Yingluck asks for Prem's help

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra visits Privy Council president General Prem Tinsulanonda at his residence for the first time. Yingluck, accompanied by some Cabinet members, greeted Prem on the occasion of the Thai New Year.

PM Yingluck meets Prem, requests the permission of Privy Council chief to consult him on affairs of state

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra yesterday requested permission to consult Privy Council President Prem Tinsulanonda in the future on affairs of state, when the two met at Prem's residence, according to a Cabinet member.

The prime minister and her three deputies - Yongyuth Wichaidit, General Yuthasak Sasiprapha, and Kittiratt Na-Ranong - called on the elder statesman yesterday afternoon to offer good wishes for Songkran, the traditional Thai New Year.

Yingluck and her group arrived at Prem's Sisao Thewet residence at 3.25pm. They met Prem for about 15 minutes before the three deputy prime ministers left the reception room, allowing Prem and Yingluck to talk together.

Prem and Yingluck conversed for about half an hour before they rejoined the three deputies outside the house.

The elder statesman smiled while sending off his visitors, who left in the same vehicle for Government House.

A large number of reporters and cameramen gathered outside the compound, where about 100 policemen had been dispatched to keep the peace.

Before Yingluck's arrival, a man claiming to be a member of the "Democracy Lovers of Khon Kaen" protested outside the compound, holding a placard with a message calling for action over the deaths of 91 people killed during the 2010 unrest and riots. Police asked him to leave and there was no outbreak of violence.

At Government House after the visit, Yingluck brushed off a reporter's question on whether her meeting with Prem went well. She simply smiled and waved cheerfully to reporters while walking away.

Yongyuth, who is also leader of the ruling Pheu Thai Party, said Yingluck had told him she had offered more government assistance to Prem's charity projects, including those aimed at residents of the deep South.

"General Prem gave his blessing to the prime minister and wished her good health. He also asked her to take good care of the people," Yongyuth said.

He said the prime minister also asked Prem for permission to meet with him for future consultations as Prem was a senior respected figure in the country and a former prime minister with extensive political experience.

Yongyuth reiterated that Yingluck's meeting with Prem had no political significance. "There was only a cultural dimension, no political one," he said.

Seems to me upon reading the comments above that it is a classical case of, '' the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing.''

Yingluck is willing or wanting to meet again for, ''consultations.'' Yet Yonguth states that it is purely a cultural matter.

Would this suggest that the knowledge concerning the Thai cultural heritage is somewhat lacking in the Prime Minister or possibly that Yongyuth is being sidelined along with Chalerm who has been somewhat less vocal and rabid of late too ? .

The Very Merry month of May is approaching rapidly and the shop soiled tawdry politicians are about to burst upon the scene again.

No doubt that there are old scores to be settled regarding who sold who down the river., perchance that some of the current puppets are about to find themselves relegated to the props box due to the return of the aforementioned tainted clique.

Internal family squabbles are not unknown anywhere in this world, perhaps having tasted the fruits of power someone is trying to stave off a potential problem and a loss of face, hence the cosying up to the enemies of the Red Shirted P.T.P pawns.. foot soldiers is a self protective move ?

Fence mending. Good, I guess, but hardly front-page news. With all due respect, Ms Yingluck looks like she plasters on too much whitening cream and powder, and she could benefit from a few minutes in the sun. She's whiter than the white door at Prem's house.

That color is called beautiful here in Thailand......can't be white enough.

Healthy color is considered as ugly.

When I stay 1 week on the beach and just get a bit color my wife is shocked....What did I do and why do I look so ugly.....

She and Youngyuth are wearing pink the Kings Birthday Colors.

A very obvious reference to the whole royal postion in Thailand and Prems relationship to that postion.

You also quite clearly see the Kings Royal Badge on Prems shirt. Making sure his representation is seen.

It seems there is a concerted effort to re-ingratiate themselves, and distance themselves from the Red Menace.

Fence mending certainly, but regardless of denials, the symbolism displayed is quite culturally political.

One Amart clique bowing to another, in hopes of a return to the fold... all driven by Thaksin needing to

be brought in from the cold, anyway he can be. 'No face without acceptance', he finally realizes.

But what of the grumblings of the red multi-headed hydra that Thaksins incantations have caused to rise from the primordial ooze and slither across the land. Will it be consigned to the dustbin of history after a time, or is it too far entrenched and out of control? They clearly must be realizing they have been used. Their attempts at asserting influence in Chaing Mai is proof that they feel that an end-run around them is afoot. But outside observers have seen there was always an end-run coming their way once their usefulness was finished.

PM in pink to meet Prem signalling love

Deputy Prime Minister Yongyuth Wichaidit said he and two colleagues, Kittiratt Na Ranong and Yuthasak Sasiprapha, will join Yingluck in presenting garland, bouquet and fruit basket when they call on Prem.

"All of us will put on Thai silk dresses in pink to signal our love," he said.

*as a side note, Yongyuth did NOT put on a dress*

What you describe as a multi headed hydra would be seen by others quite differently, specifically the emergence of a political platform for ordinary working people entirely comparable with the emergence of the Independent Labour Party in the UK and its equivalents in other European countries. It does require some historical perspective to grasp this.Thaksin is of course just a catalyst and over time will become more marginal. The sight of Yingluck paying her respects to Prem can quite reasonably be seen by some reds as a betrayal, but it can hardly be unexpected given the compromises involved in power. At this stage all is in flux but remember it was not so long ago the usual suspects were arguing that the red movement had no reality beyond the needs of its paymaster. How fatuous and ignorant this seems now.

Without funding from the Shinawatra clan, would the Red Shirt movement have been as large and powerful? I'd doubt it, as the costs of their frequent and prominent activites would have been huge. Thaksin and his clan would have considered those costs as investments in marketing and social engineering. As long as Thaksin was funding it, it was all about him and his interests.

Whatever happened to Sombat's group? I'm thinking that they received no funding from Thaksin and were therefore sidelined. Without large funding in the future, the Red Shirts' power will decline.

Many Red Shirts who were hoping to move towards true democracy would now realize that they have simply been used for one man's greed for power. Their efforts had nothing to do with democracy, as Thaksin does not operate in a democratic way and seeks to hold onto power for as long as he can. Most of us here could see it for a long time, but it appears that the useful idiots are only realizing it now.

Again with respect you miss the point because like so many others you are obsessed with Thaksin. The real issue is Thaksin's catalytic effect namely that for his own agenda certainly he was at least partly responsible for letting the genie out of the bottle. The outcome is actually rather unpredictable and not necessarily at all one that will favour Thaksin's interests.Old patterns of deference are dying fast and the fairy tales are being questioned.Nothing unusual since it has happened before in many countries. My hunch is that the end result (but the endgame will be protracted and undisciplined) won't be too cataclysmic.Sino -Thai business interests will continue to dominate and the armed forces will retain political influence, but the working class and lower middle class majority will be the political driving force, and can no longer ignored and patronised.

They are being absolutely disingenuous in many of their statements in this article.

It is common knowledge that the color of love is Red.

I do find Thaksin intriguing, much like a villain in a fictional movie. It's not often nor everywhere that we are able to witness the actions and statements of an uncouth and corrupt megalomaniac and his henchmen in real life. But I am also aware of the bigger picture and of the power games with the old elites. I do give Thaksin some credit for awakening the masses of Thailand even though it was more for selfish purposes than for truly altruistic reasons. It was a turning point in history, so in the big and long-term picture, the awakening was a good thing. But in the short term, this awakening has allowed him to deceive the people enough for him to grab hold of power over Thailand, which is not good when considering his character and past behavior. My hope is that the majority ordinary people of Thailand realize that they have been deceived, and that in future, through their newly-found political awareness, they are not so easily deceived or bought, seek abolishment of patronage systems and draconian Lese Majeste laws, speak out against meddling by unelected elites, and seek much higher standards in the people whom they elevate into power.

Perhaps I wouldn't quite put it this way (but in a forum like this there will always be different perspectives). But your comments are perfectly fair and on essentials you say nothing with which I would disagree.

and with their discussion on the topic of culture being of such great importance that the need for secrecy was paramount...

Security was tight and members of the press from both local and foreign news agencies were barred from recording the meeting.

Wonderful step forward and definitely front-page worthy, I suspect most foreigners here don't realize how significant this kind of concession is.

If we could only hope that the opposition could put the country's interest ahead of their own pride in the same way, there might actually be some substantive steps toward reconciliation in coming months.

Not saying Thailand has ever been genuinely "unified", but the surface appearance as always here is paramount, and as with love, a reasonable facsimile will often satisfy for most purposes. . .

It's a positive sign, hopefully....I bet the hard line red shirts are loving this!

Interesting this meeting as many Red shirt supporters will be furious and left with a feeling of betrayal. They were so brainwashed in terms of Prem being the Devil and being responsible for their financial hardships, that it will take a complete decoding of their thinking. My wife translated night after night what, for example, the young Turks Nattawut and Jatuporn, said about Prem on the red shirts stages! Mostly lies of course, but the vulgarity and their choice of words were extremely insulting. My in laws, fervent red shirts, cannot believe what their princess Yingluck is doing now and their relative astonishment is maybe comparable as Obama heaving a cup of tea with Osama Bin Laden were he alive. For them Prem is the ultimate evil as preached through the red shirt tv stations!

Body language in Thailand is very important as signals and responses culturally.

The supplicants come to see Prem have definitely submissive demeanors.

Even to the point of maintaining a Semi-Wai position, with inclined heads,

clasped hands, eyes focused on him.

While Prem is completely up right and gesticulating with his hands, and looking away.

Arisman too.

:

Here is the video description:

Starts with a comment that Abhisit and Prem are intimate and ends by saying that Suthep's list of sensitive targets will be wiped off the face of Thailand if Redshirts are injured by government.

And what's your point? Obviously she is the lower-status between them according to Thai culture - female, younger, his being the monarchy's representative. . .

Nothing to do with anything but that.
