The Continual Noise Of Barking And Howling Dogs - 24/7

After 10 years of living in Thailand, I have never had a situation where the soi dogs in my neighbourhood bark and howl continuously. Usually it's the occasional dog fight and barking. But now the dam_n mutts are kicking up a fuss literally 24/7!

My hotel guests do not appreciate this noise and nor do I. Me and my staff are running out of stones and I am running out of patience. If I had an air gun then there would be 10 fewer dogs than now...

Any suggestions how to stop them from howling day and night?

Simon

I have the same situation in my Moo Ban, so went to speak to the Amphur in Nong Prue, Chon Buri. They are going to get one of their people to take a look and if agree they are a nuisance will remove the dogs. Will also include household dogs that are also a real annoyance due to inconsiderate owners.

So in contradiction to falang Thai urban myth the Amphur will take action.

I sympathise totally, barking dogs can drive you crazy. I live in a relatively small village of 50 houses and recently a falang moved into a house about 6 down from me with five dogs! I can only sympathise with his next door neighbours because these yappy mutts just don't shut up. What never ceases to amaze me is that the cretins who own these dogs never seem to be bothered by the endless barking themselves. They seem to be able to sleep like babies when all the neighbours are kept awake all night. It's the owners that should be put down, not the dogs.

Where do you live? I have spoken to my Amphur (Nong Prue in Chon Buri) & they advised in the Moo Ban only one dog per household and if you complain will remove the additional dogs.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone has had any success with getting dogs removed. You may then have the problem of getting payback for your actions. I love dogs but unfortunately there are too many irresponsible owners who have no consideration for other people.

I live fairly close to the temple at the end of Nernplabwan.

I am aware of Thai payback & when I spoke to the Amphur I mentioned to them one Thai dog owner had previously pointed a gun at a falang when he complained to him. The guy at the Amphur said he will tell the Thai person if anything happens he will be reported to the police by the Amphur. TIT Thailand so don't know if true but just over the constant barking

OK do you or wife have the Blue/yellow household card? If so PM me & I'll give you the contact details for the person at the Amphur. You will need someone who speaks Thai

Identify the strays and get them lifted by the local animal welfare charity. I've forgotten the name but there is a legitimate one operating in Chiang Mai.

They collect strays and spay them, put down the sick, and try to rehome, ( without much success ), the others. The young lady I was talking to said that spaying the strays was already having a great effect in CM.

I've noticed a reduction of strays in CM in the past two years but the Chinese meat trade must have something to do with that too, anyway!!

Get the strays removed and you'll hear a difference, dogs are territorial and as soon as one is disturbed they all go up in a crescendo, but you know that already.

Every Thai knows the reason dogs howl. It is the presence of spirits blink.png . Start with mitigating the spirit presence and the dogs will calm down.

This valuable information was passed to me from a reliable source - My Thai mother-in-law, who, incidentally, has refused my apparently "stupid" idea of relocating the family bathroom to the rear of the property for easier family access because, in her words, "can you imagine how much the water bill will increase because of the extra water we will use?"

I own 2 dogs and i certainly don't like it when they bark. But they are dogs and will bark at times. It is anoying when all the dogs in the village are starting to bark together because something is up. But last time that happened we caught a burglar because of it. (not our property somewhere else).

Dogs will be dogs get used to i t (occasional barking not the 24/h kind)

I don't think anyone is complaining about dogs "that occasionally bark", you'd certainly expect your dog to bark if there was a stranger on your property. It's dogs that bark out of sheer boredom or when a leaf falls from a tree that we're talking about.

Agreed, just stating that dogs usually bark when something out of the ordinary is happening. I would not put up with 24/h of barking. Then again Thailand is not the most quiet place and people in general don't really care that much about sounds. (early construction / karaoke ect)

This post is about incessant dog barking - also depends on whether the occasional barking actually means barking sessions during the night - personally I will not "get used to it", that is the usual uncaring response from dog owners.

In Phuket the dog charities definitely will not remove Soi dogs unless they are sick or injured. These dogs are barking all the time because there are 2 opposing packs who occupy ground about 300 metres apart - the middle ground where they decide to fight is opposite my hotel entrance!

Right now, me and my staff throw stones at the dogs whenever they approach the hotel. (We haven't hit any of the mutts but perhaps they will learn a-la-Pavlov not to come near our property).

As others have said, barking is acceptable (in Thailand), but not 2 packs of howling mutts all day and especially at night.

I had to remove a post suggesting violence to dogs. Please, don't post suggestions such as this. It's inappropriate.

As an FYI, I have a friend who lives near the beach in Jomtien. His condo manager calls a guy who comes out with a blow gun and stuns the dogs, then moves them over to a shelter. They pay 2000B per visit for this service. He says it works great.

Cry me a river, dogs will bark even at night. I don't like it it happens. People are allowed to keep pets. There you have it. I also don't like it when my neighbors have party at night. But people hold parties i accept it. If you want complete silent you will have to move to a place without people.

Simon, your situation is totally not acceptable. I agree there and it will probably not change easy. Your stone throwing might help it might not. I wonder if you can relocate them yourself.

For those who miss Songkran and wished they could play with big guns all day, well now's the chance to dig up that high pressure super duper rocket propelled rocket water cannon and go do some pretend big game hunting. Don't forget the safari suit!biggrin.png

Usually, most of the barking is to do with the new bitch on heat and the males are fighting for first honours. So aim and scare away the bitch and you might get a few hours rest. Shoot at the males too if you want to for fun, it's just a water gun.

If dogs bark at night, it's either because they are strays or have owners who aren't handling them properly. If you're out in the middle of nowhere, great! Let'em bark. If you have neighbors, it's very rude. And yes, I'm a dog owner and lover. I would never let my dog bark all night and disturb my neighbors.

I would never let my dogs bark all night either (could not sleep myself too). But if someone is making noises near my home or doing something funny my dogs will bark. That wont be all night will be for a short time.

People expecting silence are crazy when many people live together there always will be noise. Be it dogs or music from a party. Someone waking up early to go to work and starting his car loudly.

This is the kind of response you get from irresponsible dog owners. I own a dog, it barks, get used to it. No one has suggested complete silence, but if you have an incessant barking dog it's your responsibility, not for your neighbours to uproot and move somewhere else. If someone has a party a couple of times a month I'd put up with it, but if it was every night, different story.
