Hi, yes u can go upriver and down.....so I believe.

I checked out the river travel a couple of years ago at Chen Sean, Thai immigration

said no problem and you can get a China visa in Chiang Mai.

Go and talk to the boat captains when they dock or just stroll up and down the river

and look for the boat of your choice.

I was quoted around 2000 bht for a one way to Jinhong about 3 nights and 2 days.

Check out the boats carefully you might end up on a chinese gamboling boat.
