Hi. I am looking to get a VoIP phone set up in the house i am renting in Samui. I have spent a day searching around computer shops and can't even find somewhere that sells them. Does anyone know of a company who will come and set one up for me? It needs to be fairly reasonably priced as i am not here for long enough to make investing a fortune worthwhile!

Thanks!

Voip , is a service provided by a company that you sign up with with, such as lingo, vonage or skype..

for that you need a fast internet connection.

If you have a fast internet connection, you call one of these companies, you sign up for one of their programs, they mail you a Voip router.you connect , your ethernet cable to your router internet, inlet, your telephone to the router telephone outlets,

you call your company's support number to make sure everything is connected properly, that you have a good internet connection, and that you wave the proper IP address. and you are good to go.

I Have Lingo, It cost me about $30 a month, unlimited calling world wide, including to cell phones, that some companies charge extra for. also for a small extra monthly charge you can make and receive telephone calls from your lop top.\, which is good if you are in a place where you dont have an ethernet connection but you have WFI

I understand that Skype has a similar service but I am not familiar with it.

you can also find a provider and install a smartphone like eyebeam on your computer and use a headset. no fuss no muss.

Using CAT CDMA i successfully used eyebeam on KPN for three month without a hitch. a 2mb connection is sufficient.

As my computer is generally on when i am home, i could receive calls no problem.

If i was out, i would receive a voice mail in my email inbox with attached recording.

the only problem i had was explaining the cicadas on conference calls.

You can also install voip/sip apps on iphones blackberries and android phones and connect via wireless, this way you are using hardware you already have.
