German found dead

The Nation on Sunday July 22, 2012 1:00 am

BANGKOK: -- A 47-year-old German man was found dead in a graveyard in Bangkok early yesterday morning.

Police said he fell from a high building near the graveyard, which is in the Silom area of Bangkok.

His Thai friend, Thongban Santhat, 32, who travelled from Phuket to search for him in Bangkok believed he had jumped to his death because the German had called him on Friday and told him to pick up his body.

So he rushed to Bangkok and told Jor Sor 100 traffic radio officers to help him. Later they told him to identify the body and it was that of his German friend.

Thongban said Hammer suffered from brain tumour and it might have caused him to end his life.

Lokrai Wannasukoprasit, 18, the graveyard caretaker, said many people had been found falling from high buildings into the graveyard in the past.

Police believed he fell from the ninth floor of a hotel, which has a swimming pool. They are checking the hotel's closed-circuit cameras to find out the cause of his death.

"Police said he fell from a high building near the graveyard"

What? Were there high winds when he fell? With an intro like this, how can anyone believe anything.

RIP to the poor ould soul.

It is indeed a sad story, but...

... why do I, when reading the article, get this insane feeling of reading a script for an episode of Monty Python's Flying Circus? I mean, just the phrase "... many people had been found falling from high buildings into the graveyard in the past."

When reading something in English in a Thai newspaper it's likely that the correspondent is not a native speaker of English, and the same for the editor. "Near" was meant to mean "adjoining" or "adjacent" or something similar, no doubt. Keeping in mind the writer's proficiency in English would serve us well when reading about other mysterious deaths, road fatalities, and the like.

...hopefully, 'believed to have a brain tumor' can be substantiated in some way...

(otherwise, anyone can say anything to explain away someone's death.....)

That the ninth floor has a pool which is accessible for almost everyone and the most likely spot he jumped from.

Makes perfect sense to people with an IQ over 70. How many hotels are located IN a graveyard? Pretty obvious the hotel was NEXT TO aka NEAR a graveyard.

My condolences to his friends and family always sad to read about an incident like this in Thailand or any ware else in the world for that matter, I suppose having a brain tumour would not have helped his state of mind at the time. R.I.P

Quite a few hotels are located in the old chinese grave yard located on the corner of Silom and Chong Nong Sri. For instance there is a new hotel being erected in the graveyard next to the BTS Chong Nong Sri. However they did move the bodies first. When it was an occupied grave yard there was a hotel nearby including the Sathorn Inn. Another part of the grave yard which borders on Silom road has been built on by the Niagara Hotel parts of the grave yard are still around the hotel. There is even a Tour Company "Wandee Tours" should any of those still in residence wish to take a break from their eternal rest. It is quite possible he fell into the grave yard from one of the Hotels built in the old grave yard which covered an area of around 1km x 1km.

"next to" is not the same as "near", so it's your IQ that is questionable. "near" could mean a block away, hence cup-O-coffee's comment. As someone else said, these reports are written by people who are not wholly proficient in English, so their choice of words is often wrong. We ought to accommodate that, but it often prompts jokes.

Actually, now it's even sadder.

If I am reading this right he called Thongban Santhat on Friday told him he was going to top himself and jumped the next day.

Thongban Santhat took the call so seriously he rushes all the way to Bangkok then goes to a Traffic Radio Station for help?

Long way round for a short cut if you ask me.

it does not say he went to the radio station, it says he spoke with them, possibly by phone on his way up from Phuket, ask them to go and help him until he arrives

Condolences for sure.

Anyone who has ever gone so close to taking their own life knows the repugnance of some of the frivilous disrepctful comments so far.
