Let's say having got the retirement visa how would I go about having 6-7 months in Thailand and 5-6 months in the UK working ( because you have to do 90 day reporting right? ) as full time retirement in Thailand at 57 would leave me in vegetitive state. Plus, if I wanted to do that, I mean the 6 on 6 off my passport would be full of Thai visa and border runs stamps in no time plus Hull may refuse a triple entry at some stage.

Thanks.

You donot have to do 90 day reports while out of the country. Get a re-entry visa when you get your extension of stay. Also take a trip thru this thread all of your questions will be answered.

rolleyes.gif Normally when on a retirement extension of a Non immigrant O visa...(which it actually is...a yearly extension of your visa by reason of retirement in Thailand)....if you exit the country you first from immigration purchase an exit and rentry permit; which on exit stops the 90 day reporting clock until you re-enter Thailand when the 90 day reporting clock is restarted.

I know this process works on a 30 day absence from Thailand...because I've done that myself.

What I'm NOT sure about is if a stay of 6 months out of Thailand would be possible with a exit re-entry permit....because possibly that re-entry permit would actually only be valid for that 90 day reporting period it was issued in.

Maybe one of the more expirenced people on this topic can answer that question, because the longest I have actually been out of the country with an exit re-entry permit was a 30 day period.

P.S. I'm 66 years of age, permanently 'retired" in Bangkok, and hopefully not yet in a vegitative state yet.

Re entry permits are issued for the duration of stay permitted in the extension or visa. If your permission to stay expires in 10 months the re-entry permit will too.

It is a very good idea to always get at least one re-entry permit when extending the stay. If you have to leave the country urgently without one you will have to go through the whole process again.

A retirement extension of stay may be from something other than a non immigrant O visa - it is an extension of your stay not of your visa.

There is no requirement for an exit permit from Thailand - that was only required for a short period several decades ago. You are always allowed to exit if not being held for legal reasons. What is required to continue current stay is a re-entry permit to be used for return and continue stay. You can stay out until the day before your expiration of stay (re-entry permit date) if you wish. It has nothing to do with 90 day reporting. Once you depart Thailand you are not here so no reports are required - when you return that will be day one of a new stay in Thailand.

You may not be in a vegataive state yet, but you are wrong in at least a couple of statements. The extension is for your period of stay, not the visa, The 90 day report is an address report for people staying in Thailand longer than 90 days, it has nothing to do with permission to stay. Also, the re-entry permit maintains the validity of the permission to stay date, doesn't make any difference if it's one day, month, or year.

The key thing is to make sure that you'll be in Thailand during the 30 day period (at some time) prior to the expiration of your permission to stay (i.e. what most people call "renewel of retirement visa"). That's the timeframe every year for doing your next 12-month extension of permission to remain due to retirement.

If the timing isn't convenient, then perhaps you need to consider leaving the Kingdom and re-entering with 30-day visa exempt status and then getting that converted to a 90-day O visa (possible in CM and BKK, maybe not in the provinces) and then extending that 90 day O visa for 365 days due to retirement.

Oh, and about vegetating during retirment -- I've got to say this is the most productive period of my life. I can pick and choose how I spend my time and indulge interests I had as a youth but couldn't afford. Hubbys says my home-cooking has never been better because I now have the time to spend in proper shopping and meal prep. I've lost weight and am more fit, due to the work-out facilities within steps of our front door. I've never had so many friends.

I'm sorry, but my lady friends and me just don't understand the guys who say "they're not ready for retirement". We all wish we could have done it years ago!
