Obviously not a great footballing prospect if he chooses a club by the quality of extra-curricula activities available.

And we all chose Thailand for the career prospects.....haha!

ManU (yawn) IPO fails to score on Wall St.

By JAMES COVERT

Last Updated: 12:54 AM, August 11, 2012

The owners of Manchester United just got a swift kick to the shins.[\b]

Shares of the world-famous British soccer team flopped in their first day of trading on the New York Stock Exchange — a dizzying blow for the Miami-based Glazer family, whose ownership has been demonized by fans as greedy opportunists.

The shares, priced at $14 a share — well below the $16 to $20 a share range that the Glazers had hoped for — closed after their first day of trading at exactly that price: $14.

That gives ManU a market value of $2.3 billion.

Underwriters were forced to prop up the price amid slack demand, according to reports, an uneasy reminder of Facebook’s underwhelming May 17 debut.

Analysts blamed the poor debut, in part, on the Glazer family’s plan to pocket half the $234 million in proceeds from the initial public offering — despite the fact that they saddled the team with a crippling debt load when they acquired it in 2005.

Critics likewise bristled at ManU’s controversial dual-class share structure, which allows the Glazers — who also own the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers — to maintain almost total control over operations.

“I don’t see much in it for the outside investor who has no control,” Tim Jenkinson, a professor of finance at Oxford University’s Saïd Business School, told Reuters.

Indeed, ManU listed on the Big Board partly because the London Stock Exchange doesn’t permit dual-class share structures.

Some fans of the team — who in 2005 burned family patriarch Malcolm Glazer in effigy — cheered the busted IPO as they protested rising ticket prices and depleted funds to draft new players to support its cast of superstars like Wayne Rooney.

What's wrong with theses two statements,

The Glazer family got a swift kick to the shins

And then......

The Glazers to pocket half of the $234m.

Kick me in the shins anytime!

Just imagine if they got a swift kick to the <deleted>.

The real question is how on earth did they persuade idiots to buy shares in a company where there has been no dilution of ownership by the majority (sole?)shareholder, no ownership rights attaching to the shares acquired, no expectation of a dividend and half the proceeds do not go into the business.

I applaud the Glazer family cheek and their financial advisers acumen. I shake my head in disbelief at the financially unwashed who bought into it.

If Man U is an English limited liability company it would have needed an auditors certificate at the time of the initial acquisition that the company would be able to pay down its debts post the ownership transfer as they would fall due. That must have been a very close call with all the debt that landed on the company. Had the Glazers put forward their plan as to how they would squeak by to a UK auditor they would have been laughed at. [At least they would have had it been me - I used to do some of that work on big financial services acquisitions in my mid career]. But, last laugh to the Glazers - they pulled it off.

I wonder what else they have got up their sleeve. If they can keep printing money like this for themselves and their club you lot should do well - until the penny drops and it becomes impossible to continue doing that. No downsides to what the Glazers are doing that I can see, other than you wonder what other tricks they might pull that might explode in the cllubs faces.

No point in railing about the proceeds that got away into the Glazers pockets - celebrate the half proceeds that they have bamboozled investors into providing for club funds.

Here you go Jack.........

The Glazer family banked £75million from Manchester United’s controversial flotation on the New York Stock Exchange on Friday — up to £30m less than expected.

Avram and Joel Glazer rang the opening bell on Wall Street as 16.6 million shares, equal to 10 per cent of the club, were publicly traded.

However, the opening share price of £9 was lower than the £10-£13 initially proposed by the Glazers’ advisers.

At the top end, that would have allowed the American owners and United to split profits of £210m.

Instead, the flotation is expected to raise a total of around £150m, with half going to the Glazers.

It gives United an overall market value of £1.5billion, which falls short of the £1.8bn the owners were believed to have quoted Qatar Holdings when they enquired about buying the club last year.

The Glazers have been criticised for keeping half the proceeds of the Initial Public Offering themselves after initially indicating all the money would be used to help pay off United’s debts of £423m.

Doubts have also been cast over the class A shares on offer because they are said to give investors little in the way of voting rights.

One New York financial trader said: ‘Clearly, investors who are looking for a return as well as a shareholder voting right are steering clear. After opening positively, possibly caused by smaller retail investors looking to pick up a token share, the club’s share price slowly began to retrace and drop early gains.’

Having previously failed to gain sufficient support to sell shares on exchanges in Hong Kong and Singapore, United had delayed yesterday’s IPO.

Chief executive David Gill joined the Glazer brothers in applauding from a balcony at the New York Stock Exchange as shares in United were publicly traded for the first time in seven years while traders wore the team’s red kit.

Selling under the stock market ticker ‘Manu’, the share price rose before falling back to the opening £9 mark.

The news received a cautious welcome from the Manchester United Supporters’ Trust, who had called for a boycott of United’s sponsors in protest at the flotation.

Chief executive Duncan Drasdo said: ‘The experts say they don’t expect to see anything special in the first week because underwriters will be pedalling furiously to keep the price up, but they’ve suggested it could drop next week to £6 or lower.

‘Exactly the same thing happened with Facebook.

RVP set for Gunners run-out

Last Updated: Sun, 12 Aug 2012 12:20 - eatsleepsport

Robin van Persie will play at least 45 minutes for Arsenal when they take on Cologne despite reports he is about to join Man Utd.

United officials are working hard to seal a deal with the Gunners for the Dutchman and some reports over the last 24 hours have even claimed it is a done deal.

However that is not the case, as Holland coach Louis Van Gaal says the striker will play for Arsenal today before linking up with the rest of the squad on international duty.

"Robin will play his first game this Sunday," Van Gaal revealed. "He has told me he is at least going to play 45 minutes this weekend. It is a good job, because I almost had not selected him.

"This is the only time I'll pick Van Persie and Tottenham's Rafael van der Vaart while they are not fit. They have not played a single game yet for their clubs and normally I don't pick players then. In future I will only pick fit players. But van Persie is so important for the Dutch team."

Arsene Wenger is believed to be delighted with the player's attitude since returning to training and the striker is likely to retain the captain's armband, at least in the short term.

Man United promise 'world's top stars' will be bought with New York shares money

Manchester United fans have been told their club is in the market for the world's top players as a result of its listing on the New York stock exchange.

There had been fears that the £150 million the move is expected to raise would be either pocketed by the Glazer family or used to reduce the club's huge debt.

But chief executive David Gill has moved to allay those concerns, admitting the money is in place to attract world-class talent to Old Trafford.

Shares in United became available to traders for the first time yesterday and suffered a disappointing first day on the exchange, barely rising above the $14 at which they started.

But Mr Gill remains confident the Red Devils are heading in the right direction, noting the debt the club is saddled with has not affected its progress on the pitch since the Glazers took over.

'We fully understand and the owners fully understand that what happens on the pitch is crucial to us and we will make sure there are sufficient funds to invest in the team going forward,' he stated.

Mr Gill added that United have always had the funds to attract the best players in the world and they will continue to do so in the years ahead.

And if you believe that.................... clap2.gif

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson ready to increase offer for Robin van Persie

James Robson

August 13, 2012 -MEN

Sir Alex Ferguson is set to up his bid for Robin van Persie to £20m in an attempt to push through a deal before the start of the season.

The United manager has been at a deadlock with Arsenal over his move for the want-away striker, so far tabling an offer of £15m.

He hoped that would be enough to prise the Dutchman away from the Emirates Stadium given that he is out of contract at the end of the season. But Ferguson is aware that Arsene Wenger does not want to sell to a Premier League rival and would much rather do business with Juventus.

United are still banking on the belief that van Persie has set his heart on a switch to Old Trafford.

They have become frustrated with Arsenal’s negotiating tactics this summer, but believe an increased bid of £20m will be enough to convince them to sell.

The stand off has provided a fresh twist to one of the Premier League’s most enduring rivalries.

Ferguson and Wenger have clashed numerous times when United and Arsenal have battled it out for major honours, with the infamous ‘Pizzagate’ incident their most fiery altercation.

But out of that rivalry has grown a camaraderie in recent years as the intensity of their feud has calmed. That truce has looked fragile at times this summer as a result of Wenger’s reluctance to do business with United.

Ferguson was first angered when accusing Arsenal of releasing details of United’s initial bid for van Persie. And his frustration was close to boiling point last week when describing the difficulties of negotiating with the London club.

It appears that Arsenal are waiting for a mega offer from United before they will countenance letting their prize asset head to Old Trafford.

Ferguson is already prepared to break his self-imposed policy of not signing players over 28 in lodging a bid for the 29-year-old van Persie. He believes £15m is a fair price for a player who will be available for nothing in 12 months.

He would be willing to up that £20m, despite the fact that last season’s double footballer of the year will have little to no sell-on value. But it is highly unlikely he will exceed that figure – even for his top target.

Ferguson has been armed with cash to rebuild last year’s Premier League runners up, but he has already proven he won’t be held to ransom after baulking at the £35m Paris St Germain paid for another of his targets, Brazilian starlet Lucas Moura.

He may have to hope that van Persie himself pushes for a move to United having already informed Arsenal that he will not sign a new deal.

It is understood that Juventus have already been made aware that Old Trafford is his preferred destination and that United are leading the chase for his signature, despite interest from champions City as well.

Neither United nor Arsenal will want to see the biggest transfer saga of the summer drag on into the new season, which kicks off this weekend.

Ferguson has already faced disappointments in his pursuit of Eden Hazard and Moura – and he is determined to make van Persie his marquee signing.

He is also reassessing his targets following Moura’s last-minute switch to PSG when United thought they had secured a deal. Malaga winger Isco is one player who has crossed Ferguson’s radar, along with Colombian James Rodriguez.

Ferguson has made reinforcing his attack a priority since missing out on the title by goal difference. Shinji Kagawa has been recruited from Borussia Dortmund to play behind the striker, while his pursuits of Hazard, Moura and van Persie are evidence of his determination to add to his firepower.

But Sir Alex’s attack looked in fine form in his absence against Hannover 96 on Saturday night as United won 4-3 with Wayne Rooney scoring twice. Javier Hernandez and Shinji Kagawa also got on the scoresheet as United came back from 3-1 down.

Assistant Mike Phelan said: “We made a game of it because we gave a couple of sloppy goals away, which we shouldn’t be doing. But credit to the players – they came back, they showed a little bit of spirit at the end and it was a good victory.

“It’s important we score goals. We can’t go into a championship and be struggling finding the net.

“We have progressed in that department, but we have to look at it from the point of view of how disappointing it was to give the goals away in the first place.

“We look a team that can go forward and score goals, but we also look as though we can concede as well, and that’s not good.”

How Long Will Manchester United Have To Wait For Title Number 20 ?

Will number 20 be on it's way to Manchester United? Not quite, according to our predictions.

HITC Sport

Where will your side finish in 2012-13? With the season just one week away, our pundits have put our heads together to give you a comprehensive set of predictions.

Opinions and analysis on all 20 Premier League clubs are given here by 12 of our writers and pundits here at HITC Sport. On the basis of the predictions from our 'daring dozen' we have calculated how the table will look come next May.

How does it work? All the predictions are totalled together, the team with the lowest score will finish 1st, and the highest will finish 20th. Here are the predictions for your club.

Verdict- Manchester United will finish in: 2nd

Highest prediction: 1st , Lowest prediction: 4th.

Dan Coombs: 2nd; Each time United miss out on the Premier League title, they hit back big in the transfer market in an effort to recapture it. This hasn't happened this year, and the fundamental flaws which exist in their midfield still remain. Shinji Kagawa will need to settle quickly, but they look to be weak in both full-back positions, with no real cover for Patrice Evra. The squad still has enough to reach second and will have their moments, but first place looks unlikely with a confident City ready to kick on. However if they were to sign van Persie, their chances would increase.

Vic Daniels: 2nd; Falling short again, Sir Alex will call it a day after another 'almost' season that will seeing them losing out to their local rivals.

Mathew Nash: 1st; Star Player – Antonio Valencia.Top Goalscorer – Wayne Rooney. I think United will just have the edge this season. With the return of Vidic, continued development of Jones, Smalling and Evans, the signing of Kagawa and potential arrival of Van Persie I just feel they will pip Man City this time around in the race for the title. Their star player and top goalscorer should be Wayne Rooney if he can get fit in time for the new season, but if Antonio Valencia continues his end of season form he will be an absolute terror for defences this season. Their biggest challenge will be in the big games against Man City, who beat them twice last season on the way to the title and this season could be just as close so better results will be necessary.

Tomo Taka: 1st; Manchester United lost out only on goal difference last season due to an uncharacteristic collapse in the last few games. The young squad should learn from their experiences of the title run-in and in Shinji Kagawa they have a creative and guileful midfielder who will prove to be the difference from last season. A double Bundesliga title winner, his arrival could be the key in reclaiming the title from City. Best player will be Kagawa. United fans have sought a creative midfielder and in Kagawa they have a player with the ability to craft out goals for teammates and himself. Rooney will score close to 30 goals again this season – last season he scored 27 – but Kagawa with his contribution and goal scoring ability may well prove to be the difference in the points and goal difference tally at the end of the season. Biggest concern will be the goalkeeping position. David De Gea had an unconvincing start to the season but gradually improved throughout its course. Anders Lindegaard is however expected to push the Spaniard but United will want to avoid a goalkeeping controversy which will fill neither goalkeeper with much confidence. De Gea’s costly mistakes earlier on in the season could have been what cost United towards the end.

Jake Lane: 1st; Last season hurt, not only did Sir Alex Ferguson’s men throw it all away in the final weeks of the season but to you know who - takes the phrase “wounded animal” to the next level. If they manage to sign Robin van Persie and he performs as half as well as he did last season then they’ll be unstoppable.

Nigel Owen: 4th; The table flattered the red half of Manchester last season. City should have had the league tied up well before injury time on the final day, despite United's implosion in the final weeks. Chelsea and Arsenal were so far off the pace, they gifted the Reds a clear run at City. While Tom Cleverley was a big miss for them, and his return will strengthen a problem area for Fergie, they are still aging at the back and in midfield, and Rooney can't be expected to keep carrying the goal scoring burden on his own. 27 goals in 32 games was a phenomenal effort from him, with Hernandez the only other player to notch 10 league goals. It is odd for an Alex Ferguson side to have a lack of firepower, but if he doesn't manage to land Robin Van Persie, then he will need to move quickly to try to get more goals into his squad, but we all know about Van Persie's injury even if he does end up at Old Trafford. I don't see them dropping out of the top 4, but the noisy neighbours will have more to crow about, and the disgruntled of the Stretford End might become more vocal. It isn't original to identify Wayne Rooney as United's key man, but his goalscoring record last season was outstanding, and he won't be able to drop from that standard if United are to keep competing with the blue side of the city.

Surya Solanki: 3rd; Minimal transfer activities and team is heavily relying on two-three key players. Many players are injury-prone and inconsistent and the team looks relatively weak right now. Fergie should try hard to sign a left-back or a midfielder before the transfer season ends or face a season of possible failures.

Paul Moore: 1st; Sir Alex will be hurting after his neighbours beat him to the post last season. The player to watch is Wayne Rooney; he's coming into his prime. I still think the defence is their weak point. Welbeck and Rooney will click this season and score the goals that will seal the title.

John Aggrey: 3rd; Will end up third because; Just like Wenger, Manchester United always find a way to wrestle themselves to the top four despite the squad. So many people will concur with me this isn’t the greatest of Manchester sides and the squad isn’t just good enough to compete for the title anymore. Biggest Challenge; obviously it would be trying to wrestle the title from cross town rivals Manchester City.

Naveenan Thanendra: 1st; Although scarred by the last second title win by Manchester City last season, expect Manchester United to bounce back with a vengeance. While City enter the season as title favourites and biggest threats to United once again, Sir Alex Ferguson has shown his intention to strengthen via the transfer market to send his side back to the top. However, it will be the return of star man and captain, Nemanja Vidic that will prove to be the difference for United next year. His absence was far too clear last season, especially when taking on their cross town rivals, so expect Vidic to stamp his authority on the league next in 2012/13 in order to send Manchester United back to the pinnacle of English football.

Keval Shah: 2nd; As per usual Sir Alex has identified his targets over the summer and gone about bringing them to the club, in the form of Kagawa and Powell. If the club can sign RVP, they will certainly not be demonstrating the goal scoring form they have shown in pre-season. With club captain Vidic back from injury and no threat of losing any stellar names to rival clubs, I predict another close finish to the premier league once again.

Khiam Barry: 1st; With the return from injury of captain Nemanja Vidic and Danny Welbeck’s impressive showing at Euro 2012, and to seize back their Premiership title from their city rivals, United are my pick to win the league this season. Tom Cleverly will be a big player for United.

Connor Jipps:1st; United will be desperate to avenge City’s triumph last season and will be able to take much encouragement into the new season. All key players have remained at the club and Shinji Kagawa and Nick Powell will add much needed competition to the Red Devils midfield. Kagawa in particular comes with a particularly high pedigree, having become an integral part of the Borussia Dortmund midfield in his successful spell at the current German champions. Before Kagawa’s signing United were relying on Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick to run the midfield with little options behind. With Scholes turning 38 this season he has previously expressed how he struggles to play consecutive games and Kagawa will be able to take some of the burden off the United legend. Much will depend on Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic’s fitness this season, with Phil Jones flattering to deceive in his first season. Chris Smalling and Johnny Evans are both good players but are not of the same standard as Ferdinand and Vidic from United’s title winning sides. Injuries to the squad in the defensive positions crippled the side last year and United need to avoid them if they are to challenge the improved Chelsea side and consistently strong Man City. With such a close battle expected, it may come down to mentality and Ferguson has bounced back from disappointment time and time again by evoking the winning spirit amongst his players. With the new additions and the determination the side will have to regain the title they feel is rightly theirs, I think they could just go all the way.

Full predicted table: (1) Manchester City, (2) Manchester United, (3) Chelsea, (4) Arsenal, (5) Tottenham, (6) Liverpool, (7) Newcastle, (8) Everton, (9) Fulham, (10) Sunderland, (11) Aston Villa, (12) Stoke, (13) QPR, (14) Swansea, (15) West Ham, (16) West Brom, (17) Norwich, (18) Reading, (19) Wigan, (20) Southampton.

Where do you believe Manchester United will finish next season?

It's one I wasn't really in to if I'm honest mate....., he's injury prone, nearly 30 and, a bit of a bugger too. Redeeming factors being that he seems to have cut the issues and was bang on form last season, he's still nearly 30 though..!!

If he comes he'll get my full support but, if he doesn't I'll only wonder why we just didn't put in solid offers for younger strikers.., Lewandowski or Llorente.

My feeling is that he will arrive though, it seems he prefers us to City, or just paper talk..?

He's coming Red. Now we are in face saving mode for Arsene with us ponying up an extra 2k. Never a huge fan of him but will support him of course. We could use a little size in the middle up front and there is no denying his left foot ability. Must mean Berba is off to QPR or elsewhere for sure. This won't help DW's contract negotiations go any smoother - the arrival of RVP that is. I still think we have one more card to play before the window shuts. Everyone is saying LB.

Hopefully, will be a new signing before the weekend. RVP is going to be a protracted deal, but it may happen in the next 48 hours, just hope they bring in another defender and midfielder. James, not sure about Baines, that seems to have gone quiet. Looking forward to Monday night, got my ticket and a trip to Scouseland.

New striker though..........................

Angelo Henriquez Completes Medical Ahead Of United Move

7cantonas

Chilean striker Angelo Henriquez has completed a medical at Bridgewater Hospital ahead of a £4m transfer to Manchester United, claims Daily Mail journalist Matt Fortune.

The story was broken by Daily Mail journalist Matt Fortune with the original tweet, below, confirming stories from the Mail earlier in the day that United’s interest had intensified in the Universidad de Chile forward – United have a good working relationship with the club and amid reports that Manchester City were set to make a move for the player, Sir Alex has seemingly agreed to bring him to Old Trafford.

United had reportedly had an option to purchase the player for a number of years and decided to exercise it; he comes with a fine goalscoring pedigree, having scored 11 goals in 17 senior league games for his club.
