Bodindecha students turn to Prem for help

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Students and parents who are part of a demonstration against the Bodindecha School filed a petition with Privy Council President General Prem Tinsulanonda yesterday, asking him for help to get them back into school.

Protest leader Sombat Sorthanusak led some 50 students and parents to hand a letter over to Prem at Miracle Grand Hotel in Bangkok yesterday, asking for help to get the 220 students back into school and find a way to erase corruption.

The protestors also urged Education Minister Suchart Tadathamrongvej to ensure that the Mattayom 4 admission system is removed because it opens the door to corruption and is against the Constitution.

Prem, meanwhile, told the students to not lose heart and that he would do his best to resolve the problem. Deputy Prime Minister Yongyuth Wichaidit, who was also present, thanked Prem and promised to help the students.

Sombat said he was more confident about the students being allowed to return to class after meeting Prem, though he said that they would wait till Tuesday and if nothing is done, then they will continue protesting.

Visarut Kullabut, one of the protesters, said he was sorry that he allowed himself to get talked into joining the demonstration. Visarut, who was one of the 13 students allowed to register for enrolment yesterday, also apologised to the teachers and the director of the school.

Even education is wracked with corruption

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Thaivisa Connect App

Wasn't there someone from the current government that said corruption and buying of places at schools with bribes was a good thing?

I wonder if they still think that, as what we are seeing here would be the norm if that was accepted.

Every year, we would see hundreds or thousands of kids being thrown out of schools to make room for those paying bribes?

Is that really the best way?

Mr. Suchart, minister for education clearly thinks do. Must have worked for most of the cabinet and their ilk.

Visarut Kullabut, formerly one of the protesters, said "I'm all right Jack!" and went on to apologise to the school for having the temerity to protest.

I am curious..whats the bribe like to get into these schools ? 50,000 baht ?
