Supersonic Aircraft Screaming Overhead (Don Mueang Area)

This has been happening off and on for several weeks now. Does anybody know why? I assume that somebody needs to get somewhere, and fast. But they scream past again and again, perhaps half a dozen times within 30 minutes or so, sonic boom and all. The ground vibrates and windows rattle.

And what is worse, some of them have that falling-pitch whistle reminiscent of the

. The first time I heard it a few months ago, I was certain bombs were falling. It's quite a terrifying sound. Is the RTAF trying to strike fear into the hearts of its own citizens?

The whole thing smacks of Soviet style military parades, but up in the air instead of on the ground. Anyone have any guesses as to what's going on?

It's probably the RTAF testing out the new Gryphon's that they have recently taken delivery of.

We had the same thing over Koh Samui a couple of weeks back. Looks like they have moved up your way - good luck, we're glad to get rid of them. whistling.gif

It is an airforce training area.

Training over the capital city... really? You'd think they could spend an extra 20 seconds and fly out to the countryside before playing Top Gun. Seems ridiculous in the extreme to have military exercises - training ones at that - happening over densely populated areas.

They have all of gulf of Thailand to play in, so they decide to do it over Koh Samui.

Where is the glory in being a flight ace if no girls can see you.

I've seen what looked like a pair of F-16s fly overhead here in Nonthaburi a few times in the past week. I can't say it bothers me much. It kinda gets the blood pumping. I used to live near a Navy base when I was younger and there were F15s, F18s, and A-10s overhead all the time as well as slow moving C-130s that looked like they would fall out of the sky. The real fun was before the annual airshow where I'd get to see the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds practice a few days before the show.

Harrry is correct. Ubon has the same stuff WHICH wakes me up at 9am a couple of times a week. smile.png

Fighter jets zipping about and US drones soon to be taking off by the dozen from U-Tapao, Thailand is quite safe from a Chinese invasion for the present.

There are no drones "by the dozen" planned for U-Tapao. Here is the aircraft list for the NASA mission. Put away the tin foil.

From: http://espo.nasa.gov/missions/seac4rs - "The NASA DC-8 will provide observations from near the surface to 12 km, and the NASA ER-2 will provide high altitude observations reaching into the lower stratosphere as well as important remote sensing observations connecting satellites with observations from lower flying aircraft and surface sites. A critical third aircraft needed to sample convective outflow and slow ascent of air above the main convective outflow level (~12 km) has been identified as the NSF/NCAR GV (HIAPER)."

http://www.eol.ucar.edu/instrumentation/aircraft/G-V/ This is the G-V (HIAPER), a Gulfstream V aircraft.

The project data collection is only running from August to September during monsoon season.

I think U-Tapao was selected as having a lot of empty parking space, close to the ocean and away from general BKK population and air pollution.

The DC-8 probably needs more takeoff runway than the ER-2. At low altitudes the ER-2 will jump off the runway and climb very fast.

U-Tapao environmental flights were not drones. They were the U-2 variants now called TR or ER I think that NASA uses for environmental research. however, U-tapao would be a good candidate for Global Hawk types of Drones

There is a big air show this weekend at Don Muang so I imagine they are practicing for it. Its the 100th anniversary of Thai aviation. In 1912 the Thai military sent men to France to train as pilots and the Thai Air Force was formed on their return. So they will be having a big air show to commemorate. The Don Muang area will probably be a traffic nightmare so you're lucky if you can see it where you live

Is there a website with details? I love airshows.

From memory the only people who saw the last one were the ones stuck in the traffic jam on the DM freeway.

Well for the record, I heard no airshow. There were perhaps two single fly-overs that (once again) made me want to duck & cover, but that was all.

And these aircraft are always flying quite low. I mean news channel helicopter low.

Does anyone have any idea what time the air show will start today?

I would like to take my kid who loves plane.

nice excuse....you mean YOU do not want to go.

We heard these planes as well out in Khannayao. Not far from DMX.

However, some days there are a lot of helicopter flights passing. Can get a bit unnerving.
