Asean and new markets to cushion impact of slump in exports to euro zone, says Kittiratt

The Nation on Sunday

BANGKOK: -- Electronics, jewellery, and garments are among the major Thai export industries currently hit by the euro-zone crisis, but the growing Asean and other new markets would help cushion the negative impact, according to deputy premier and Finance Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong.

He said the euro-zone situation had stabilised as key players were taking action to solve the problems.

Besides the export sectors, the country's tourism industry has also been hit by the euro-zone crisis with tourist arrivals down 6-7 per cent in the past months when compared with the same period last year.

Tourism and Sports Minister Chumpol Silapa-archa, said tourist arrivals for the whole year should still meet the target of 20 million as there will be more visitors from Asia, especially China, Japan and Korea.

Suraphol Sawet-senee, governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, said the agency's target is to boost annual tourism revenue to Bt2 trillion in 2015, nearly doubling from Bt1.1 trillion recorded last year.

He said Russia, China, Korea and Australia are priority markets for Thailand as they still enjoy strong economic growth rates.

In addition, TAT has focussed on special interest groups such as golf tourism, spa tourism, honeymoon tourism and shopping tourism.

He said the agency would also implement measures to attract higher-income tourists, especially those in the middle and high-income groups. For example, the ratio of high-income visitors will be raised to 25 per cent of the total, up from the present 18 per cent in the next 2-3 years.

Prison drug probe widens

The Nation on Sunday

Nakhon Si Thammarat police yesterday extended their behind-bars drug-dealing investigation to a house in Lan Saka district, where they seized 7,000 yaba tablets and 50 grams of crystal meth.

After learning that the drug ring involving Nakhon Si Thammarat Prison inmates had sent a large quantity of drugs to be stored at a Tambon Lan Saka house pending distribution, police yesterday morning searched the house. Theerasak Olanchon, 25, and his wife Siranee Kanthanukul, 23, presented themselves as owners of the home, where drugs worth about Bt300,000 were found. Both face a charge of possessing drugs with intent to sell.

Lan Saka investigator Pol Lt-Colonel Kasidit Chankan said police were hunting for war weapons and drug fugitive Wutthikrai Sri-ura when they received information that Wutthikrai stored drugs at the home of his close aide Theerasak, which led to the issuing of a search warrant.

Lamphun MP Sataporn passes away

The Nation July 15, 2012 1:00 am

Sataporn Maneerat, a four-time member of Parliament from Lamphun - most recently with the Pheu Thai Party - died of cancer and kidney disease yesterday.

After months of treatment, Sataporn passed away at Maharaj Nakorn Hospital in Chiang Mai at 1pm. The bathing ceremony will be held today at San Sai Temple in Lamphun at 3pm.

Sataporn, who was also a provincial red-shirt leader, was a Thai Rak Thai party-list MP before switching to run as a constituency candidate, winning an MP seat in 2005, holding the seat from Lamphun until his death. When he reported as an MP-elect last year, he carried fresh fruit and vegetables such as longan and garlic as a gimmick to urge the new government to boost prices of agricultural goods.

Two hurt in series of blasts in Yala

NAKARIN CHINWORAKOMOL,

PARES LOHASAN

THE NATION ON SUNDAY

30186183-01_big.jpg

YALA: -- Four bomb attacks on bank ATMs and an M79 grenade attack on a Ranger base in Bannang Sata district in Yala on Friday night left two people injured. It also prompted a security beef-up in the three southern border provinces.

Bannang Sata superintendent Pol Colonel Charoen Thammakhan said police checked the four banks' security cameras and one of them - at a Government Savings Bank branch - captured a group of four or five youths on motorcycles in front of the bank minutes before the blast. An inspection of the scene turned up SIM cards apparently used to detonate the device, Charoen said.

It was suspected that the five attacks were carried out by a group led by Mukta Alimama, who is believed to have replaced Ma-ae Apibalbae as the region's leading insurgent. The latter died during a gunfight with officials in Yala's Than Tho district last year.

Ahead of the Islamic fasting month, Pattani's Muang district municipality has beefed up security and implemented strict checks on suspicious vehicles. The move follows an intelligence report that a group of five or six suspected insurgents recently held a meeting in Nong Chik district's Tambon Tuyong and another in Muang district's Tambon Pakaharang to discuss attacks using guns and bombs.

Kanchanaburi schools receive medicine chest, sports equipment donations

KANCHANABURI, 15 July 2012 (NNT) – The Governor of Kanchanaburi, Mr. Chaiwat Limwanta, presided over a ceremony to present medicine chests and sports equipment to needy schools in 13 districts of Kanchanaburi province.

The donations, made by the British Dispensary (LP) Company Limited, were presented to representatives of the recipient schools at Wat Intaram School in Tha Muang District. The presentation was witnessed by chiefs of government units in Kanchanaburi, and teachers and students from the benefited schools. On behalf of the donor, Mr. Anurut Vongvanij, president of the British Dispensary company gave background information on the donations, which were parts of the company's “Medicine Chests for the Young” campaign.

Governor Chaiwat expressed thanks to the British Dispensary company for giving the importance to schoolchildren’s health and hygiene. At the ceremony, the company donated medicine chests and sports equipment to sixty schools. At present, many schools in Kanchanaburi still lack medications for common illnesses and require supplies to administer first aid. This campaign is thus very beneficial for rural Thai children, in promoting good health and quality of life.
