Pattaya faces low risk from earthquake, tsunami

PATTAYA:--The Thai Meteorological Agency reassured Pattaya residents they have little to fear from earthquakes or tidal waves, even those like this month’s massive quake off Indonesia.

A temblor measuring 8.6 on the Richter scale struck Sumatra April 20, 20 miles offshore from Aceh Province, epicenter for the catastrophic Dec. 26, 2004 earthquake that spawned a tsunami that killed more than 7,000 people in Thailand and more than 230,000 in Asia.

and I suppose what he is saying is correct as regards tidal, as the big lumps of water that hit places are not caused by tidal action

Actually, there is. I posted a better fault line map in another thread but Rimmer told me I couldn't give geology lessons. I'm sure it's still there if he didn't delete it.

The image you linked is active fault lines, which means there is actual activity, however small, that currently takes place or has recently within whatever time span they consider recent. However, it does not show all fault lines. Like a volcano, some are active, some are not, but they are still there and can turn active at any time. There is a fault line that runs through the Gulf of Thailand, it just is not considered active. But that does not mean it can't be. Every time plates move it puts pressure on other plates, which is why Phuket is having quakes now, due to the recent Indonesian quakes.

The only wave that can hit Central Pattaya is the wave of garbage that comes down the Sois Khao Talo, Khao Noi, Nueng Pleb Waan and Siam Country CLub after a long and intensive shower.
