go too central shopping centre in the basement where the car park is many pet shops there selling pets etc to the public

is it central airport? never seen before but would take alook, thanks!

there is a pet market with many shops, not far from the airport plaza. If on Hangdong road go straight past the intersection with airport central plaza on your left, There will be a row of shops on the left, and also a smaller plant market

Why not start a new thread, "Looking for a kitten"... or something like that, Ibet some members cats are about to "pop" soon, tis the season.

Much better idea and likely to be healthier as well.

Be careful there. Many are already sick when you buy them. IMHO that is not the best place to get a pet. A lot of those sellers are only out to make money and don't care about the animals they sell. I would do like the others said, put a thread on TV and I'm sure you will get better and healthier choices.

Edit: that may not be the place I am thinking of after re-reading tolstoy's directions. There is a similar place closer to Niyom Panich (soi across from them) that is what I am talking about.

I bought a poodle from this market at Hiya(sp?) Intersection (across from the crematoria and trash incendiary). He is healthy and happy now, but spent the first two months with us going back and forth to the Vet. You can find a good pet there, but you will probably have to spend a lot of time and money at the Vet.

Another idea who would the park of the south-west corner of the moat. Suan Buak Hat(sp?). Seems to be a dumping ground for Thai cats. There are always pregnant cats and new kittens running around. I'd be willing to bet that they are healthier than the animals.

Girlfriend bought a dog at the market, some chiahuahua mix. A day or so later it vomited and had blood in the stool. Had Parvovirus. She took it to a small local vet clinic the first day, but the virus did not yet show on the tests. Not very impressed with that clinic. Vets tried to save it after but couldnt.

This is a good idea, the cats at the park are very friendly, you may find some little ones. ask the toilet keepers, they live there.

Call Fon, 081-638-2105 (speaks Thai and English). She is the cat rescue lady in the area, has dozens that have been cared for and awaiting adoption. They will be current on vaccinations and neutered as well. Got ours from her and would highly recommend.

Is she the lady from the cat shelter in Doi Saket? I heard about this shelter but have never been there.

regretfully the Thais are not great animal lovers and the markets I come across are awful - caged dogs in baking heat - pitiful

Depends about which Thai you are talking.

Here are some Thai who show the direct opposite of what you just said, which also answers my own question above.

you know very, very well I was talking generally as I 'liked' the 'care for dogs' posting - there are wonderful exceptions to the rule but, Thais generally, do not look after animals just look at the 1000s of soi dogs and their appalling condition - hats off to the few who do care!

CMCC listserve often has adverts for free cats/pets as falang owners are leaving the country.... they are usually free of charge and perhaps (since they are westerners - here go the generalizations) they have been well cared for... worth a shot IMHO... it is where i would start if i was interested in a pet

You're still way off with the generalizations.... There are 70+ million Thais, how many soi dogs/ are actually let go by uncaring owners compared to dogs/cats that are well cared for? The reason that we see so many dogs/cats on the streets is that Thailand does not have a public service to catch/euthanize them as we do in many of our home countries. Basically, what you are seeing is that our home countries spend more money to hide their uncaring masses.

That`s a wonderful idea.

There are millions of stray kittens around that are desperate for homes and there are probaly members here that have kittens hoping to find them good homes.

Definately worth starting a new thread, in the market for homing a kitten.

I was reacting to what you wrote. I don't know 'very very well' as I haven't a clue who you are, and I didn't see your 'like' when I replied to your post.

But to be fair to you, there is a hidden agenda ... I have difficulty with people who are complaining about how bad 'the Thai ' care for their dogs and cats, while at the same time the shelter in our own countries are overfull. Don't know figures about western Europe but in the States MILLIONS of dogs are euthanized per year, because people 'luv them so much and take such good care of them'.

Not to mention the animal abuse that occurs (or 'occurred', hopefully. This year it was the first time they had 2 vets checking the dogs. And a few were kicked out due to too severe hereditary defects. among others, the best in show of the year before. ) at dog shows such as the world-famous Crufts.

And how about those dogs and cats in our countries that are so horribly fat, they can't walk anymore and hardly breath. Also THAT is animal abuse.

There are now laws in some states in America that makes undercover filming of the most appalling situations and abuse in large livestock factories a crime for which the ones, who wants to bring this into the open can, go to jail ... long term. For crying out loud!

France that wants more livestock factories, and thus much more suffering for the animals involved... by the thousands.

A Spanish king that thinks killing elephants is fun.

And then, bestiality. Read the other day a report on that. Too disgusting for words, and it occurs more than one may think.

It also goes indirect through the (very fast) destruction of the wild animals habitat, because we (westerners) still think having hard wood (such as teak) in our houses is so beautiful. If I remember well, Holland (where I come from) is nr. 3 on the list of consumers of hardwood.

That doesn't mean I condone the neglect and abuse of animals in Thailand, or think we should close our eyes because of what happens in our own countries.

I just have difficulties with the generalizations, as there are quite some Thai people who do care, and act accordingly.

well I hope you are strict vegetarian then? (I am over 30 years) and I am totally against animal abuse in all it's forms but I stand 100% behind what I said that Thais treat their animals, generally, appallingly as evidenced by the amount of soi dogs and the way they treat meat for eating (go look at the way they treat their cows and pigs etc.). I am against abuse everywhere but we are in Thailand, talking on a Thailand forum about Thailand so other wrongs do not make this abuse right.

with all due respect I cant believe the naivety and 'rose colored' glasses 'thais are perfect' approach - Thais dont care, generally, about animals and if you cant see that I give up! soi dogs are everywhere and usually very badly kept and mostly sick. Thais also consume tons of meat and Thais I have spoken to have NO CONCEPT about animal rights or why i am even concerned - there maybe some great exceptions but not many smile.png

Quite the opposite. I was pointing out that "they" as a generalization, are no different than "us". The real difference is that we come from countries that will pay to catch dogs/cats and take them to a holding center(pound) and maybe a step further and euthanize the animal. Thailand does not have this because many, if not most Thai's do not believe in killing animals( and its expensive).

BTW, I am an American by birth and pound for pound eat a lot more meat than the average Thai. I would guess the same to be true for a great majority of the posters on this forum. I think our concepts of animal rights differ quite a bit, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that all of your countries citizens are tree-huggers, zealots, etc. My suggestion is to stay away from the vast generalizations.

This just seems to be going right over your head...

We all understand that you love animals so much that you won't eat meat. That all well and good.

The issue I pointed out is that you have alienated 70+million Thai's to point out your dietary choices and then do the same to billions of Chinese to back it up. Then you substantiate it all by saying that it's funny?

Not funny if you care about people. If it helps, remember that people (including Thai's and Chinese) are animals too.

Please don't get a kitten from any of those pet shops. I have been around to take a look and I don't like the conditions the animals are kept it. I suspect they are also sourced form kitten and puppy mills rather then caring homes.

I have seen some kittens is bad shape, with fur loss, runny eyes, very skinny. Once place had the poor kittens and puppies out in the full hot sun, with no shade or water. I doubt they are vaccinated and the diseases they must come into contact with in these places will be many. Often they are kept is small cages, with many kittens cramped together. Not nice.

I got my cat from a cat rescue place in Doi Suked. Also kittens are usually easy to find if you just take a tour about you neighbourhood or ask your neighbours and friends. Many of their pet cat are not 'fixed'

and often have kittens. These cats will be in need a a good home too!

Why pay lots of money for a cat from a badly run pet shop, when you can give a good home to a kitten that will be much healthier and free (recommend you give owner a donation).

Good luck finding you kitten.

Back to assisting OP, I suggest that he/she google cat breeders in Thailand. It is very chancy to buy at common pet shops. Then once a kitten is in hand, the animal should be taken to a reliable veterinarian, such as Dr. Nok, for a complete check-up. An animal is a responsibility, not a toy.
