Hi all, i was wondering if there would be enough people on here that are interested in Hydroponics to have a Subforum on this subject and if so how is this achieved

Thanks

If anyone would like to see a sub-forum for above subjects please post here so we gauge support.

I think this is an excellent idea. Pigs 101 has proved that people who are investing or just interested in pigs have a place to share and seek information. Some of the longest contributing members on the Farming Forum have a wealth of knowledge on fish raising and more and more are getting interested. I for one would love to learn more.

Hydroponics is not something that I am interested in doing at the moment, but it is a very interesting topic. There may come a time that I will want to try this and if all the info is there in a dedicated sub-forum, that would be great.

A sub-forum for such a specialised area as hydroponics is an excellent idea in my opinion.

There certainly used to be quite a lot of hydroponics activity in this forum, sadly it seems to have died out :(

Hydroponics, aquaculture and aquaponics (combining the two) should be an interesting mix.

Anyone else??

Perhaps someone doing hydro would like to start a new thread.

Add me to the list of "eyes to the right" as it were

But i must say, there doesn't seem to be an awful lot of interest in either this thread or of others similar

Hope that wont prevent the opening of a sub forum thoughclap2.gif

To me the common thread is the water, farming a body of water. Be it pond, puddle, or concrete tank with vegetables or fish. It is about establishing and maintaining the water condition such that plants and fish can grow. Integrating the two means you are "jumping in" in a bit higher off the diving tower. The high divers are those silly buggers like me that dream about adding pigs, ducks, and feed manufacture to the water system and jump off the top.

Seriously, integrated farming is the future, successful monocropping is very limited and lets face it not sustainable economically for more than a simply Thai lifestyle.

Pinned topics may be more appropriate to maintain focus on the individual topics. But I would suggest that some form of catalogueing system of folders would give people looking for information more direct access. For instance waste management is discussed in pigs101 but I doubt too may people would go looking there for it if they wanted to treat waste water from a fish pond.

Our subforum smallholding etc.. was a good idea whilst someome was driving it and people were finding it hard to find quality organics information.

I suppose I am suggesting two things. Firstly the common threads in farming water deserve to be collated under some interest grouping. Secondly that perhaps the moderators should look at the overall structure, perhaps some form of keyword cataloguing ?

Well it seems there maybe enough interest and i am sure it would become more popular as time goes by, personaly i am involved in Hydroponics so i would like to share knowledge with others on the forum and learn about the other water forms, crossy what do you mean by a new thread? sorry to be so dumb, is that the same as a pinned thread?

Cheers

Add me to the list. I have been involved in hydroponics and aquaponics for a while and am just about to set up a new hybrid hydroponics system.

(and yes, that DOES exist!)

+1 although I wonder if e.g. we should separate hydroponics/aquaculture from aquaponics as there is a very specific relationship between the fish and growbeds in the latter, I guess it depends on how many people will be posting re. the different subjects.

I agree, as it seems that there are 2 distinct camps/trains of thoughts forming already

There is already a pinned section on Aquaculture/Aquaponics under the Small Holding and Kitchen Gardening sub forum of the Farming in Thailand forum.

REALLY?

What can we grow this way ?

All and anything that grows in a dirt garden can be grown either using aquaponics, and if aquaponics cant, then hydroponics can.

Ive actualy seen fruit bearing trees growing in an aquaponic growbed, for instance.

I admit ... I rarely travel there ... up to that section.

I only inquired about a subforum on Hydroponics, considering that there is already a pinned section on aquaculture/aquaponics i think hydroponics should stand alone because of the vast difference in the two, this is only my opinion of course,

ok , my biggest query is where can the equipment for the aquaponics system be purchased in Thailand ? excluding tanks, i think that can be sorted easily enough ... i have found many good suppliers in Australia but of course prefer to purchase here ...
