You guys are real tools and should get out of the country...based upon your lack of acceptance of cultural differences between Thailand and your own home country. If you are complaining about foreigners being targeted by random drug tests, you're morons. First off, foreigners are guests of this country that are expected to comply with the statuatory laws and cultural morals of Thailand and if not, be ready to be asked to leave the country quite quickly. Secondly, why would anyone with any sense or intelligence expect the IMMIGRATION police to randomly check Thais? IMMIGRATION POLICE, doesn't that light the light bulb in your heads, no matter how dim it might be? Lastly, if you aren't doing anything wrong, then you have nothing to worry about for the most part. No culture or country is perfect and if you're going to whine and complain about such an insignificant event, get the hell back to your own country and leave this relative paradise to the appreciative and respectful visitors and expats. By the way, someone please post back if they start testing foreigners at the Sunday Buffet at one of the big local hotels. I'm not too worried about getting tested in an area like Soi 3 because I avoid those areas during "peak hours" anyways.

In Pattaya, clubs get raided frequently and foreigners are always escorted out prior to tests taking place.

Good point, Although I would say why not target Thais? That is the principle for me. Surely we are not saying that immigration police only police crimes committed by foreigners !! If an immigration policeman sees a Thai robbing a 7/11 he wouldn't just ignore it because he is immigration police.

My follow on from that would be why are immigration police going out to check for drugs and not just normal police anyway.

I would think this was actually aimed at targeting foreigners overstaying, without documents etc. and some bright spark came up with the additional idea of drugs testing. I doubt that it's in immigration's brief to just go out and do drug tests so they'd need another reason to pull someone up first - and they wouldn't test any Thais. Though if they knew a Thai was carrying drugs I'm sure they'd do something.

Well maybe you should visit Viet Nam before you comment. My Thai wife and I have been in the tour business since 1973, employ 9 Thai's with a combined payroll of over 4 million baht a year, contribute to several chairites. But every year it becomes more and more difficult to operate here due to the constant complaints of our clients due to the scams, police extortion, rude taxi drivers, the threat of being murdered or maimed, harrasment during shopping and nightlife, the list goes on. Many of my clients are young, spend alot of money here and like to go to the clubs. I don't have a problem with Immigration police doing their job but we have a drug task force here that obviously isnt doing a good job because the yaba problem gets worse every year. The reason for that is because many of the dealers on Soi 3 are "protected" by the police so they can get tea money from them. If Thailand was really serious about fighting the drug problem then they need to target the Thai's who supply and distribute the drugs to the foreigners and do a better job of treatment for drug abuse here. It's a supply and demand problem that has caused more and more foreigners to smuggle ice and other drugs to meet the demand. If a client from the USA for instance comes here that is prescribed medical marijuana by a DOCTOR, then he shouldnt be scrutinized by a random drug test while on vacation here. In Viet Nam we have never been subjected to this type of harrassment by the police towards our clients. I have been living there for 7 years and never see the scams and threat of getting robbed or murdered like we see here in Thailand. Vietnamese people are very kind, caring, and always interested in meeting new people often making sure your having a good time without harm. More and more of our clients are booking tours there and alot are refusing to come back to Thailand due to the threat of coups, police harrasment, scams, ect. And frankly we don't blame them. The politics and corruption make it harder for foreign investment here and that is why we have had enough. We are basing our tours out of DaNang now and will pull out of the Thai market soon. We love Thailand and it's people and stay here to take care of my wifes parents only but the quality of life and "Cultural Values" are a joke here. And Paradise? Not in Phuket or Pattaya anymore. I feel safer in Viet Nam and never feel like I'm living in a communist state there. I have never seen police come into a club there or on the streets and administer a drug test. And BTW, I have seen police escort foreigners out of clubs and administer drug tests to Thai's only so I suspect the Immigration police only ran this sting to those who were refusing to pay tea money to the local police or newbies trying to step on those that do. If you have been in Thailand long enough you know how things work. Trust me, my neighbor is a high ranking policeman and jokes about police corruption so we are in tune what occurs here. If I didnt keep his card in my wallet I'd be paying out tea money almost everyday at police checkpoints and nightlife hotspots simply because I drive a nice car. But keep in mind a lot has changed in 12 years.

Embassies from countries that used to claim the moral high ground now have to deal with the reality that their own countries are virtually strip searching people at airports. Sadly, the kneejerk reactions to 9/11 have resulted in the erosion of personal privacy and freedoms we used to take for granted. Add that to the random searches of persons and vehicles justified by the (doomed to fail) War on Drugs, it's definitely not the same world I grew up in.

And that's definitely not specific to Soi 3 or Thailand....

Methamphetamine, THC, Opioids, Benzodiazepines, ? ? ? (Did I miss any?)

Presumably alcohol is legal, so that wouldn't matter.

Also, what will happen to those people?

I read on another forum that male impotence drugs like viagra (kamagra), etc., are actually illegal in Thailand even though you can buy them on the street and even at certain pharmacies in the lower Sukhumvit area.

Could this be one of the reasons for the 50% positive test rate?

Probably not, but it's possible that it could be a high contributor in the area of Sukhumvit where this check was done. Also, I've known several 30 and 40 something year old guys who use the stuff because they say it enhances their experience (I guess they can get more for their money in an hour or two short time encounter) even though they did not normally need the drug(s) for any dysfunction.

I was on Khoa San road one night and saw a troop of coppers in riot gear head into the Lava club, there must have been 30 of 'em with clubs and helmets on, etc...... 5 minutes later all farangs came out, and I pulled over one Dutch guy who looked like he just escaped the electric chair. have you never seen police coming to the disco, blocking the entrances and making checks in your home country? many years ago they didnt do tests, that wasnt available, but they were looking at people (eyes), smelling for hashish, searching pockets and checking at id-cards... happened fairly often, already some decades ago in europe...

its not just about bringing drugs to a country, its also about the state of being drugged, which is unlawful...

it was in a crowded train and the guy tested looked clearly drugged in some way...

out of curiosity i asked, if it wasnt the persons private life whether they smoke marijuana in amsterdam or not, they said "no", asked for my id and drug-tested me too...
