I noticed that there is a train from BKK to Butterworth in Malaysia, however on the timetable there is another destination written in Thai after Butterworth, does anyone know what it is?

Also im guessing the train makes a stop at the border, how is this done, do u leave the train and get picked up on the other side?

Cheers guys

There is a platform between countries where train stops and your process through both immigration offices and reboard. Butterworth is the end of the line so not sure what in on your timetable. It is a train station and connects to bus and ferry crossing (to Penang Island - Georgetown).

The Malaysian border is at Pedang Besar. You get off the train with your luggage; exit Thai immigration and proceed to Malaysian immigration and customs (all in the same building) then get back on the same train. The train gets a Malaysian engine and Malaysian crew and then proceeds to Butterworth. There are trains to KL in the evening and if the train from Bangkok is on time you have enough time to pay a quick visit to Penang (much better than Butterworth which is a dump!) but be sure to buy your ticket to KL first and note Malaysian time! They have first class sleepers to KL.

Yes

I can't recall what time it leaves its late pm and arrives at about 6am in KL and you can buy tickets at the ticket office you will pass a few mins after you arrive of the ferry in Penang.

would like add that trains are always late (up to 5hrs) and many times passengers are ferried from Pedang Besar to Butterworth by coach bus.

within butterworth compound, you can travel to KL either by train or coach.

Hi,

Just for your info, if you really need to go to KL you can find really cheap flight ticket on AirAsia, I went there few weeks ago and paid smtg like 4000 THB for the return trip, nearly the same price as the bus :)

buses to KUL leave from BTW-right beside trains-ev 30 mins or so-quite fast via Tollway-touts will approach you when train finally gets there.

SRT does not sell tickets for KTMB=malay trains, but its easy to book online on that-again see seat61.com

only 2 cars (only AC 2nd cl sleeper) are detached from the long train at HYai from BKK and carry onward-NO 1st, no nonAC.

It is cheaper and often quicker to take any train into HYai and then find a seat in van or bus onward-again touts aplenty to direct you-those in the know you can bargain with them.
