My DTAC data subscription always expires as I forget to top up early enough, can not help with that.

I have found following an good enough solution for Thai SMSes. If you are using Android phone and gmail, you can download SMS backup application, which can forward your SMS's to your gmail.. and then use the gmail translate service to translate the texts from Thai to English (or another language).

There is also some applications which translate the messages automatically, but personally I did not find any good one.

your provider will send you SMS in english if you set it up that way.

I have had my DTAC for 3 years now. Every now and then I have asked from a various DTAC shops and also the call center to change all my messages to English. Well, now I don't get too much spam messages, but about 50% of the messages I get from DTAC are in Thai.

I told my self to give up and adapt.

Like this (also with gmail/google translation as an example):

ไม่สามารถต่อ Happy internetไม่จำกัด399บ. ยอดเงินคงเหลือไม่เพียงพอ

Happy internet use is not limited to 399 baht / month Call Czech * 101 * 4 #.

แฮปปี้ต่อโปร "โทรเบอร์ดีแทคนาทีละ50สต.เบอร์อื่นๆนาทีละ1.25บ.,Net1.07บ.คิดเป็นนาที"ใช้ได้ถึง31ธค.55

Happy the Home "phone number for 50 minutes Storm Press. Number of other B 1.25 per minute, Net1.07 us a minute," available Dec. 31 to 0.55.

It took me quite awhile to figure out what was going on visa vis the 70 hour package and automatic renewal. Here's the deal, and it kind of sucks. The 70 hour package costs 199 baht plus tax (about 214 baht) and gives you 70 hours of Internet useage for one month. After the 70 hours is exhausted, Internet use costs one baht/mintue (expensve!). If you have it set up for automatic renewal, it will automatically renew upon expiration at the end of the month, provided you have sufficient funds in your account (about 214 baht).

Here's the rub and what kept happening to me. I figured my account was ready for automatic renewal EITHER at the end of the month OR when the 70 hours exhausted. But it ONLY renews at the end of the month. So every time I exhausted my 70 hours early, DTAC began sucking the money out of my accout at 1 baht/minute, no auto-renewal, soon sucking it dry. Boy was I pissed. I called and got credits from them several times, but it was like pulling teeth. Now I closely moniter the Internet useage hours balance left in my account and then call to renew the 70 hour package before it runs completely dry.

This is a pain in the ass, but you can bet that DTAC makes a mint on the people that inadvertantly let their accounts run out and begin paying at 1 baht/minute. I have been very happy with DTAC service except for this little piece of sneaky bullshit.

I think if the msg is DTAC generated (like relating to your account, DTAC promotions, etc) it will come in either English or Thai as you have setup on your account. However, if the msg is not DTAC generated it will show up in whatever language that person/company transmits the msg in....and with this being Thailand it will probably be in Thai. But with this being said I have no doubt DTAC sends some of its generated msgs in Thai only...maybe they feel spending a few extra minutes to develop an English version is too much trouble/not worth it.

Yes, when I read the terms and conditions for the time-based, pre-paid Happy Internet packages this is exactly how they say it works, so perhaps not sneaky per se? Also note that, as with voice calling, any fraction of a minute is rounded up.

That said, 70 hours at 384 Kbps (assuming you have a 850 MHz 3G capable device and coverage) is pretty decent for 214 baht. You can manage your account, including checking your usage, pretty easily with Happy eServices.
