Yep, Ayutthaya's temples need $ 20 millions to be saved and no one does anything

Thailand has few real 'treasures'.... Phanomrung and Phimai, and not much else. The architecture of Ayuthya, Sukhothai, and Sri Satchanalai is nothing much to write home about. That said, it is Thai history... which few Thais seem to care much about.

Thai history borrowed from somewhere else.

Yes, Khmer history not to be confused with Thai history.

I have visited the main historical sites in the years, but for some reason Ayutthaya left me disappointed and rather cold about it.. Could it be that the memory of the Burmese defeat is still alive, and the Thai institutions don't pay much attention to its decaying ?

I love how Thai history is so intertwined with Khmer history and civilization. The Thai's look upon the Khmer (not without some reason 1975-79) as a bunch of thieving, black magic bush monkeys. Thailand would be nothing without it's neighbors to its West and East and in fact, there was a time when it was, pretty much nothing.

While I imgaine Ayutthaya was quite lovely in its day, it hardly inspires awe. I had read the floods had done some serious damage, which I am sure the article indirectly eludes to.

Thailand was never a country of great builders. There was no great civilization bullt within Thailand, is/was simply enjoying its day in the sun as the Burman and Khmer empires faded into the sunset.

Isanbirder: Those are Khmer temples
