RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA (BNO NEWS) -- Authorities in Saudi Arabia on Thursday beheaded a Pakistani man convicted of smuggling heroin into the kingdom, the government said on Friday. It brings the number of people executed in Saudi Arabia so far this year to at least 31.

A statement from the Saudi Interior Ministry said the Pakistani national, who was only identified as Hussein Mohammad Sadiq, was beheaded on Thursday at an unspecified location in Riyadh province, which is also home to the capital which carries the same name.

Sadiq was arrested after he attempted to smuggle heroin into the kingdom, according to the ministry. The statement said Sadiq confessed to the crime and was sentenced to death by the General Court after being found guilty of drug trafficking. Other details about the case were not released by the government.

Thursday's execution came just a day after a Saudi national identified only as Nayef Al Sahimi was beheaded in the western city of Medina after being convicted of murder. Both the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court rejected his appeal and upheld the death sentence.

In January of this year, the United Nations (UN) expressed alarm over Saudi Arabia's increasing use of capital punishment. At least 79 people were executed in Saudi Arabia in 2011, a significant increase from the 27 executions reported in 2010. The actual figure is believed to be much higher.

Among those executed last year was Amina bint Abdul Halim bin Salem Nasser who was beheaded in the northern province of al-Jawf in December. She had been convicted of 'witchcraft and sorcery,' charges which are not defined as crimes in Saudi Arabia but have previously been used to prosecute people for exercising their right to freedom of speech or religion.

At least 31 people have been executed in Saudi Arabia so far this year.

How do you behead people these days? Do they have a proper Guillatine? Or use a blunt rusty knife and do it slowly, as per the many videos on Youtube during the Iraq conflict? Big sword?

Seems like there are many easier ways to do it, is there some religous significance?

Not commenting on the rights or wrongs of this, just a morbid interest in how they execute the executions......

My condolences to the family, friends and customers of the heroin trafficker who was so tragically taken away from us.

I haven't seen much reaction from the groups that have firm stands on the death penalty and tyranny, you know like protest marches in Trafalgar Sqaure, or demands to boycott etc. Fortunately, for Saudi Arabia, it's exciting tourist venues and export markets are safe. whistling.gif

That's right, a big sharp sword. It takes the head clean off or sometimes the executioner needs a second swing.

Saw a Pakistani drug smuggler executed in Jeddah many, many years ago. It was supposed to be a couple of Filippino missionaries scheduled for the chop but I don't konw what happened to them.
