Brazil overpower Thailand in Grand Prix finals

Nootsara Tomkom, Pleumjit Thinkaow and Malika Kanthong block a shot yesterday.

Olympic champions Brazil beat Thailand in straight sets in the women's volleyball World Grand Prix Finals yesterday.

Despite a solid resistance from Thailand, the Brazilians were irresistible at the net to score a 25-20 25-23 and 25-14 victory.

Captain Castro Sheilla scored 15 points for Brazil and Fernanda Rodgrigues added 11. Thailand also had two players in double digits with Malika Kanthong (13) and Wilavan Apinyapong (12) keeping them afloat.

The Thai women, who defeated hosts Chin 3-2 on Friday, started strongly against the Beijing Olympic Games gold medallist, racing to an 8-4 lead in the opening set. Brazil managed to tie the game at 9 but Thailand again went ahead to lead the first 16-12.

But Brazil then had a 6-1 run to take the lead for the first time at 18-17, claiming the first set at 25-20 with a kill from Paula Pequeno in a counter-attack.

Brazil showed their trademark offence with Adenizia Silva hitting the ball with great efficiency. The Thais answered with their typical fast attack and Malika came out with a powerful kill to help her team pull level at 14.

Tied at 22-22, a serving error from Thailand and Silva's kill gave Brazil two set points, Pleumjit Thinkaow saved one for Thailand with an excellent spike, but Brazil held the second as Menezes Thaisa's high spike proved too much for the Thailand defence.

Brazil came back in the third set with improved blocking against Pleumjit and Onuma Sittirak to lead at 13-9. Thailand managed to stay in the game, but with Rodgrigues and Silva firing on all cylinders, Brazil kept the advantage at the net and lead 20-13.

Brazil ran off five of the last six points, Danielle Lins and Jaqueline Carvalho combined to have a successful block and Brazil take the set at 25-14.

Thailand captain Wilavan said, "We tried our best. It is a very hard to play Brazil. They are a great team. It's not easy to score points."

Thailand coach Kiattipong Radchatagriengkai said Brazil played at a different level. "We are happy despite the defeat. We learned a lot of things from good players and good coaches. Every time we play, we try to improve our technique. It will be good for our future."

Brazil coach Jose R Guimaraes said he was very happy to see the improvement Thailand made over the years. "I watched their match against China yesterday. They were very good. Today, they put us under tremendous pressure. In the second set, the Thais served very hard, we made many mistakes in reception. I am happy with the three points," he said.

In another match, the United States beat Cuba 25-14, 26-24 and 25-14 to stay unbeaten in the tournament so far. The straight set victory was their fourth.

Thais gun down China

On Friday, Thailand stunned China with an epic come-from-behind 21-25 25-22 34-32 21-25 15-13 victory. The magnificent win was a sweet revenge for the Thais, who lost 3-1 to them in Macau early this month. After the victory, fans took to the social media to praise the Thai team's exceptional performance.

Today, Thailand take on Cuba, Turkey play Brazil and China challenge the US.

Meanwhile, Thai coach Kiattipong said Japanese professional J-League sides are interested in signing Onuma Sittirak and Pleumjit Thinkaow for the next season.

Chamni

Songkhla: -- Veteran photographer Chamni Thipmanee's solo photo exhibition, "Two Decades of Chamni Thipmanee", opens today at a.e.y Space gallery in his hometown of Songkhla.

It is the first time the photographer has brought his work to his home province after staging solo and collective works in Bangkok and abroad.

The exhibition will showcase 100 photographs - many in the street photography style - taken in Songkhla over the past 20 years. The oldest photo is a nude portrait taken 20 years ago.

"Every time I go home, there's always something attracting me. Songkhla is crying for attention from my camera," he says.

He often roams the streets with his camera and loves doing portraits and candid shots that capture special moments reflecting social issues.

His photos tell the story of the province's cultural diversity, as well as locals' ways of life. Among them are photos of vendors selling Songkhla street foods, Thai temples and the Chinese community.

Chamni is also delighted to see his works displayed in the newly opened a.e.y Space on Nang-ngam Road, housed in a Chinese shophouse built in 1933. In the 1940s, it housed a famous Chinese restaurant and teahouse. Chamni is the second artist to stage an the exhibition in the gallery, after Nopadon Kaosam-ang.

Interested in photography since he was a young boy, Chamni attended the Institute de Europe in Rome in 1982, from where he went on to explore and experience Europe, where he fell deeply in love with photography.

He returned to Thailand and worked as a freelance photographer before co-founding the leading still-photography studio Chamni's Eye Co in 1992.

The exhibition will run until August 31. The gallery is open Thursday through Sunday, from 2pm to 8pm.

Domestic politics mars bilateral ties with the US

The Nation July 1, 2012 1:00 am

BANGKOK: -- If Nasa project had been put to Parliament it may have been OK

Some have said that it's easier for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa) to go to the moon than Thailand. The issue is how to prevent the sarcasm from becoming well-established reality. Nasa has packed its bag, after a request to use U-tapao airbase for a weather study project triggered a political storm in Thailand. It was a decision greeted differently by people in the divided kingdom. Domestic politics played a big role in the controversy from start to finish, and even the question whether that is good or bad for Thailand will be answered along ideological lines.

Zoo animals 'predict' Spain will win

The Nation on Sunday

BANGKOK: -- With the Euro 2012 final due to early tomorrow (at 1.45am), Thais purchased over 160 million postcards to guess which team - Spain or Italy - will win. Zoo animals, meanwhile, were said to have favoured Spain.

Confronted with two footballs, one with a Spanish flag and the other with an Italian flag, Chiang Mai Zoo's panda cub Lin Ping at first reached out and touched the Italian ball before shifting to grab the Spanish ball and play with it. Its mother Lin Hui, confronted with the same choice, went straight to play with the Spanish ball.

At Chon Buri's Khao Khiew Zoo, the male macaw "JR" signalled that the Spanish team would win. The bird is said to have "picked" the winner of the World Cup 2010 before.

Emotional quotient of Thai kids has fallen for a decade: survey

The Nation on Sunday July 1, 2012 1:00 am

BANGKOK: -- Thai children's emotional quotient (EQ) scores have dropped from 186.42 in 2002 and 179.58 in 2007 to 169.72 in 2011, a survey by the Public Health Ministry's Mental Health Department revealed.

EQ is a measure of the ability to identify, assess and control one's emotions, those of others and of groups.

"They are less happy. They see more competition," Rajanukul Institute director Panpimol Wipulakorn said. The survey cov?ered 5,325 children, aged between six and 11, in Bangkok, Pathum Thani, Rayong, Samut Sakhon, Uttaradit, Nakhon Sawan, Nakhon Ratchasima, Roi Et, Krabi and Pattani.

According to Panpimol, raw scores from the 2011 survey revealed that Thai children's EQ scores were lower than normal. The normal range of raw scores lies between 50 and 100, but Thai children's EQ scores averaged at just 45.12.

On adjustment to problems, the average score stood at 46.65. On emotional control, the average scores were 46.50; on morals and self-sat?isfaction, the average was 45.65. On being considerate and understand other people's feelings, the children scored 45.65 on average and on emo?tional adjustment, they earned 45.23.

Panpimol said if categorised by region, children in the South had the highest EQ scores (45.95), while those in the North averaged at 45.84. In Bangkok, children's average EQ scores were 45.62. In the Central region, the average score was 44.38, while in the Northeast they scored just 44.04.

Asked why children in the Northeast scored so low, Panpimol said relevant factors had not been studied yet.

"But I believe it might have to do with the fact that many children in the Northeast are not living with their parents, who have migrated to work in big cities. They might be living with their grandparents but some elderly people have economic and health problems, which can affect their upbringing," she said.

Rajanagarindra Child and Adolescent Mental Health Institute director Dr Taweesilp Visanuyothin said it was bad that Thai children's EQ scores have been falling. "But the quotient can improve if they get proper care from families, schools and society," he said.

Juvenile center for Muslim youth in Yala lacks budget for construction

BANGKOK, 1 July 2012 (NNT) – The Department of Juvenile Observation and Protection has proposed an idea to build a juvenile center for Muslim children and adolescents in the southern border province of Yala. 270 million baht is needed for the construction.

Director-General of the Department of Juvenile Observation and Protection Thawatchai Thaikhiew said children and adolescents in the department’s juvenile centers nationwide were well taken care of, especially those in the provinces with a lot of Muslims. Handbooks on how to treat young Muslim people in accordance with Islamic laws were distributed to the centers’ staff for proper treatments, Mr.Thawatchai said.

During the Islamic fast period, Muslim children and adolescents at the juvenile centers will be allowed to travel to nearby mosques and those who are eligible for home visit will be allowed to return to their homes for religious activities for one month.

The director-general said the department had set plans to construct the juvenile training center for young Muslims in Yala province but still lacked budget. The department’s center which clearly separates Muslim youth from youth of other faiths is located in Songkhla province. This center is the main juvenile center of the lower South with diets and activities specifically designed for Muslims adolescents.
