Usa Spec Frs Family Radio Service Handheld Radios To Use In Los

Featured Replies

Hi

I can buy used FRS radios for $1-$2 here at swap meets / yard sales etc

here are the specs of FRS radios

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Family_Radio_Service

I was wondering if they were "legal" or if anyone cared

I just thought it would be something fun for the kids to play with , i know I had fun with the older walkie talkie radios when I was a kid.

I never really liked these because once they became popular there were too many people on the same frequancy even when 14 channels, thats why they are cheap now :)

not legal in LOS. The FRS frequencies in the US are government/military frequencies here. You can buy the "red" radio's that security guards use almost anywhere, but I think you are technically supposed to be licensed.

On a general level

All radio transceivers used in LOS have to be type approved by the PTT

Imported units have to be submitted to the PTT for testing before being cleared by customs

As already mentioned the frequencies used by FRS are not allocated for public use

Use of FRS radios in LOS can result in arrest and appearance in court.

What about the Motorola handsets I bought in Tukcom for use on field trips in the boonies? These are original packaged from the US (even has 110v charger) but assume that they are 100% legal here.

I 'imported' some 45W VHF mobile radios way, way back and had one at the house and one each in of me and my buddies cars. Totally illegal as they were around 153MHz and high powered. I was stopped by the traffic cops for the usual 'stay in right lane too long' when coming back down the old Chonburi-Pattaya dual carriageway. This cop wanted a look in the trunk and I thought I may be in trouble when he saw this big radio in there. I told him it was 'for my work' so he assumed that I must be legal (not many farangs poot thai gaeng and have expensive new motor, Thai DL and VHF transceiver back then) or maybe the newest gogo bar owner so waved me on with a salute!

Do you hear any cross traffic when you use those radios in LOS ?

thanks BK

FYI both FRN and Zello repeaters to multiple bands are very popular in Thailand - just download the PC or smart phone clients and look for yourself. Samui, Krabi, Chang Mai are all FRN repeater hot spots.

With Zello from zello.com you do not need a FRM/CB/MURS radio - search the app store / play store / blackberry store for more details as you can use your smart phone to do it, and something we use here allot as we do not need to phone someone so all free and legal.
