Pheu Thai Mp Karun Denies Being Unusually Rich

Now all he has to do is explain how he acquired 3 million US$ worth of amulets on a comparatively meagre MP's salary and where that money came from.

BTW: I can't help it, but in the OP photo he looks like he's about to punch someone in the nose...

I always smile when some MP or top police officer is deemed "unusually" rich

It should read " par for the course for those bent buggers" rich.

I reckon an MP or police general who isn't unusually rich isn't really trying hard enough and should be removed from the position. Let someone with a complete lack of morals have a chance.

MP Karun denies 'unusual' increase in wealth

Praphan Jindalertudomdee

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Pheu Thai MP Karun Hosakul denied yesterday that he had unusually amassed wealth by some Bt108 million, as stated in his assets declaration to the National Anti-Corruption Commission.

In his report to the NACC a year after the dissolution of Parliament, Karun's wealth increased by Bt108 million, after deduction of debts.

Karun said yesterday he had not amassed any wealth but simply reported the value of amulets, which had a combined value of Bt90.5 million. The MP said that in his previous assets statements, he had not reported the value of the amulets.

NACC member Medhi Krongkaew said the NACC's assets examination team was looking into the issue. Medhi insisted the NACC has the mandate to investigate the issue even without any complaints.

Based on checks by Isra News Agency, Karun's additional assets from 2011 to 2012 included 70 Buddhist amulets valued at Bt90.5 million. Two residential properties also appreciated by about Bt5.1 million. The valuation of a home in Don Muang increased from Bt10 million to Bt15 million and another home in Pathum Thani saw a slight increase in value from Bt400,000 to Bt500,000.

In one year, his land holdings rose from 12 plots valued at Bt22 million to 20 worth Bt33 million.

On assuming office, his valued assets included four pistols, an amulet in a gold case worth Bt1 million, diamond jewellery worth Bt1.5 million and four wristwatches worth Bt2 million. A year later, he still had four pistols but the value of his diamond jewellery had doubled (Bt3 million) and he had eight watches worth Bt5 million.

He also reported owning 9,994 shares worth Bt999,400 in K Zone Co, operator of a health club.

When he served as MP, his earning commission amounted to Bt200,000 per year from a wet market business, while his wife Pimpicha earned Bt429,000.

Meanwhile, there are rumours that Pheu Thai will pick Jatuporn Phromphan to run in Don Muang instead of Karun, who won constituency 12 seat by just 7,000 votes.

Can Jatuporn contest the Don Muang ward if he didn't vote in the last election?

This would just be another case of PTP flipping the bird in the face of law and order.

Not as far as I'm aware. But rules and law dont seem to bother PTP that much. That will be clause 408769680 in the new constitution

How about being unusually annoying? Does he deny that too?

Karun, along with Jatuporn and others, are among a small group of people I would like to put in "I hate England" t-shirts and deposit them in a Milwall pub after a home loss to Chelsea.

Come in all shapes and sizes up to and exceeding a tobacco tin, Buddhism related, and the most expensive ones are reputed to magic powers giving the owner/wearer protection from death by certain causes such as gunshot or vehicle accident.

He says he has amulets worth a fortune, but I wouldn't try to use them as collateral on a loan.

Really, a consignment of geriatric shoemakers. Round objects. (Yes, PM)

Owning 2 million quids worth of amulets would meet my definition of "unusually rich".

Is there any other country known where you most probably get away with such a stupid explanation?

In other countries you wouldn't have to make similar declarations at all.

I know many people who collect amulets, even many monks. However, I don't know anyone who has even 1 million baht worth let alone 90 million.

It's all subjective prices.. kind of like barbie dolls or tickle me elmo's. The prices of these amulets are not like stamps or old baseball cards, which are pretty well set in stone. Anyone can say, "hey, I have an amulet that's worth 2 million baht". But trying to get 2 million baht for it ain't so easy.

There's some Luang Por Toh and Luang Por Parn amulets out there, the highest price amulets I know about, that will fetch approx. 100,000 baht. Even some old Jatukorm amulets. But most of the amulets are really up to how much someone will pay for them. This guy is full of crap. whistling.gif

As regards to the value of amulets, perhaps he has some similar to these.

A beautiful piece in perfect condition could easily be worth more than USD 1 million.

http://ahaina.wordpress.com/category/the-grand-5-sacred-buddha-amulets/

when one considers the age of some of these very expensive ones, it's less surprising

The oldest Phra Rod amulets could be dated to be approximately over 1000 years old.

or

Wat Maha That in Suphan Buri province and are estimated to have a history of about 500 - 600 years.

When's the by-election for his MP district in Bangkok after he gets tossed out on his ear just like Thaksin's niece did for also lying on her asset declaration statement???

The beauty of these lying and making false asset declaration statements is that they are usually so cut and dry without a lot of wiggle room.

They either did or they did not include all their assets. In this case, it's pretty clear.

Karun said that he did not report the value of the amulets in his previous assets statements.

It'll soon be time for the parties to announce their candidates to take Kung <deleted> Kicking Karun's MP seat.
