SPC....I used to buy SPC here all the time, have not seen them for a little while though...but we do not live in Bkk anymore either.

Brooks are available in Tesco.

Someone told me...not sure if true or not....but Brooks is made by the same company, or owned same same etc so the taste is the same, but cost a lot less....that would make sense.

I am having them tonight....my special blend....I cut up smoked cocktail sausages, cracked pepper and a splash of tobasco sauce and mix it all up in the pan....outstanding.

Brook actually do taste the same as heinze you can buy them anywhere in Pattaya also nice with some curry powder added,as for vegamite ,its just a poor immitation of marmite ,but then what can you expect when we sent our convicts to Australia they tried but just couldnt quite manage the same taste

Well, here are 2 of you posting that Brooks are as good as Heinz. I will definitely try them out and if they really are as good as you say, then you will have my gratitude.

Brooks do canned tomato juice, 26 Baht for 565ML and I prefer that to all the other brands available and that's not because it is probably the cheapest

Mind you the chef was excellent!

I'm amazed that this thread has mainly focused on baked beans, something so readily available in supermarkets. Don't you guys miss anything else? If I were an Australian I would long for things Australian like Moreton Bay bugs, WA crayfish, barramundi and if I were from Adelaide perhaps a pie floater; and your country has the best lamb in the world.....

I agree about beans not really something one need hanker for here, with their widespread availability, but to question you on the lamb, are you saying Aussie is better than New Zealand?

In a word yes; the best lamb I ever tasted was, believe it or not at the Gabba in the Brisbane Lions club. I was visiting my son and coincidentally his wife had gone back to the UK for a conference so we went there for lunch. The lamb was delectable and without the fat of NZ, Welsh, English and Scottish lamb.

It may be because grass in Australia is less succulent than elsewhere but I know that it tasted better - to me at least

I have bought mutton from an organic farm in Wales and it was amazing. I can't understand why mutton is no longer available except from specialist outlets, it beats lamb hands down for flavour.

Moreton bay bugs are here...just different name and about 5/700 per kilo from memory.

Crayfish is over rated....the bugs are much tastier than any crayfish or lobster.

Barramundi is available in plentiful supply...we have it regularly.

We have a freezer currently stocked with lamb chops and 2 legs....easily available and if you know where to shop...priced right too.

Pies available from 2 suppliers I know of and one sells a tub of mushy peas if that takes your fancy.

Vegemite a plenty.

I wasn't talking about availability, just my puzzlement that in a thread where the OP asked what people missed, the emphasis was on baked beans. I'm not Australian and only talked about things I enjoyed there.

I think that I was about the first to reply on the thread so if you look back you will see the absurd things that I miss and I don't believe they are available.

Same here, I just give up on beans until I tried what another poster mentioned by adding malt vinegar and a good dash of Tabasco to tighten them up. Never seen the light version mentioned nor Heinz.

I also gave up on milk a couple of years back. I seriously tried because I'm a massive tea drinker but I just couldn't continue so now I just make batches of ice lemon tea which is great if I wake up thirsty during the night.

The only thing that I really miss is Dutch style herrings with onion. Known as rollmop or Bismark in the UK. As usual my sister will pick me up from the airport when I return to the UK end of June. She will also, as usual bring along a pot of 2 herrings which I shall eat before leaving the arrival area. Then it will be off to her local for a couple of jars before dinner of you know what.... Beans on toast.

Using lamb instead of mutton ruins a good old Lancashire hotpot. I've managed to get a few people onto mutton the last three years or so with money being tight. Don't know what the price is now but middle of last year I bought a boned out shoulder for around 4 quid, plenty of fresh seasonal veg to go with it and it fed 6 people for well under a tenner. Don't even have to pay for the stock as it's made out of the bone with herbs from the garden. My elder sister comes to watch me cook now (when I'm in the UK). I think she realises that all those years as young kids when she was out playing but I was in the kitchen watching my mother or father cook paid off.

Despite all the wonderful fruits available in Thailand, they also exist here in Australia and one thing I always long for when I away is the good old Ozzie Apple or Pommie Coxs. Cant be doing with all the tasteless apples on the market.

Pretty sure there is no Villa on Samui but I thank you very much for the information. Cost is not really an issue but I'm not sure I am willing to go all the way to perhaps Surat for them. They are the Dutch syle ones I take it rather than the Swedish ones which are sweet?

Last time we were in Australia i bought kangaroo steaks about 3 kg.

Froze them wrapped them put em in a cooler bag and then in the suitcase and brought it back to Thailand.

Kangaroo was still cool when the motherlaw got it that night.

Next day everyone in the soi had kangaroo chilli .

Real Cheddar cheese from Cheddar doesn't form part of my diet these days but I can make do with the King of Cheeses, Stilton. Black Pudding is available but bottles of Dandelion and Burdock seem to have gone walkabout.

It's probably been said on the thread already, but you can get BB in makro. Well at least you could in my local branch. They introduced a foreign foods section about 6 months ago and they were on there. I think they probably just put everything imported on this section that was already in the store. The Spanish or Mexican looking brand (although probably Thai) are probably better than Heinz and reasonably priced.

Brooks beans are the best for a bean salad, good texture and better than Ayam brand...I wash off the sauce and then combine with a can of red kidneys and fresh cooked green beans or them french beans; mix with onion and garlic and extra virgin olive oil, salt, lotsa fresh ground pepper and lime juice in the fridge and then yer cookin'...good fer a couple of days of quick meals...

tutsi will prepare in his kitchen with the step daughter in attendance and observing...then, after refrigeration and the right combination of flavour I will say to the step daughter: 'here, have some...' and then she will turn up her nose, pro forma to indicate that all falang cuisine tastes like shit and then I say: 'you are a little thai food fascist that doesn't know shit...' and then she says: 'so what? whaddaya gonna do about it?...' she is 18 y.o. and an excellent thai cook, btw...

I'd have to say dairy products such as sour cream and cheese. Especially the bright yellow American cheese. The faded amber sandwich slices I find here taste more like cheddar. If I want cheddar, I'll buy a block of cheddar. I want American cheese, dammit!

As for baked beans, I've found the canned versions here to be too tomato-ish. Surprising, since the Thais seem to want most foods to be sweet. I always have to add some brown sugar or molasses to canned baked beans that I buy here.
