starcandle Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 Went to the Carabao concert in Plailam last night, I went as it was partly for charity and some of the takings went to the school in Plailam. Could not believe how good it was, after ariving a little early the half dozen of us (farangs) made our way over to the alcohol sales, 40 baht for a cold beer and 50 baht for vodka coke, how good is that ! well that set the mood and once the band started initially it was a little tame, but within half an hour EVERYONE was dancing about smiling and having a great time. My Mrs went with a negative attitude, but came away saying it was one of her best nights on Samui, Brilliant night, well organised, well recieved and when is the next one ?
Tropicalevo Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 So that's what the noise was? I could hear it (just) from my place. No complaints from me. I wish that I had known. I never saw that one advertised. If you hear of another - please let us know.
robsamui Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 What? Carabao here again? This whole thing continues to depress me - the Thai community that simply doesn't acknowledge or include the presence of foreigners. No promotion or advertising in English (or was there - I didn't see any . . . I would have gone ). It's all so strange. TOT would increase its profits by 20% overnight if only it included copies of promotions in English, too. The same goes for UBC, Makro - every single business we get free leaflets and fliers from. All in Thai. Why won't they do this? And don't reply with stuff like "it's their country". Many Thai restaurants are aware enough to have menus in English - Russian, too, now. When it comes to individuals then it seems there's an occasional commercial awareness there. But when it comes to Thai communities, then it's almost like losing group face to be seen to lower themselves to include farangs. It's the same with smaller groups of people, too. When I'm one-on-one with a Thai then they'll happily refer to me by name. But the same people, if a part of a group, won't say "Rob did this" or 'Rob went there" it's always "farang did this". And then, to add an utterly lunatic element to the mix, every Thai publication has all the headlines in English! How many times have I picked up a magazine - then seen all the Thai script under the mass of English captions! What a curious country! R
Rooo Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 It would be nice in future, if someone knows of upcoming events, to let us know. 2
insertmembernamehere Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 I was pretty upset when I was hanging out with one of my Thai tattoo guys and about the time I was going home he mentioned the concert ("Yeah...they are in Samui and charging 300 BAHT!! They used to play free but now they think they're big people...they sell themselves for an energy drink [for example]." It was already too late for me to go and find the place and I was in no condition for a journey so I was miffed that I had not heard anything of this. I find it amazing that no one associated with Thaivisa -- nationwide -- had no idea this was going to happen and if they did, didn't bother to post it. How many big acts does Samui get? You'd think someone would be in tune with this side of Thai life. And agreed, I neither saw nor heard of this beforehand, either in English or Thai. I have to say that if no one on Thaivisa was aware of this then it really speaks volumes about the blinkered life we must lead here....
Leckyman Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 Almost all of the expats i know knew of this concert, most had tickets, (200 Baht) a pop. There have been vans going around for ages advertising the event also.

They could be saying 'free beer and free sex' for all I know.
limbos Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 Samui gets a lot of famous acts, about two months ago Pong Laang Sai On performed at Wat Plai Laem with a fantastic show and many Thai Look Thuung 'superstars' play on a regular base on Samui. The Carabao concert had posters (in Thai) allover the place, small ones, but they were there. A lot of times I post about these events on my Samui info and weather blog, maybe keep an eye out there.

There have been vans going around for ages advertising the event also. The only place I saw any trucks was in Big Budha and they were in Thai. I was lucky, I along with about 15 others got our tickets free of charge, the gaffer at the Premier Bar in Bangrak purchased a couple of books of tickets and gave them away to his customers. To be honest you would not have got many more people on that fottball field, so if it was advertised better they would need a bigger venue.

Im going to see them on mainland on july 1st, 100 baht per ticket, must be down to who organises the gig to what gets charged, 300 bit steep for Thai people.
