A friend of mine who lives in the boonies near me uses an AIS supplied dongle for his Internet connection. Up until a few days ago it used only EDGE. Yesterday he asked me why he had a new icon on his taskbar. He said it was a little green circle with a 3G in the center. He didn't know what 3G was. I told him that 3G would be much faster and his next question was how to use it. I couldn't tell him.

What does he have to do to connect via 3G? Will his present SIM card work?

All he really needs to do is subscribe to data plan, if he hasn't done so already.

Does he already have a data plan? If so which one?

One-2-Call's time-based plans are capped at 384 Kbps, while volume-based plans are un-capped until the fair-use limit is reached, then speed is reduced to 384 Kbps.

Not sure what his requirements/budget are?

He uses the pre-paid 200 baht per month for 50 hours. Quite frankly, that's all he can afford.

What's the difference between a GSM customer and a 12call customer? The GSM customer gets 300MB for 150 baht and the 12call only 150MB for 150 baht.

One-2-Call is the pre-paid brand of AIS.

GSM Advance is the post-paid brand of AIS.

Thanks, I suspected that but didn't think there would be that much difference.

I have been using the AIS dongle for years. when i signed up, i was on the unlimited edge/gprs plan. when 3G came along it was automatically added to my package, so you don't have to do anything to get it, but i only get maximum 2gb of 3G using a month. if you download a lot of video, you use it up very quickly. even if you change to their best plan, you only get 5gb.
