Taking Lcd Monitors Onto International Flights ?

I have a need to take four LCD monitors with me back to England.

Whilst I can transport a computer base unit (CPU) as hand luggage; I'm unsure about checking-in four LCD monitors with the airline, when I fly back to England.

The obvious answer would be to send them Thailand Post EMS... Cost B12,000. Seems a bit steep to me.

Oh yes... I do have the boxes and/or would be prepared to make some custom containers if I thought that it would keep them protected.

One thing I have read much about is theft if transiting via the Middle East (of course success stories aren't ranted about on the net like the stories of theft are!).

If anyone has any experience with such matters please reply.

I put a used 24in screen in my checked suitcase going the other way, along with all the innards (motherboard, power supply, proc, ram, cables, hard drive) of my desktop PC. All wrapped up in a few cheap towels. When I got here I just bought a new case and DVD drive for a total of about 1500Baht and rebuilt it. Perfect result and saved a fortune on high Thai parts prices.

I dont see the point of moving a case around as they take up a lot of space, weigh a lot and are very cheap to replace.

Four screens?

Be very careful about weight restrictions, any overage charges will make that B12,000 seem a pittance, which by the way is more than they're likely to cost brand new last time I walked around Pantip. And what if you're hit by duty at the other end?

Personally I think you'd be better off just getting what you can for here here, or maybe donating them to a school or temple that has one of those training programs for poor kids.

All that said, don't worry about theft, just wrap them up very securely in bubble wrap and duct tape and also surrounded by your clothes - obviously no bowling balls 8-)

Agree about the CPU as well - just take the mobo, cards and drives, rest is dirt cheap to assemble when you get there.

Remember to securely wipe any questionable materials before crossing borders, the definition of kiddie porn has gone amazingly wide over the years, even including cartoons without any live actors. . .

Yeah, I can understand dropping the case. Luckliy I managed to get a matx motherboard in an itx case.

Was you flight to Thailand direct, Darrel ?

In an ideal world, I'd simply check them onto the flight housed within their original boxes but as the cheapest flights transit various places I'd worry no end!

Also; someone could pick them up at the luggage carousel... No security for passager's belongings whilst all passengers do get subjected to stringent checks. Hmmm.

Believe me no one's going to steal your monitors, really, they wouldn't get more than a few quid from a fence. And if you've got cheap flights I can guarantee you'll be charged an arm and a leg for overweight, you probably can't take more than one!

Some things are cheaper her such as Asus m'boards and 1500W quad rail PSUs. 2 Nvidia SLI 450's cost me 12K Baht and would have cost more than double in the UK. Problem I have is keeping them cool!

Should add that I run a core 2 quad extreme overclocked to 37% to do video rendering. Beats an i7 hands down so a liquid cooled Ivy 8 core is my next upgrade.

in checked luggage i usualy put my tower in one suicase with a small monitor and i put my 30" in its own suitcase with a lot of clothes. No bubble wrap or anything.. Done it 10times with no issues.

No, there was plane change in Zurich.

My main reason for doing this was that I had all the parts and they were perfectly serviceable if a bit old. No point throwing them away in the UK (or selling them for a pittance) just to buy new here, especially as the new parts often dont have better spec than older parts, as mentioned already.

1 monitor = 4KG / long haul allowance = 25KG

25UK Fedex box to UK is about 5,000 Baht. This is what I use to send all my tech insured and packed very well. They will even pickup from your house.

That's good to know, Ian. Suppose you mean 25KG? That rate might be cheaper than airline's excess fees when flying anyhow.

Yeah if anything monitor technology seems stagnant and those 30" dells are still *really* expensive.

I also note that Samsung's newest, which superseed my present 1920x1080's, don't have VESA mounting holes in the back.

Another success story! ..I'm glad I started this thread because it's made me a bit more optimistic.

Cheers.

just sell in craigslist. what are the resolution and inch? brand?

Selling could be an option. Seems to me like second hand stuff is worth more in Thailand for some reason.

Samsung EX2220 Series 21.5" LED Professional Monitor, 1980x1080 HD, VGA & DVI-D inputs, Int. power supply, Tilt stand. 4 units.

btw: That's not an actual offer to sell!

Good specs. 47 quid here and you should get perhaps 130 in the UK. Just don't get done over by import duty bringing in 4. Good luck.

Surface post is very cheap, often arrives within 2 weeks, and one at a time less likely to get hit by import duties - keep your receipts so you can argue for second-hand basis for the assessment just in case. Maybe two that way and two in your bags is safest.

Yes definitely is if you find a buyer directly, not selling to the dealer. I've bought name brand 21" for a bit over B3,000 new, so I'd say you could possibly get 2k each, maybe a little more if you find a sucker.

I've found most IT stuff cheaper stateside, don't know why that's different for the UK.
