Am wondering if anyone has information on where it might be possible to hire a road bike in Bangkok and/or Pattaya/Jomtien area? I understand that some tour operators 'rent' bikes but from what I can gather you also have to book rather expensive guided tours with them. Any info much appreciated.

Are you after a bike or a scooter???

Do you want to go touring? or just ride around town?

From BKK, http://www.bangkokbikesrental.com/#BBR_SHOP.L/s0c/All although if you want to tour, you would be much better off flying to Chiang Mai and renting there...

As for renting in Pattaya, I can find no information on recommended shops, so you'll just have to do the best deal you can with the guys you find yourself...

I see rather large bikes for rent here. I think 400cc or so. Here's a few threads to research and contemplate:

I hear of accidents every week...and see them every week. Saw one yesterday. Be super careful. Thai drivers can be quite aggressive.

Bike = bicycle

I can't help you in BKK or Pattaya but I agree with the reply suggesting Chiang Mai. There are good quality road bikes for rent here, the riding is great, and there are plenty of people to ride with, both Thai and farang (let us know when you're coming, there's no need to take a fancy tour). Some of them even wear "Team Setanta" kit.

Why do people that cannot help the OP come on here and post about Chang Mai??... Weird!!wacko.png

Reminds me of the old story.....Where the boss put his apprentice to the shops to buy cigarettes, he said "if you cannot get Benson & Hedges, get something else" the apprentice came back with a Mars Bar!! Just weird!!!

Speaking of CM! Sorry, but it might be of interest to the OP:

Lots of road bikes for rent in Pattaya. The Soi's running off Beach Rd between Royal Garden Plaza and Walking St. are packed with rental agents.

Be sure to note every scratch and ding on the rental contract and take photos as a back up. Expect to be regularly stopped by police and relieved of B200-400 unless you have a valid Thai or genuine international motorcycle license. Whatever you do, don't give them a Koh Sarn Rd phoney...that will really cost you.

Apologies for the confusion..by road bike I meant bicycle i.e racing bicycle as in tour de france type etc. Thanks to those who have replied so far.

Well, Lenny, i can't speak for the others who posted about Chiang Mai, but since you posted 8 minutes after me, let me explain my "weirdness".

I knew the OP was asking about bicycles. (Read his other posts.)

All he was getting was replies about motorcycles.

Because he specifically stated he wanted a "road bike", I assumed he knew what he was talking about and I know how difficult it is to find someplace that rents quality road bikes in Thailand besides Chiang Mai.

Since the OP stated that he had more than one possible location (Bangkok or Pattaya), I hoped, for his sake, that he had a little more flexibility and would consider Chiang Mai since it more than meets his other requirements.

I also thought he'd like to know that there are other Setantas to ride with in CM.

And even if he couldn't change his plans for now, maybe he would find it useful to know that on a future trip there are plenty of riding opportunities in CM.

So, Lenny, how did your comment and "apprentice" story help?

Sorry, didn't realise that other farrang were stupid enough to ride in Thai heat...

I rented a couple of heavy, steel framed, Chinese mountain bikes from Probike http://www.probike.co.th/ ... not sure if they rent higher spec bikes, but you could ask...

Rode the bikes from BKK to Surat... Thailand is perfect for cycle touring... but then I started riding motorbikes because I am old and lazy???

Cheers,

Darryl
