Royal decree announced for parliamentary recess

Hotnews-255506170006.jpg

BANGKOK, 17 June 2012 (NNT) - A royal decree has been issued for the closure of the legislative ordinary session of Parliament on June 19.

The current parliamentary session has been extended from April 18 at the government’s request that there are many bills pending deliberation by the House and Senate.

Parliament President Somsak Kiatsuranon affirmed he has no plan to call a joint sitting of both Houses to deliberate the third reading of the constitution amendment bill on June 18 as no contacts have been made by government whips. The Parliament will open again on August 1 for the general ordinary session.

Mr. Somsak also asked that during the Parliament’s recess, all sides should take one step back and turn to each other for talks to reduce confrontations due to conflicts of opinion. He reaffirmed that there was no rift in the Pheu Thai Party, but only difference of opinion remains.

Maybe they should close until 2015

Why do you say that? Does this have anything to do with the AEC? Just wondering, since that's when the AEC is supposed to come into full effect.

Thank God me and my family will be out of the country by then. I mean would you want to be around when Thais are losing more jobs to foreigners?

I was just being facetious. The term of this government will expire in 2015

I'm going to miss the evening news video clips showing the periodic Parliament food fights, finger pointing, paper throwing, chair wrestling, name calling, etc. But mabye the news will show some reruns of Parliment's Funniest Videos until some new videos become available on 1 Aug.

ASEAN has no enforcement mechanisms, so you can essentially change the wording of a law to appear in line with agreements like the AEC when in actuality it's business as usual. Or, as is likely in Thailand's case, just refuse to enforce any of the agreed upon provisions on the ground. See this article: http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Southeast_Asia/FG07Ae06.html. It makes for good critical reading regarding the way things are done in Thailand. This is from 2004. For all intensive purposes, things have probably not improved and if anything, they've gotten worse (corruption-wise). I wouldn't worry about the AEC too much. Thailand has a way of just ignoring massive problems that are just begging to be dealt with. Things never seem to change too much. Though I do expect xenophobia to become increasingly apparent as a result of the AEC.

For good might better

Maybe they should close until 2015

than this government would go in the book of history as the best government Thailand ever had. But I worry it won't happen.

Thailand is safe for another few months. Just like most countries will be when their government recesses.
