[Myanmar] Thousands Flee Ethnic Violence In Assam

Thousands have fled their homes in India’s northeastern Assam State after sectarian fighting killed at least 19 people and left countless villages burnt to the ground, police said on Monday. Warning shots were being fired to disperse armed groups that were moving between jungle hamlets, setting bamboo houses ablaze as they went, reported Reuters news agency. Ringed by China, Burma, Bangladesh and Bhutan, India’s northeast is home to more than 200 ethnic, religious and tribal groups and has been subject to revolts since India’s independence from Britain in 1947.
